No need to pump the gear box oil through the drain bung guys. There's a black cover at the top of the gear box, at the back. Take our the 4 torque bolts and funnel 1.7L of oil through there. Also, undernear the ecu for the mechatronic unit (black ecu held in by 7 25mm torque bolts) there should be a small circular seal in the centre of the unit. If that isnt there then your unit won't hold pressure and you'll never pass the adaptions. Check the bearings in the gearbox while that unit is out also. You'll see 4 of them. Top left and right and then bottom left and right. Make sure they move all the way left, to the centre and all the way right. When the unit goes back in make sure they're all in the neutral position (centre). Just some advice from someone who's been through hell and back for a few years lol
There is nothing that phases Chris at all , so keen to get stuck in . Can just imagine Chris as a kid , Meccano set still in the box …. Parents come downstairs in morning and Chris has upgraded the washing machine to a washer dryer overnight 🤣🤣
Chris said he'd never done one before but stripped it with ease, hes not just a master mechanic hes a proper engineer, & using the cardboard to map out where the bolts go 💡
Always a joy to see Chris work close up old school methodology lay, it out as you dismantle the unit when reassemble just work backwards love the clean and tidy work bench no muck and to get in when putting back together. Robs commentary clear and honest with the viewers especially when it doesn't go to plan helps us look out for the pitfalls. Top content 👌
You guys have the biggest balls. Taking on something you have never tackled before, and first time dismantling a dead unit. Can’t wait for the numbers. And part 2. 😎😎😎
What an excellent video guys - absolutely fantastic. My old dad (RIP) use to say to me “it’s only nuts and bolts, son, somebody put it together so we must be able to get it apart and repair it” ……..Chris is a true legend, we all need a Chris in our lives!! Brilliant vid can’t wait for the next instalment.
I like Chris' trick with the cardboard to know which bolt came from which hole. Maybe a lot of people already know that but I didn't and I'll borrow that for the future.
First comment and and been following you guys for a while……. It’s pretty simple fix,The accumulator has gone in the mech, it’s more than likely fractured the mechatronic housing/body. Just beware of hairline cracks in the mechatronic body even if you can’t see them as it’s very common. Any DSG “specialist” will charge £1300 quid easily and probably attempt to do you over for a new clutch as well as I’ve seen it so many times over the years and when in reality this can be fixed for less than £150 quid with the mechatronic still on the car. Bare in mind the DQ200 box takes two separate oils: 1 litre of hydraulic oil - G 004 000 1.7 litre of gearbox oil - G 052 171 Whilst you have the mechatronic out you would be as well having a quick look over the solenoids as that’s the only other real issue with these.
In the last 15 years or so, VW/Audi have become masters at disguising shoddy, substandard engineering behind expensive looking interiors and nice wheels. Most of their stuff is the epitome of style over substance and has been for years.
I actually drove from Essex to Leicester and back this morning,,,and the only thing that keeps me sane is the fact that when I get home I can sit and watch these two ,,,absolutely love them ❤
Brilliant video. I actually have a dsg Golf R and the one thing that absolutely terrifies me is gearbox problems and yet there Chris is, having never done one before, just getting stuck in 👏
Massive respect Chris, never done anything like it before and gets stuck right in, I need to get a set of jump leads from Chris to me and try and tap into his knowledge 😇
Please can you think about getting Chris miked up. He's got such a lot of knowledge to pass on but sometimes I struggle to hear him. Great video guys. It looks like the gamble is going to pay off, although we've not heard the money bit yet but I bet it's nowhere near £4000
I had a Mk5 Golf R32 that had issues with the Mechatronic unit. I took it to a VW dealer and because it was a known issue and the dealer principal loved the R32 I had it done for about £700 and VW covered the rest. Brilliant channel, Thanks for all your hard work. 👍🏼
Dean at saving salvage has experience with mechatronics replacements. Could be a good source of knowledge with the ins & outs of these transmissions. Fantastic content guys.
Love that you guys don’t shy away from any challenge. Looks to be a very straight car, will have my eye on this one when it’s up for sale. I watch every video but loosing track of all the projects and where they are at. Might need another update video soon.
Are you sure Chris doesn’t moonlight as a neurosurgeon? That strip down was clinical. Absolutely outstanding! Kudos for the cardboard bolt template, they work every single time. Then you put the bloody thing back together without a Haynes book of lines. THEN the modest bugger says “no major dramas”. When the s**t hits the fan, he’s your man 😁Superb as usual.
Very interesting video. One of the main causes of failure is lack of servicing on dsg/S-tronic gearboxes. The 6spds are every 40k mile and the more robust 7spds are every 70k. But most vag dealers do not advise owners of this, just in the same way they never advised owners of the 6 and 8spd zf boxes. I had mk6 GTI dsg and had the box serviced as soon as I bought the car as vw has fixed price servicing for the dsg/S-tronic gearboxes. Keep on top of the servicing and they work fine. Very fast changing and these 2nd gen dsg boxes are a bit smoother at pulling away in low revs compared to the first gen in the mk5 golfs. Top work again Chris & Rob 👍
Rob ," Chris is gonna have a look at this in the evenings" Chris ' yeah I'm gonna have a look tonite " ,total dedication from the " brain" nice job fellas and are those McDonald's cups on the work bench full of the change Chris gets outta the vehicles ! 😂,Great vid as usual fellas 👍
Hi chris and rob amazing content is that a modified plate you put back in the mech unit as the aluminium is thicker round wear the accumulator screws to as that is the weakest parts of these mechatronic unit i would recommend using the correct bolts to fit the front cover on the mech unit but that my preference just a little help/advise if needed you need a OAM mechatronic removal tool can buy them off of ebay for about £12 you will need this refit the mech unit to the gearbox it holds the clutch forks away from the mech makes it easier to install you will also have to line all the selectors up on the back the mech unit use a Vernier Gauge And measure all 4 corners to 25 mm and in the gearbox you will have to make sure all the gear selectors are in neutral in the gearbox if these are not lined up properly it can get stuck in gear or not have certain gears when reprogramming or quick learn after installation also you dont need to pump the oil in through the drain plug i find it easier to pour in from the top just under the battery you will see the gear selector cable remove the 10mm bolt from selector and under that there is a black plastic cover remove the 4 30 torx bolt remove the cover and put a funnel in the gearbox and pour it in from the top less mess its the way i learned how to fi these mech units sorry this i lots to read but i just though i would share some of my experience with you guys hope this helps and makes sense
Great video as usual guys! I love these problem solving episodes where you guys just jump in with both feet and roll with whatever crops up. It’s great that you have so many great suppliers there that can get you the parts you need. Our choices over on this side of the pond are much more limited. Look forward to seeing how this one turns out! Cheers 🍻.
Great video again guys 110% better with both of you on together, I no you can't both be on video all the time because you both need to get stuff done.... But from a subscriber point of view these last few videos 📹 are the ones keep up the good work men 👏 👍🏻 👌🏻
A pair of First class teachers right there. You can learn more from you pair in 3 months what some kids would learn int 3 years at college. Top of the class.
Great to see Chris in his element and using his skills and knowledge to solve new problems, quite an education in itself. Great piece this evening, thanks.
Love the look of this competition edition but I know its not everyone's cup of tea,I'm sure you boys will get to the bottom of it,had to laugh at Rob telling Chris off doing a bit of work on the range rover cos he needs to film etc🤣🤣love the dynamics of you 2 but that's why most people probably watch the channel personally, cheers guys👍
I was going to say before but I forgot to mention. You 2 should invest in 2 LED rechargeable head torches. For years I used a light like yours broke me mad. I went camping and bought a head torch and mine is my best mate how. Where ever I go it goes honestly they make your life 💯 easier working on motors 😉😉
Hi Rob and Chris, what a smart looking car that Audi A1 is with the red body parts, the DSG looks very complicated to sort out but the results will be worth it.
Chris jumps in with the confidence that only a true expert has. Why are modern cars so effing complicated? Great vid, lads. Hope your run of luck continues.
Superb informative video again, just love the way you 2 just get stuck in and repair stuff. I built myself a massive solid timber workbench and it's full already, how do you keep your's tidy!!!
I can add another one to the needs a gearbox! Great to see that certain things on a car aren't terminal and sell for scrap as dealers make out. Cheers Guy's. Keep up the good work and let Chris get out on the mower to let off steam.
Just brilliant! Well done again. The only channel on the tube where I watch all the adverts.. Keep up the great videos. I'm sure your gonna get a Wheeler Dearlers type deal!!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Very interesting video guys. The part from that Audi you are rebuilding is an interesting piece and I'm sure it will work very well when its all back together. Thank you for the entertainment, much appreciated.
Hi rob & chris must be the best channel on RU-vid Chris is worth his weight in gold he can turn his hand to whatever you bring him rob roll on to Friday well done the two of you 👍
Hi from durham guys👋👍 and I hope chris appreciated driving around with rob as much as you appreciated catching that box out vito😂👌 never mind nice to see you working it was nice to see chris getting chauffeured 👍😂 and great watch on the mecatronics was brilliant watching chris working his magic👌 its mad how that computer runs a dual clutch as quick as they do tho👍 and the contacts list ever expanding👌 keep up guys and if need hand pushing rangey in giv is a shout 😂 thanks for your time and be safe see you soon guys👍👋
I have been following you for over two years. Always loved the channel, even when Chris was silent in the background. Now you are the best car RU-vidrs bar none with both of you explaining what you are doing. I have nothing at all to do with the car trade, but eagerly await Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to see what you are up to. 👍
i'm a mechanic, tried to catch that bloody lid, knocked the screen over... it takes a few psi to rupture that casing, wear/tear, or failed pressure circuit somewhere? very interesting vid, learning all the time.... keep up the excellent work chaps!
Rob Very interesting video never seen that you bought before we love this chanel because every week there is something new different stuff happening keep the good content coming guys Phil in stoke
Blimey Chris having a scrummage in the boot already!! Well done a lovely car when its fixed!! Chris sitting on the Landy, wonder what he was going to tell you Rob and realised you were filming... 🤣🤣
Hi Chris and Rob. Be careful when refitting and refilling the mechatronic it’s very sensitive apparatus. I did a world first and had a golf mk6 and did a manual to 7 speed swap DSG. This is the 0AM DQ200 gearbox. Make sure you fill exactly 0.9l of hydraulic fluid green into the mechatronic and through the fill hole not breather. When refitting ensure the gear selector actuator arms are in neutral. There are 4 in total. You will not be able to run adaptations if the gearbox is stuck in gear. I know these well. I’ll send you a link on my build to give you an idea.
Let me know on here if you would like me to reach out to help you at any stage. You require odis or vcds software to program and adapt the car. I have vcds and I’m in Kent 👍🏽 let me know. All the best boys great content as always
Also there is 2 types of manual Vw gearbox oil for the main gearbox(not mechatronic) be careful to select the right one as Vw had used the wrong one of a period of time and gearboxes were failing as it was reacting with the metal on the sensors. There was a recall on this. Be advised do not use DSG oil for the main gearbox. It’s manual gearbox oil for the main gearbox. Always use genuine oil. DSG oil is only for the wet clutch 6 speed dq250 which this is not. Again if you want help in this please let me know and I’ll reach out on Instagram.
Love your shows watch every one but can your wire Chris up with a Bluetooth mic or something please as you have to turn the volume up to hear him but then turn it down when you speak as your so much louder and it’s interesting to hear what Chris has to say apart from that good show keep up the good work 👍
Looks like the engineerree of that acumulator body took account of the wall thickness under pressure but not the threads wedging it open aswell. When Me and my mate was young, we used to make gocarts out of bits of wood and pram wheels. We found some aluminium nails to make the go carts faster, never forget how light they felt back then. Thems was the days, going to the top of an abandoned multi story carpark and pushing off from the top floor and down 6 floors of ramps and the big ramp at the end :D
Yet another gearbox, you will be specialists soon. I have to say that I couldn't really undestand how that thing works. I will have to look at RU-vid! Thanks Rob and Chris for another interesting video.
The part is called Mechatronics (German word for mechanical electronics) 👍. Its a well known fault and i think the control unit needs programming to the gearbox (if it’s replaced)
To think that not long ago, German engineering had such a reputation for reliability - now we have DSG - Disney Standard Gearboxes. Every day is a learning day on SRUK...
long time subscriber, kiwi living in Thailand love the videos One big thing !!! can you get Chris a Mike!!! very difficult to hear him speak. keep up good work
Great video, I had this issue a few years ago on my Audi A4. When the issue happened it felt like the car was going to explode - the vibration was crazy. Cost me about £4K to fix and is why my Audi specialist warned me this will always happen on VW and Audi’s and why I’ll never buy one of these brands again. I got a replacement unit, fascinating to see you can rebuild them.
Come rain or shine you can always guarantee it's bright and sunny in Salvage Rebuilds yard thanks to Chris making everything look so damn easy!!! It would be an interesting exercise to work out just how much Chris saves you two in the cost of parts over a year. As I have said before the man is pure genius. Well done chaps, and fingers crossed this is the only problem on this Audi... what a stunning looking car. Cheers, Bob
