MY FINAL CANADIAN STUDMUFFIN VIDEO FOR THIS CHANNEL: • SAYING GOODBYE TO THIS... I've lost monetization on this channel and my appeal was rejected with no reason given for what I've done wrong. If anyone would like to donate I would really appreciate it: paypal.me/canadianstudmuffin I rely on income from RU-vid to help pay my bills as I no longer work due to health issues. I was on disability but that ended in 2023 when I turned 65. Another way to help out is to join my Patreon song and album requests channel at / larrygraves . I can't reapply for monetization until Sept. 15th. but I think I am sadly done with this channel. I will only be only uploading new content on my 2nd channel (which is still monetized) at / @larrygravescanadianst... so please subscribe.
P.S I've received a lot of kind words and donations and I truly thank everyone for their help!

I'm still re-listening to this, although it's really hard to see this as topping Hippopotamus. But as usual Sparks are the Stanley Kubrick of music--if you listen to them enough you start to see how brilliant they are. I am particularly fond right now of Onomato Pia. It reminds me of one of my favorite songs from Indiscreet, Pineapple. The melody is insane like right out of a fever dream from someone in a mental hospital, but it totally works. Pure Sparks.

I'm 23, I'd heard some of the old stuff, like This Town Ain't Big Enough and The #1 Song In Heaven, throughout my childhood and really liked them but I never really delved into them. I bought Hippopotamus in 2018 and I liked some tracks, it didn't blow me away though and I thought they were an oddity. But now after listening to A Steady Drip Drip Drip, I must say I've become a huge fan! Preordered the CD and Beret. Its such a fresh sound and the fact that they are, sorry Russ and Ron, quite old and still sound ahead of everyone in the music business is outstanding! Great review!

After almost a week of listening to it constantly, it's my 3rd favourite album after indiscreet, and no.1 in heaven. For a band that's into their 7th decade in music, they never fail to astound me.

A few years back, my wife and I traveled to Toronto from Ohio to witness the Revenge of 2 Hands one Mouth tour. Stood right next to you. What a experience in a small venue. In 1976 saw the band Sparks in Akron, Ohio. They opened for Patti Smith. Keep on the amazement for all these years.

great review, didn't have high expectations for this because three of the four songs released beforehand i thought were just okay, for me though it's definitely a case of those songs working better in the context of the album and after about a week i love it and would agree that it's one of their best - a bit early to say but it's definitely top 6 7 or 8 for me - kind of reminds me of a more modern sounding indiscreet

If you'd said to me back in 74' when I first played Kimono that in 2020 I'd be listening to a brand new album as great ( if not better ) by the same band I'd have said you were Nuts. Fabulous.🎹🎤

Hi Larry Kimono My House I bought when it first came out . Without doubt you are probable the biggest Sparks fan . Your passion for them comes across when you talk about their albums. Their new album has been getting great reviews in the music magazines. Keeping you smiling in these strange times, as indeed are all your videos .Many thanks

I saw Sparks here in the UK in 1974, promoting Kimono My House, and they were fantastic, loved 'em ever since. What I have heard so far is like you say right up there, and it does sound even better than Hippopotamus, I just love Please Don't Eff Up My World, roll on July 3rd when the vinyl is released.

I discovered Sparks thanks to you and since I became a fan. But I was not expecting much of this album because I am mostly fan of the early ones. I am surprised I love it so much and I was expecting your review, now I can see that we have the same feeling about it. Great album !

I love this album too. If you preordered it from their shop, while waiting for cd/lp, you can download it as mp3 after logging, it should be better quality than youtube.

I also love the new album and listen to it every day, at least 2 times. "All That" always reminds me of a Beatles song, played in a modern way. Or John Lennon's "Give Peace A Chance". And I also think it might be even better than Hippopotamus, but it's difficult to say that. Both albums are really brilliant and also very different from each other. So it's not easy to compare them.

Thanks again for turning me on to Sparks. There’s lots of fun music on the new album. I especially like Onomato Pia, a Beatle-era Paulish bouncer, and iPhone, as well as the early realeased songs Self-Effacing and I’m Toast. Please Don’t F*** Up My World is perfect as the final track.

I listened to all three songs Larry and Sparks are a very interesting, unique and talented band with my favorite song of the three songs being Lawnmower, now how many bands could or would write a song about a lawnmower and have it actually be a good song?,not very many but Sparks and Sparks alone can and do pull it off,I love that song Larry and Ron's beginning to look a little like a creepy old man as he gets older,it actually adds to the bands image, now I got to go and listen to Lawnmower again Larry for the umpteenth time! Bo.

I love it. I've ordered all the formats of it, including the cassette. It's probably in my top 5 too already. All that, left out in the cold, Pacific standard time and onomato pia are my early favourites. Left out in the cold is like the lovechild of equator and profile. Do you still plan to do a review of the gratuitous sax demos Larry?

I think the songs are good and really creative like always, but the sound is really thinny and not as warm as with for example the 70s albums. What do you think about the sound/production, Larry?

I actually agree with you! I don’t like the thin, fake-sounding production of their 21st century albums. The songs on all of them are so good that I listen past it, but their cold, sterile, flat sounding production on recent albums isn’t to my taste.

Larry, I’ve considered getting into Sparks since you talk about them so much, but don’t know where to begin. What are some albums you would recommend starting with? Also, it’s worth noting that I’m not stranger to weird music. Zappa is in my top 10, so it’s definitely not a turn off. 😁

I would agree with other commenters about recent poor high end production on Sparks albums....I have to set my treble lower as esses sound sooooo thin....that aside A Steady Drip wowed me as much as Hello Young Lovers when first heard it....it's up there....great songs of highest calibre. Also Hippopotamus is one of the poorest for me....Def worst of newer albums. But as you can probably guess I still like it.... because it's sparks!!!!!!!🤣🤣🤣😔

A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip I listened 4-5 times because it takes some to get into it. We don’t have a new Sparks every day. I am not so dithyrambic in my appreciation but it certainly matches the best Sparks albums. Sounds like a sequel of Hippopotamus. Sparks album often come in pairs (1-2, 3-4, 8-9, 10-11, LB-HYL) and here history repeats itself. Most catchy tune Self-Effacing. But the last one song I listened to each time I stop the music is quite sure to remain in my brain for hours and hours and hours. In 2006 Sparks were proclaiming "There’s No Such Thing As Aliens", which is to my advice an apology of skepticism and now with Nothing Travels Faster Than The Speed Of Light, they seem to contradict their previous message and cast doubts on skepticism. (Unless I’m totally wrong.) Strange guys these Mael brothers!

Mmmmmm, this isn't better than Hippopotamus man... Great album, obviously. They are Sparks after all, but the songs aren't that strong. All That and iPhone are EXCELLENT. But no one song is better than Life With The Macbeths or even I Wish You Were Fun. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the album, but I feel most Sparks fans overrate this album only because has a similar vibe to Indiscreet.

I feel the opposite; I feel most Sparks fans overrate Hippopotamus. To me, that is by FAR their weakest album of the last five. It’s still fantastic, but IMHO Lil’ Beethoven, Hello Young Lovers, and *especially* the new one and Exotic Creatures Of The Deep are all WAY better than Hippopotamus. Hippopotamus has very flat sounding production and too many songs. I agree that the two you mentioned from it are great, but I’m Toast, Lawnmower, Onomato Pia, The Existential Threat, Stravinsky’s Only Hit, etc are all stronger songs than those two. To me, anyway! Taste is a strange thing!
