MY FINAL CANADIAN STUDMUFFIN VIDEO FOR THIS CHANNEL: • SAYING GOODBYE TO THIS... I've lost monetization on this channel and my appeal was rejected with no reason given for what I've done wrong. If anyone would like to donate I would really appreciate it: paypal.me/canadianstudmuffin I rely on income from RU-vid to help pay my bills as I no longer work due to health issues. I was on disability but that ended in 2023 when I turned 65. Another way to help out is to join my Patreon song and album requests channel at / larrygraves . I can't reapply for monetization until Sept. 15th. but I think I am sadly done with this channel. I will only be only uploading new content on my 2nd channel (which is still monetized) at / @larrygravescanadianst... so please subscribe.
P.S I've received a lot of kind words and donations and I truly thank everyone for their help!

I bought the 33 in 1976 and have been playing it for 47 years. Brilliant lyrics and especially the track White Women!

These album covers truly are fantastic and very entertaining to look at

They used NYC musicians on this, including the Tuff Darts Jeff Salen. A kick ass album that Ron & Russell were apparently disappointed with.

The bonus cd includes Russel Mael's Gone With the Wind, which is a really funny song about what it might have been like to be an extra on the set of Gone With the Wind. It was included on the Big Beat Deluxe version even though it sounds more like an Indiscreet-era outtake. Also Looks Aren't Everything is a fantastic outtake which I can't believe they left off the album. Least favorite song: Fill 'er Up. Pretty fast-paced but somehow not very interesting, with sub-par lyrics (at least compared to the Ron Mael standard). Favorite song: I Like Girls, which along with 1982's Eaten By the Monster of Love is one of their best, pure fun party songs.

Yes, those songs were actually from Indiscreet recording sessions, so weird to have them on Big Beat.

Sparks are interesting, they sound like something from a 1940's Disney cartoon,a very original sound and very talented, they're not for everybody but I can see why those who like them love them. Bob.

I read in the book talent is an asset that sparks submitted 20 songs for the album. And they ran through them all twice. And from that Rupert had to work out the track listing and running order of the album before they'd even started recording it. Time constraints might have been a contributing factor in the production not being as good as on other albums. Stand out songs for me are confusion, screwed up, I bought the mississippi River and fill er' up. But my favourite on big beat is throw her away and get a new one purely for the funny lyrics. Thanks again for the review Larry, and I'm looking forward to the introducing sparks one. 😊

Good review. A very solid album, no Sparks classic but it works from top to bottom. I like it.

Big beat is top 3 in their album catalog. Just love When they do it the rock/punky way. Sad they seldom play these songs live nowadays Favorites; ”Mississippi river” and ”Filler’up”

You didn't say anything about the Beatles cover I Want To Hold Your Hand.

I love it. It's not on the original album and that is all that I focus on when doing these rankings, not b sides or bonus tracks, thanks.

After the huge 4 classics of the 70’s, one day or another, Sparks would face a sort of anti-climax. They could not keep the pace of their core age forever. In addition, they had to renew themselves and renew they did. This one, Big Beat is slightly inferior to the previous ones. But it is a good album, different enough. Some songs are a little controversial like Big Boy, White Women, I Like Girls. Or is it just Ron’s special comic sense? Fill-Er-Up, is the song I select to be on my Sparks, One Album One Song playlist. I remember having viewed a 70’s movie called Rollercoaster where someone placed a bomb in the attraction. To my surprise, Sparks were performing 2 songs Big Boy and Fill-Er-Up.

This is my desert island Sparks LP. First one I bought on cassette in a Boots sale for not much in 1977. It was worth a punt to hear a Sparks album for the first time. It began my obsession with the group! I like the contrarian lyrics, and the weird mix which buries Ron's piano. Deft touches here and there, like the string synth on "Mississippi," the exotic drumming on "White Women" and its old time melody. Many of the songs sound like advertising jingles....almost "The Who Sell Out." The Who loom large in the riff department. Everything sounds out of place, and inappropriate. There's even a certain discomfort in the sleeve photography. I personally think this is the quintessential Sparks album. Also a great rock album which stood miles apart from the rest.

Awesome album. I personally like the previous 3 more, but this one is still noteworthy. The drums are most certainly pushed up in the mix. More guitars in the mix, too. Favorite song is I Bought The Mississippi River, with Throw Her Away (And Get A New One) as second favorite, musically speaking; the lyrics are touchy, but pretty hilarious, nonetheless.

For me this would be only a b. On the weaker side of the sparks album discography. For me anyway...
