MY FINAL CANADIAN STUDMUFFIN VIDEO FOR THIS CHANNEL: • SAYING GOODBYE TO THIS... I've lost monetization on this channel and my appeal was rejected with no reason given for what I've done wrong. If anyone would like to donate I would really appreciate it: paypal.me/canadianstudmuffin I rely on income from RU-vid to help pay my bills as I no longer work due to health issues. I was on disability but that ended in 2023 when I turned 65. Another way to help out is to join my Patreon song and album requests channel at / larrygraves . I can't reapply for monetization until Sept. 15th. but I think I am sadly done with this channel. I will only be only uploading new content on my 2nd channel (which is still monetized) at / @larrygravescanadianst... so please subscribe.
P.S I've received a lot of kind words and donations and I truly thank everyone for their help!

Interesting, great production and phenomenal guitar playing Larry,Sparks in Russia and Sparks in California, hmm, well they are California boy's after all so it should not come as a surprise our seeing them doing a Beach Boys style song and them doing it well,Ron and Russell Mael, those guy's are two very talented fellows. Bob.

This is a great collection of songs, a bit of a mess if you like thematic consistency in your albums, but I like Sparks when they just throw a bunch of wild pop songs at you. My favorite is actually Forever Young, which produced right could have been an early punk song. Instead of being about someone's child or a movie star who died early (like every other song called Forever Young) this one is more about an attitude of refusing to grow old, and sneering at those who do. It's so outlandish but it's so funny, and I love Russel's energy in the chorus. I guess my least favorite is Girls on the Brain, which sounds a little too generic blues for my taste but it probably sounded fresher in the 70's. Everything else, especially Those Mysteries, A Big Surprise, Goofing Off, Occupation, all gems. I believe the bonus edition has a couple of interesting demos I would have liked to hear fleshed out, but they are pretty rough. One is called BREATHE which sounds like They Might Be Giants before They Might Be Giants had even graduated high school, the other is Fact or Fiction which could have been written for the Grease soundtrack. Too bad they never revisited those.

That guitar solo in Goofing Off -- it's stingingly epic, its high notes echoing the violin arpeggios that it dances with.

The guy on the cover looks like David Hogg. I said to myself "What is HE doing on an album cover?!"

I listened to this album yesterday, coincidentally. Yes, they were introduced late - but they sure did a good job of it!

This is really the first Sparks album that I listened to. In the late 70’s one of my friend had bought it for its reduced price (I think that all my 70’s Sparks albums have a hole in the sleeve). I was not particularly thrilled by it. But my pal was playing it often and with time I catched Goofing Off and Forever Young (and the rest). This was enough to activate my Sparks passion. I bought successively Indiscreet, Kimono My House, A Woofer In Tweeter’s Clothing but I could not find Propaganda anywhere. I had to search for months in second hand stores to get it. (Record stores had loads of Pink Floyd and Police records but kept just one copy of Sparks albums sometimes two. And one weirdo like me was jumping on it quickly. As a result Sparks section was always nearly empty or plain hollow.) Then I had cracked for this unconventional band. They are so Americans. The song I put on my Sparks, One Album One Song playlist is Forever Young (not to be confused with Alphaville’s classic which is a masterpiece too).

This album was the holy grail for me. When I first heard sparks in 1979, I quickly tracked down their back catalogue except introducing, which took me 8 or 9 years to eventually find. I really rate this album, stand out tracks for me are goofing off, those mysteries, occupation, and forever young. But my favourite song on here is I'm not. I love the line 'you're not my type but you can stay, that's long enough now go away' thanks again for the review Larry, and I'm looking forward to No1. In heaven. 😊

Introducing Sparks was a let-down for me when it came out, but as I've said before, now I love all Sparks albums unconditionally because each of them is an artifact of an oeuvre so impressive and important that they all deserve respect and revisiting. As for the cover, I thought it was hilarious, not just Hollywood glamorous, partly because of the joke title and partly because of the affected, identical outfits and poses. Now I'll go and revisit that guitar solo in Goofing Off that you mentioned. Thanks Larry!

That's funny. I consider Forever Young to be one of their best tracks (along with Those Mysteries and Goofing of), and I consider Over the summer one of their weekests. Anyway, it's interesting to see different points of view. Great video, as always Larry

I never thought Sparks were gay - I DID however think they were German. Probably Ron's moustache, and Mael sounds like a German name, eh.

Larry or anyone: Would you say they are primarily a funny band like They Might Be Giants?

No... not a joke band at all... just witty and intelligent.

@@canadianstudmuffin I wasn't implying they were a joke - it's just that their emphasis seems to be on humor - which is the exception in the music world
