@hoppyaboutbunnies
@hoppyaboutbunnies 3 года назад
Hi, that's amazing that you rescued. Spay is more invasive compared to a neuter as it requires more cuts to remove the reproductive organs due to their location in the body that's why females tend to take longer to recover after the procedure. Besides a slightly longer recovery, spay recovery is similar to a neuter recovery so don't worry everything will be okay xx

@@hoppyaboutbunnies what’s the general cost of the neuter? Do you have to have pet insurance?
@hoppyaboutbunnies
@hoppyaboutbunnies 3 года назад
Hi, the cost depends on the vet practice but it's usually £50-100 per rabbit. If you would like to find out more about spaying and neutering in general, check out my All About Spaying / Neutering a Bunny video in the Important Medical Information Playlist that you can access from my channel homepage under the playlists tab. Pet insurance unfortunately does not cover standard medical procedures like neutering or spaying, however I really do recommend getting one in case your bunny will ever need emergency medical treatment or surgery. It will significantly help with the medical fees in these situations. xx

Quick question , my bunny has a regular litter box from the 99 cents store thats ment for cars my bunny does a mini hop to get in , should I purchase a whole smaller litter box so he can walk in the box ? And should I set an alarm for the night time to check on my bunny ? To make sure he dosent eat or pick at his stitches ?
@hoppyaboutbunnies
@hoppyaboutbunnies 3 года назад
Hi, ideally you want the litter box to be as short as possible so that your bunny doesn’t have to hop high to get in. If your current litter box is already relatively short then I would say that’s fine. In regards to setting an alarm it’s up to you, if you see that he’s not bothered about the stitches during the day then he would probably be alright during the night. However, if it will give you some peace of mind to check up on him during the night then go for it- every bun and person is different. The first couple of days are the most important when it comes to stitches as they are still in this raw sensitive state, so you should keep a close eye on him during that time

I have two female rabbits, born in July of this year. Should I get them spayed now or wait ? Also you recommend getting them spayed together or weeks apart from each other? If they are both spayed at the same time, is it best to keep them separated for a few days? How long it takes them to heal?
@hoppyaboutbunnies
@hoppyaboutbunnies 2 года назад
They’re still too young to get them spayed now, normally the females need to be 6 months old for a spay procedure. If they were born in July then you need to wait until January to get them spayed but it’s best you also consult this with your vet. I think getting them spayed together is absolutely fine and it will save you some trips to the vet but if you prefer to spay them separately that’s also okay. Yes, if you spay them together then it’s best to keep them separated for about 2 weeks until they are both fully healed and to avoid them picking at each other’s stitches. Normally it takes between a week and 10 days for them to heal but like I mentioned above, keeping them apart for 2 weeks is best and precautionary. Hope this helps x

My rabbit just neutered today and I keep seeing him lick his wound, although I keep stopping him when caught I’m afraid when I sleep he will keep licking it and maybe rip the glue off. I’m also not able to actually see the wound without him freaking out to know if he has opened it or not. Idk maybe I’m overreacting do you think it okay for him to lick it?
@hoppyaboutbunnies
@hoppyaboutbunnies 3 года назад
Hi, I had the very same problem with Snow when she got spayed. The next day after the surgery she started picking at the wound and I was scared she will infect it and rip the stitches apart. Contact your vet, send them a picture of the wound if you can and see what they recommend. The best way is to quickly take the picture when he is exposing the wound himself by lying down etc. Maybe a medical bunny shirt might be a good idea. Buster collar should be the last resort and only a soft one. They really freak out and start running frantically when you put it on them hence why it should be avoided. I took Snow to the vets to make sure she hasn’t infected the wound as it looked quite red, they said it was fine. She left the wound alone the next day. It’s not the best for them to lick the wound as they can potentially infect it or rip the glue / stitches so I would definitely double check with the vet about what to do in this case. I hope everything’s going to turn out fine, good luck xx

Do you think I could put together my 1 and a half year old with my new unspayed 2 month old rabbit once I get the older one spayed? There both the same gender
@hoppyaboutbunnies
@hoppyaboutbunnies 2 года назад
Hi, since neither bunnies are spayed they won’t be able to bond successfully. The older bunny might start attacking the younger one due to their territorial behaviour which can lead to serious injuries. I would keep them separated until you get both of them spayed. The older one is ready to be spayed whereas depending on the gender the younger one will be ready at 5 months if male and 6 months if female. You will also need to wait about a month for the hormones to calm down after the surgery to start the bonding process. Also just bear in mind that it’s usually harder to bond bunnies of the same gender so it might take longer compared to bonding bunnies of the opposite sex. Hope this helps x

I got my bunny neutered yesterday. He’s been eating romaine, hay, and his pellets just fine, but he hasn’t drank any water which is concerning. I also catch him licking himself down there, i can’t tell if he’s grooming around it or licking the wound. Is there anything i can do to prevent him from doing so? THANKS 🐰
@hoppyaboutbunnies
@hoppyaboutbunnies 2 года назад
You can wet the romaine lettuce in water in order to get that hydration into him or try giving him water via syringe. I would observe the wound for now, even if he’s licking the wound it shouldn’t easily get infected from him licking it. If you see that there’s a lot of redness around the wound I would get it checked out with the vets. It’s not recommended to put a cone on the rabbit as they really freak out but if you are really worried about the wound getting infected or stitches being ripped apart you can put a medical shirt on him to limit his access but that should be a last resort. I’ve found that they’re not bothered about their wound as much anymore after couple of days though

I’ve been wanting to get a new bunny but most of the ones I see for sale are not spayed/neutered and are 6+ months old Is it ok for me to get it spayed/neutered before bringing it home or should I have it home for a couple of months first?
@hoppyaboutbunnies
@hoppyaboutbunnies 2 года назад
Hi, I would highly encourage you to adopt a bunny from a shelter rather than buy one, there’s so many that need a loving home. Majority of the bunnies in shelters will have already been spayed / neutered so you won’t have to deal with it. You can always get a bunny who hasn’t been spayed / neutered and then fix them yourself. Females will need to be 6 months old for spay and males around 5 months old but always consult a vet beforehand. Shops will never sell bunnies who have been spayed / neutered this is something you will have to do yourself.

My male bun just got neutered today but the vet didn't gave any pain medication or any emergency food he only gave me betadin to use it on my rabbit.. He has eaten a Few bites of banana.. What do I do( I am from India)
@hoppyaboutbunnies
@hoppyaboutbunnies 3 года назад
Hi, I would give a call to your vets and ask for the pain medication, which should’ve been provided with the procedure in the first place. The vets wouldn’t give you emergency food but you can get critical care food for rabbits online or maybe in some pet shops without prescription. I got mine from Amazon and it’s the Oxbow brand but any other brand is fine. However, before giving critical care to your bun, try hand feeding him hay and fresh veggies first, as critical care has to be syringe fed and should be used as a last resort . The fact that he’s been eating banana that’s a really good sign, you can entice him with some aromatic herbs such as basil, coriander and parsley to get his stomach to carry on moving and avoid gut stasis. Normally during the first few hours after the procedure they tend to be very sluggish and won’t eat much but keep trying to hand feed. Nibbling on small amounts is better than nothing and hopefully after about 8 hours or so he should start to get his appetite back. If you notice that he’s still not really wanting to eat either by himself or while being hand fed then feed critical care but also continue hand feeding. Hope this helps x

Hi, I know it’s scary. Snowball was also picking at her stitches for the first few hours of the procedure and I was scared she will rip them open. I found that she stopped the following day but I contacted the vets the next day to double check she hasn’t done any damage (she didn’t, it was fine) I would advise you to contact your vet to see what they suggest and to get his stitches checked out if you’re worried. Collars should be a last resort for bunnies as they freak out when you put in on them. Medical shirt is an option, they can be pricey but you can get it online and ultimately it will limit his access to the wound and stitches so it can heal properly

@hoppyaboutbunnies
@hoppyaboutbunnies 3 года назад
Hi, I don’t know which vets you’ve gone to but it sounds like they know nothing about rabbit surgery, i would stay far away from them. Rabbits aren’t like dogs or cats, they don’t have a gag reflex which means they can’t vomit nor choke. Not giving your bunny any food or water for such a long time will result in them going into severe gut stasis which is deadly. I would go to a vet that is specialised in rabbits, as some vets simply do not have an appropriate knowledge about them. I’ve worked with many vets on rabbit spays/neuters and i’ve never encountered a vet that said to people ‘don’t feed a bunny before the procedure’. Rabbit’s digestive system has to be constantly moving, otherwise they can die and rather quickly. If I could I would report these vets, they shouldn’t even be vets if they don’t know basic anatomy and systems of rabbits but operate on them, that just makes me mad!

They'll give you a payment plan and if you finish paying on time they'll charge you no interest. The interest rate if you don't pay within the deadline is hefty though.
