Performance Art has risen to prominence in visual art culture over the past fifty years, but I wonder if it still is seen as something separate to the audience. So many pieces of work in this oeuvre are in some way demanding of their audience; I question, are we participants as soon as we witness the performance, and are we ourselves performers in our engagement with art (of any kind). Photographer Bill Wadman and I continue our ongoing dialogue about the nature of art and the experience of the visual; enquiring into the recent work by British artist Stuart Semple, the current work on show at the Royal Academy of Arts by Marina Abramovic, and the legacy of the brilliant Ana Mendieta, we ask if we are indeed part of the experience of these works beyond simply seeing.
