Great talk guys very helpful, I've been spearing for a while now but had a break for 6 months and needed a touch up before heading out in the morning. Cheers

Awesome information, I am 64 yrs old . Getting used to holding my breath, but I am not as strong as I thought I was, wow,what a wake up call I had. 6 weeks now in the pool at the Y. Getting much better, thanks bearhunter5

You'd think this was all obvious stuff but some people need to be told/taught it. I'll never forget how furious I was when a dive buddy accidentally gave me a prod up the arse with his spear (on the loaded gun) because he was distracted and staying close in poor viz. Good job we wear thick suits in Cape Town. Never dived with him again.

At about 9 min in, it shows a diver blacked out deep. FII teaches to grab the diver by bottom of the chin and back of neck with one hand on each, to protect the airway, with chin fingers also up and clamped on the nose (in case of water in mask), then swim the victim fast to the surface, get the correct hold to keep face out of the water, take mask off face, than tap, talk ("breathe!) and blow on their face. (However, this video shows grabbing the unconscious diver by the armpits. THIS DOES NOT PROTECT THE AIRWAY from inhaling water.)
@seadevil11
@seadevil11 9 лет назад
quattro, when you think about it, the divers head will roll forward blocking the airway, also when you think about it, speed is key, the few seconds you take to do this action and the few extra seconds you have created by this method you describe perhaps make a disfference. You mention "fast" so I like "fast" too. Erez Beatus is world acclaimed, I think he knows what he is on about. Thank you

seadevil11 Hi Seadevil. A question... Can you breathe through your mouth with your head rolled forward loosely as if unconcious? I can, try it. If you can, then the airway is not 'blocked' for an unconscious diver either. I'd argue that it's easier and faster to grab the head, from virtually any approach angle, vs armpits you can only reach best from a front or back approach. The head grab is faster. After you're already fining upward then you can shift to close the nose off, that's the least important part if mask has integrity. Clamping the chin upward by towing the victim is the vital part. Recommend all to take the many experts at FII's advice, go for the head, it's fastest and safest for _airway _positive_ closure_. Erez is great for the rest of his training, but FII has a better procedure for this particular situation.

Leigh Anderson I've been trying since I read your post and I cannot breathe through my mouth when it is closed. As for the rest of your comments Leigh, yes you could argue yet I think you will still call them cantaloupes and I'll still be calling them rockmelons... Cheers for your comments though.

Nice work guys... Need to say few words though... Mistakes been made: 1) In case of a black out, the firstthing teammate shoulddo, is to unleash the belt from the victim 2) The belt is in the wrong position. Never on your waist. Always a little lower... To the hips 3) Don't dive and look the bottom of the ocean. The head must be straight, almost just before you reach the bottom 4) I noticed some dives with the snorkel in his mouth. Never do that 5) Equalisation starts BEFORE you feel ANY pressure and not just right after

I really want to start spear fishing but with the word blackout mention so many times during this video and having no one to fish with I'm starting to think about it now.

I'm exactly where you are at in terms of the risk vs reward of this sport. Personally going it alone isn't really daunting if you are good at setting limits and really taking it slow! If like me you're in it to fish, consider becoming comfortable with the freediving aspect at first. Slowly feeling your way, discovering your personal limits. Then within those limits, incorporate the fishing. I've also picked up that when spearfishing, spearo's use flashing lures suspended from a float, just like anglers, this can help attract the fish to you, so less diving. The only variable you can't control is sharks, maybe someone can help me out in that regard? :/ Again, probably the only thing that can save you is having an extra pair of eyes to keep a look out when the other is diving and is on hand if you get bitten. From what I can tell, just like with the movie "Exhale" the guy who blacked out focused intently on getting THAT fish and lost sight of what point he should have pulled out.

Thank you I'm starting next month, I'm getting all my stuff together. I live on an island where all year long we have over 80 f so I have no rush. I'm thinking of also starting a channel dedicated to that to help people like me...

Rafael Breban Theres so many online resources to find dive buddies it'll make your head spin. Don't be shy, they are usually very nice. I'm also a beginner but I have had a few successful solo trips in only about 15ft of water

Question on equalization... When scuba diving, I used the Doc Thompson earplugs (perforated, so it allows the pressure change to the ear, but slower). What is people’s experience with these in snorkel/spearing depths and dive patterns?

Join a club in your area or try and get a friend to come out with you. They don't have to have all the fancy gear, just fins, a polespear, mask and a bag.

why cant you use a weight to hang on to down to bottom. You use less energy and oxygen on your way down and you can stay under water for longer time?
