Is there a way to find out if these "off brand" sets are original designs, or if they were taken from MOC builders?

James, I don't know of any official way for finding this information out other than researching the internet. I did look this set up and there are a few larger and smaller MOCs out there but they don't look like this set. I can only imagine some brands will take inspiration from MOC sets but create their own set base on desired piece count and predetermined price points. However if a set is a copy i don't know of any way to find out if it was used by legal means or not. Great question, sorry there's no good answer though.
