Has to be one of the best Hornets displays I'v seen! whats you'r thoughts ?
Ilmavoimien F/A-18 Hornet-soolo palkittiin kahdella palkinnolla Royal International Air Tattoo -lentonäytöksessä Isossa-Britanniassa heinäkuussa 2019. Kapteeni Arto Uksosken lentämälle soololle annettiin lentonäytöksen parhaan yksittäisen esityslennon (Best Individual Flying Display) Sir Douglas Bader Trophy -palkinto. Ilmavoimien Hornet-soolo sai tunnustuksen toista kertaa peräkkäin, sillä viime vuonna palkinto myönnettiin kapteeni Lauri Mäkiselle. Lisäksi soolo sai RIAT-lentonäytöksen ystävien (Friends of the Royal International Air Tattoo) parhaaksi arvioimalle suoritukselle (Best Overall Flying Demonstration) myönnettävän As The Crow Flies Trophy -palkinnon.
Capt Arto Ukskoski's award-winning F/A-18 Solo Display at RIAT in 2019
The Finnish Air Force F/A-18 Solo Display flown by Captain Arto Ukskoski was awarded with the Sir Douglas Bader Trophy for best individual flying display at the Royal International Air Tattoo in July 2019. This was the second year in a row, as Captain Lauri Mäkinen received the same trophy in 2018. In addition, Captain Ukskoski was awarded with the As The Crow Flies Trophy for the best overall flying demonstration as judged by the Friends of the Royal International Air Tattoo.

The nozzles on the back of the exhaust can be rotated and thus increase maneuverability, especially at low speeds. It's also a safety feature because the pilot can regain control in a flat spin.

Terrific high angle of attack flying here. The Hornet doesn't have thrust vectoring nozzles, but in the hands of a skillful pilot it almost looks like it does. This pilot really knows his aircraft, the way an accomplished competitive aerobatic pilot would. I suspect he is flying closer to the edge of the operating envelope than they do at airshows here in the United States.
@Hairysteed
@Hairysteed Год назад
Thrust vectoring was tested by USAF and NASA in the 90s and was found not to be worth it. The addition of TVC increases the complexity and weight of the engine and adds points of failure decreasing overall engine reliability, thrust-to-weight ratio and fuel efficiency. Furthermore the same maneuverability increases can pretty much be achieved with advanced fly-by-wire algorithms.

The last time I saw any F-18 by an American that was even close to this, it was 1977 or 78 and it was actually the Northrop YF-17 Cobra. It was the much lighter prototype of the 18. Guess what? So how come the Finnish can fly an F-18 so much more capably than any other operators? It's like a whole different plane in this guy's hands. Is it just the pilot providing the x-factor here, or is there something technical or operating procedure-wise that allows them to push the aircraft beyond the bounds of other operators? The difference is so stark. I can't find another F-18 routine that comes even remotely close to this.
@Nipsukka10

From the website of the Finnish Air Force; Arto Ukskoski is a performance pilot for the first year and there have been only a few performance flights. In an interview, he says the Hornet differs quite a bit from a "normal" plane because there are few planes in the world that can make similar movements to the Hornet. The Hornet is able to move at really large angle of view and I think the movements of a large angle of view are quite spectacular. In the interview, he states; There will be a couple of new moves on the show flight that Hornet hasn’t done before, so an interesting show is coming up. The performance includes a lot of large-angle movements that look quite spectacular to the viewer. Let's wish good weather for the shows so that all the high vertical movements come true in the performances!

@Bread& Butter the Russians you see in airshows are the test pilot masters. The average russian pilot fly less per year that the average NATO 150 hours a year pilot. 75 to 100 hours a year is normal for russian pilot and it was less in the 90s. The Russian airforce was too big, and the economic crush of the fall of the URSS hit then hard. Now they are recovering but they did not fly as much. Russia is not moving from a quantity to a quality aproach and they are flying more. But that will mean a smaller air force. Probably a 500 fighters airforce.

@@robertblay9179 At least most NATO fighter pilots think the same you do... In WVR combat, they all prefer having the HMD (whether it is Striker II, JHMCS II, or the F-35's Gen III HMDS...) + highly maneuverable, high off boresight capable missile (it can be ASRAAM, IRIS-T, AIM-9X...) combo, than not having any these and instead having TVC.
@deltasierracharlie
@deltasierracharlie 4 года назад
@@martinw245 Well... kinda of... At least in the Raptor, TVC it not used to just greatly improve low speed, high AoA maneuverability at low altitudes. It is also used to greatly reduce trim drag at supersonic speeds, and to greatly help maneuvering at those same supersonic speeds and high altitudes. Are you aware of the FCS updates such as Version 10.7 Operational Flight Program (v10.7 OFP) Flight Control System upgrade to the F/A-18A-D (legacy) Hornet fighter aircraft? I quote _The new low airspeed and high AOA maneuvering capabilities inherent with the v10.7 software revolutionize how pilot aircrew will fight the aircraft. Further, the extremely enhanced resistance to sustained departure modes during out-of-controlled flight events will substantially reduce the frequency of aircraft mishaps and the associated loss of training and assets._
