Sound is a vibration that propagates as an acoustic wave through a medium. Sound waves are generated by a source of sound. As the source continues to vibrate the medium, the vibrations propagate away from the medium at the speed of sound. Thus the speed of sound is the distance traveled per unit time by a sound wave.
