Wow! Not only did you answer a question I always had about what the wire was for in the receiver package but now I don’t have to keep buying smart batteries for the data! Then I read all the comments and your useful responses. Thank you so much for taking the time and helping us all out.
I had bought a plane with this receiver and just bought my first one because I needed more than 6 channels. I didn't know what that wire was either. Great video.
Incredible production. So many different graphics. You put in there video examples. So flicking informative. Dude, you should be charging us for watching this. Well done
Thanks, Matthew. Excellent explanation with pictures. please make a video on checking the current using a current meter, and why do it. I usually check out the battery pack, check surfaces going in the correct direction and make signal tests from time to time and that's all
Thanks for a rational opinion! I agree completely - all the SMART items are way over priced. Once Spektrum realizes that their current pricing is not going to fly then begin to lower their prices to compete with other manufacturers, I'll jump on board especially with the ESC. I have 2 AR8020T receivers and they are great.

This was a very good video for a noob like me. Looking for information to decide what to buy as a first radio and I chose Spektrum NX10 together with AR8360T. I guess that I have a lot of stuff to walk through before I'm ready for my first airplane.
Those are good choices. You should also get the Spektrum USB dongle too and Real Flight simulator so that you can practice. Flying RC is fun and rewarding, but it is difficult to learn. The first crashes usually make people want to stop. Make your first 1,000 crashes happen on a simulator.

@@MatthewHeiskell I found some information that the NX10 should be able to connect to flight sim via USB. So I guess that the flightsim app is next on my list.
@@joshuajones5331 You know the ESC wires that you connect to your battery, connect the two voltage sensing wires there. (Solder the two little wires to the power input pads of the ESC)
Thank you for the time spent on this!!!!! excellent , no bs approach. where do you find all the connection leads for XBUS, SRXL2 ?? Thanks in advance, Mark
Matthew Does spektrum have a combination receiver and esc and smart battery that will warn you when your battery is below a selected voltage in the telemetry menu? Or do you have to use the sending wire that gets connected to you lipo ?
The simplest and cheapest solution is to use the telemetry receiver only, but you have to connect those two voltage sensing wires to the battery. The other option is to use the telemetry receiver and smart ESC together. That will work with any battery too. And you won’t need to connect those two voltage sensing wires to your battery.
I have a Avistar 40 with a OS 46 FX and im trying to find the right receiver to use with my DX6i. Its a DSMX so i was told it will work with the newer receivers. I dont need telemetry or any of that fancy stuff i just need a good receiver that wont lose signal. What is the right receiver you think I should get?
Sorry for the late reply, did you pick one? I usually look for receivers that have two long antenna, and place them carefully with a 90 degree separation angle using coffee straws.
@@MatthewHeiskell thank you for your reply. I went ahead with the AR 631 and the 410. I haven had an issue with the receivers yet. I've also had to replace the OS46fx with an OS AXii MAX. It's been a reliable plane since then.
Informative video. One question: can you see the drawn Mah on the telemetry if you have a combination of the Avian 40 amp dual smart ESC with a AR637TA receiver ?
Good question! You should be fine if you correct mount the two long antennas. They need to be far away from each other and the short active part at the end need to be 90 degrees from the other one. Basically, point one nose to tail, and point the other one wing tip to wing tip. You can examine the number of dropped frames after a flight. If the number is high, adjust the antennas or add a satellite receiver.
What I'm wondering... if I get the GPS module for my existing reciever can I have all the virtual fence functions of those airplanes with the GPS module installed?
That’s a good question! I’m not sure of the answer, but I think that the virtual fence capable receiver is a full blown flight controller. Adding a GPS to a normal telemetry receiver might be able to warn you when you’ve gone a certain distance, but I think it would need to be a flight controller to fly the plane homeward for you. Cheers Turbo Jones! Thanks for your other nice comments! 😄
Thank you. I'm moving toward electrics but I want to use my new TX with my older nitro models. Can I just run the same RX batteries after swapping out to the new receiver?
So I can use only the AR8020T receiver and get flight pack voltage back to my Spektrum radio? I do NOT have to have the Smart ESC nor Smart battery used in conjunction with this receiver...correct?
I'm a beginner, I've been flying the arrows Bigfoot RTF. I want to buy my first radio, I was looking to get a Nx6 or Nx8? My plane has flaps and I would like safe and motor cut off switch. Both radios that I'm looking at don't come with receiver.. So what what kind a receiver should I get it? Thanks
How do I get the pack voltage to work on my DX9, 2.08 firmware. Using a E Flite Turbo Timber Evolution. AR637TA receiver. It just keeps say flight pack no data
Well I am back, is it normal for warning no telemetry, All the time even, rolling up to my feet and I get no Telemetry even still I get no hold , this is very normal for all telemetry receivers ?
I discovered the cable as well. I now only need to add a balance lead connector and I am set. I tested it by taking the wires and simply inserting them into the battery balance lead and it worked great. However, I want something more permanent by attaching a connector. thanks for the great advice.
Hi Matthew! I have a NX8 / AR8020T receiver. I would like to have altitude/vario and battery telemetry. What do I have to buy in order to have this information in my radio? Thanks!
You don't need anything extra. You can do those things with what you have. That's basically what I did in the video, maybe watch it again? Lemme know if you still have questions! 😁
There might be, but I wouldn’t know. You’ll have to ask someone who know more about RC Trucks. I had to google it to even know what it was, haha. Good luck!
I was hoping that I could set up the telemetry to put out an audible warning that the flight battery was down to a certain voltage and then I would proceed to land rather than having to flick a switch to hear what the voltage was and then decide.
So you have the data on your screen, but you want it to speak when you hit a button or switch? You need to make a custom sound/voice event in the transmitter.
It’s scary thought that I might blow up the unit when I put high voltage lipo into the telemetry port. There’s no information about max voltage it can take. I took a chance to inject a 7s lipo, low and behold, it reads the voltage correctly and I didnt blow it up. I havent tried over 7s voltage, maybe anyone can find out whats the max voltage
@@MatthewHeiskell I couldn't find any info about it in spec sheet or manual on the net. OrangeRX and LemonRX mention in theirs. They could take up to 50V or 12s. It's a very disappointing that Spektrum is not very clear about their products
@@MatthewHeiskell But they are not I have a 636 that does not work any better than a cheap orangerx the AS3x wont activate The app doesn’t do anything OVERPRICED GARBAGE
Hi! very informative video. Happened to land on this channel as I am trying to learn if the AM8020T receiver can be used with Radiomaster TX16S which supports DSMX protocol? And if the telemetry features or at least the battery voltage telemetry could be used? This is to be used on a TREX 500XT helicopter with a BD AXON FBL system. Great if I could have your opinion.
Hello Vitor, that's a reallly nice helicopter. Are you sure that you want to fly with Spektrum? Why not FRSky or TBS Crossfire? The BD AXON FBL takes SBUS as input, right? You just really want voltage telemetry?
@@MatthewHeiskell Hi, thanks for coming back. Does not have to be Spectrum, It may be any system that works with Radiomaster and is adequate for that size of Heli. Both your suggestions are good, thanks. I never though about crossfire as I had it as very long range system, and rather expensive. But after reading your comment, I did some research and it might be a good contender. Thanks
I think those receivers are DSM2. Your old transmitter is DSM2, but your new transmitter is DSMX. You should be able to change a setting in your new transmitter to make it work as DSM2. Also, you might need to update the firmware of the transmitter.
I have the E-Flite BNF RV-7 and Turbo Timber 1.5m evolution can I get altitude from the recievers with my NX8 radio or to I need to add a telemetry altitude sensor?
You should be able to get altitude from those receivers. After you bind, and the control surfaces are responding, go to the telemetry page and select AUTO and it should populate.
I purchased an NX8 and the AR8020T receiver....does this have to replace the receiver that came with my cessna....can't seem to find a video on the installation of the new receiver that comes with the new radio or can I use the other receiver?
You can use the receiver that is already in the plane or you can use the new one if the original one does not have telemetry. But the first one might have SAFE, which makes it easier to fly.
@@MatthewHeiskell Thanks, I'll try to get it figured out. :) Also, I'm assuming the voltage meter is more accurate. My other RXs agree with it, but this one particular ar410 doesn't.
I guess in 2021 it’s cheaper and safe to go with a flight controller that won’t basically “fly away” and bring no matter what your model back or at least provide the last coordinates.
@@tlrcamp8009 Get them as far away as possible from each other and orient them 90 degrees to each other. (One up and one sideways) or (one up and one forward)
I have an NX8 radio, RV-7 airplane (advertised as supporting fly by telemetry) it has an Avian 45amp ESC lite, I am using a Spektrum 4s 2200 smart battery. I can not get any telemetry screen to display actual values. What is wrong ?
With the airplane and transmitter connected to each other, ready to fly, go to the transmitter's telemetry screen and click "auto setup". That should discover all the sensors and setup the display for you.
@@MatthewHeiskell Matthew, thanks so much.. I am making some progress.. I did the auto setup and it added smart esc, gforce and gyroscope to the telemetry screen. I now see info displayed on the esc screen - rpms shows up and works, temp is not working but I am guessing you must attach a sensor to the battery to have that available.. Now how do I get the battery voltage to display while I am flying or better yet how do I set a switch and get a voice to tell me the battery voltage while I am flying ? I put volts on the ticker tape option but it is not being displayed on the main menu???
@@lw216316 I don't like to EVER look at my radio while flying. I suggest that you set it to speak the battery voltage when you flip a switch. I suggest that you use a 2 position switch. In the normal menu, look for "Custom voice/sound event" or something like that. Select the 2 position switch. Put the voltage telemetry on both switch positions. Here is a gotcha: There are TWO voltage telemetry options. One will work and the other will not. One relies on the simple voltage sensing wire and the other relies on the smart ESC. Since You're using the smart ESC. It will read out voltage, current, and ESC temperature each time you move the switch.
That would be a great plane for the vario! You can turn the rising/falling tones on and adjust the volume. I bet you can turn it on/off with a switch in the custom voice setup menu.
