Thank you for the exercise video and I absolutely loved the part when you threw in the short clip of eggs getting beat.

I would call this technique »sautillé«: a bounce from a fast circular motion of the bow, with a combined pressure from the index finger and arm weight (the 'vertical part' Pablo refers to) - the bow-hair keeps on the string and 'only' the wood 'jumps' or bends periodically. Whereas »spiccato« refers to a (general) shortening of a note, which is oftentimes a 'brush stroke' from the wrist and shoulder, where the bow-hair leaves the string in a controlled manner [likewise from the balance point or near the frog to have a focused sound]. But one could think a lot of people (even a lot of string players) call it »spiccato« and Pablo chose to call it that way on purpose. - By the way: a very fine demonstration of »sautillé«

Great comment! Yes! You are absolutely right, that is in fact sautillé, I wasn’t sure if too many people were going to know the differences, so I decided to use a more “ generic” term as you mentioned, so more people might understand, but now that you mention it , I think I will actually change the thumbnail and include Sautillé as well. :) thanks for the great comment!

@@pabloferrandez Well, my pleasure! I was absolutely sure you'd know the difference. Thank you for sharing your insights, taking your time and being receptive to our questions and - in this case - my 'rambling' about a very 'pointy' detail. I'm sure everyone appreciates that (besides the overall content) - it just shows how you must love music/cello-playing and communicating (open-minded) in general.

Saludos.

To me this looks (and sounds) more like sautille... the hair actually stays on the string, the thing that is bouncing is the wood of the bow. I know some people call it "fast spiccato". But I like this video, it's really helpful! Specially like how you showed it from different angle, it's really easy to see what movement you're supposed to be doing!

Ola Pablo, do you have any comments on Sautille & influencing factors e.g. weather / different types of strings etc. For whatever reason, I found it works far easier and naturally on my crap cheapo acoustic than on my Yamaha Silent cello using the same bow, both have JArgar strings... or, it could be the humidity level possibly affecting the bow, not sure...as one cello is in Italy, the other in London

Spiccato and sautile are quite different bowings and require different technical approach.

Which is the difference between Staccato, Spiccato and Sautille?
@mauriziochirca8939
@mauriziochirca8939 Год назад
As I see it, they're kind of controversial depending in who has teach you. Someone say that you can do staccato between separeted notes (or short marteles) but other people say that is a group of marteles in the same direction of the bow (down-bow or up-bow). Sautille is used to accent notes in very fast passages. Personally, I see Spiccato as a brush type of staccato (with this I mean that you accent the notes coming off the string). In notation they're kinda similar. They're used for accent a note. I prefer spiccato than staccato though. I think it's more pleasant to the ear and more aesthetic for the viewer seeing it.
