Interesting your take on the fx. Personally I think that the choice they made to shoot as much as they could in camera for the film was for the better. Real sets and practical fx are always going to look more real than cgi. CGI backgrounds age. The aforementioned mcu films are a prime example.

I was born a year after this movie, but that doesn’t stop me from loving this movie. I absolutely adored the first Spider-Man movie when I first watched it. I loved how it depicts the origin of the character, I loved the acting, the blend of visual and practical effects, the story is excellent, Green Goblin’s a fantastic villain, it’s so fun, has a memorable score, it has great emotional moments, and it’s cheesy but in a good way. Sam Raimi was the perfect director for this movie, and the trilogy as a whole. It’s one of my favorite CBM’s of all time, and it’s one of my favorite Spider-Man movies ever!

I was born in 2008 and this movie came out in 2002. However, I’ve absolutely loved this movie since I was about 3. It is by far, my favorite Spider-Man movie, not just because of nostalgia but also because it’s an all around fantastic film. It’s also one of those movies I can rewatch about a thousand times and not get bored. Which goes for the whole Raimi Spider-Man trilogy. This movie was everything a Spider-Man movie should be; it had passion, energy, intrigue, excitement and so much more! I keep telling my friends to watch this movie but they’d much rather watch the Tom Holland films (which I will admit, are also quite good). Still, this movie is truly spectacular.

Back then, I liked anything with Spidey in it, haha. I still like the two TASM movies as a whole but I definitely don’t think they beat the Raimi trilogy, especially TASM 2 which I think is overall a really messy film. There are things I do really like about the Garfield movies but I personally think the Raimi series beats them in terms of quality. Despite the groundbreaking digital effects in the movie, younger audiences might be surprised to hear that shot where Toby catches all the food on the lunch tray was actually done for real. It only took 156 takes. You know if a movie was to try something like that today it would be 100% CGI cheese. They just don't make 'em like they used to.
@thefilmwatcher1216
@thefilmwatcher1216 2 года назад
I love this movie. There's some awkward dialogue and Maguire is clearly not high school age, but it's still awesome. Maguire is fantastic in the role, and the rest of the cast is awesome, especially Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin and the amazing JK Simmons as J Jonah Jameson. The CGI hasn't aged that well, but the action is still very cool. There's some great emotional moments, and some typically hokey moments that work very well. It's also just a classic Spider-Man movie, and with a lot of comic book characters, I like for the filmmakers to diverge a bit from the source material and do their own thing, but with Spider-Man, I feel like his source material is the best in comic history, and they should keep the character within that same mold, and this movie absolutely does that, and it does it so well. And seriously, how great is Dafoe as the Green Goblin? YA KNOW HOW MUCH I'VE SACRIFICED?
@spider-man500
@spider-man500 2 года назад
Definitely. Doing differences from the already told is not bad. It is creative and new. But when it comes to characters where the story and the characteristics are the most important parts of the character, you can go slightly different, but cannot IGNORE it. And statistically, Spider-Man has the most important story and characteristics of all time, because how seriously the source material takes it.

Because Tom's just isn't Spider-Man. There are so many reasons why Tom's sucks. While Tobey's is simple, it has one job to do. Make a good and true Spider-Man story. And it does both so well. No expanded universe to live up to, just it's own story. Tom's do a decent job of making an enjoyable MCU and comic book film, but the style of the MCU, "modern" Society and just the lack of Directors with knowledge AND care of these characters, that it effects the films both in general quality, and mostly faithfulness of the character.

I see what you're saying about how Goblin keeps showing up to mess with Spider-Man and it feeling clunky, but to me that's perfect and classic Spider-Man vs Green Goblin stuff. The dude is insane, like the Joker and Batman, Goblin just wants to mess with Spidey and piss him off for the hell of it. The character has a history of making Peter Parker's life hell, he killed Gwen Stacy and is the Wall crawler's greatest enemy for a reason.

I was such a big spiderman fan that when this came out as rated 12 in the uk (I was 9) I was gutted I couldn’t see it. My Nan wrote to the paper saying she thought it was ridiculous a character that kids like myself were inspired by wasn’t able to be seen by my age. Shortly after 12A was introduced in the UK and I was able to see it with my Nan. I always used to think that she was the one who brought that rating in (even though the story only went in the local paper) but it’s a memory I’ve always cherished long after her passing and a reason I love these films.

It even had this crazy teaser trailer a year before it came out where Spiderman caught thieves in a giant spider web between the twin towers. I saw it opening weekend and have loved it ever since. This is the reason we "old people" are so excited to see our Spiderman Tobey Maguire back in No Way Home.

One of the godfathers of the superhero movie genre. I remember, at just 9/10 years old, watching this movie for the first time. My mind was blown as to how incredible it was. It's still one of my all-time favorites in the franchise, and overall. I love this movie so much. Tobey Maguire is still my all-time favorite Spider-Man. Hard to believe that next year will be 20 years since its release.

I was old enough to see it on theaters when it came out, it probably was my first movie on theaters and I went with my older sister and my dad. I was obsessed with Spider-Man the whole year(my birthday party that year was Spider-Man themed) and well the years to come. It still holds a special place in my heart and memories because of the movie and because of the character. The last gift I received from my aunt who passed away a year after the movie's release is a Spider-Man themed item that I still use to this day. My fondest memories of me playing with my grandfather as a child also involves me pretending to be Spider-Man and probably driving him crazy talking about the movie. My grandfather passed away recently and those memories came back right away. Hell, I even think Tobey's performance of Peter shaped me while growing up, specially the parts where he acted as a chill guy that didn't want to start a fight with anyone and tried to be kind and honest. TL;DR: Movie is very special to me, it's campiness only adds to the charm of it, Tobey's performance somewhat shaped how I believe I am today and the movie and character of Spider-Man gifted me very special moments with family members and friends. I hope we see Tobey again on December.

I was born 3 months before this movie came out in the UK. I saw parts of it on tv growing up, but I never watched the entire movie until more recently. This was THE main superhero of my childhood though. I had a special Spiderman pen, a watch, a T-shirt, a packed lunch box and rucksack throughout nursery and the early years of primary school, so these movies had a big impact on my childhood even though I never got to see the movies in full

I was born in 1999 so I didn't see this or Spiderman 2 in theaters, but I do remember when 2 was released and I got to go see 3 in theaters (I had already seen 1 and 2 and loved them both by then). This whole trilogy is hugely important and nostalgic to me, and I think this movie holds up incredibly well. I've seen it many times over the years and continue to enjoy revisiting it. Spiderman 2 is definitely the best of the trilogy, and my favorite superhero movie of all, but this one is still a classic and a near-perfect start to Spidey's time on the big screen

30:28 There actually was a scene of his first time as Spider-Man where he stops a bank robbery. That scene was even used as a teaser for the movie. The reason that it was cut how even I because the scene involved Peter webbing a helicopter between the twin towers. As 9/11 had happened a few mouths before release, Raimi chose to delete the scene from the movie

Good Review. I was 1 to 2 when this film came out, I was first exposed to Spider-Man, superheroes and film with the DVD's of Spider-Man 1 & 2 on my 4th birthday, I would've loved to see Spider-Man 3 in Cinemas back in 2007 but had to wait for the DVD on my 7th birthday, I didn't see a Spider-Man movie until The Amazing Spider-Man. The Sam Rami Trilogy are magical to me they are my original trilogy and personally I don't mind the Green Goblin costume, Willem Dafoe eyes and mouth within the eyes and mouth of the mask is still so creepy it makes that silly outfit work. Looking forward to your future reviews/rankings and seeing Far from Home.

I was born in 2001, and when I was little I was OBSESSED with Spiderman as a character. My grandpa realized that, and he knew that these “new” Spider-Man movies were coming out at the time. So he bought me the Spider-Man 1 and 2 DVD pack. I watched it constantly, every day, at my grandparents house. I was obsessed with Tobey Maquires interpretation of the character, I was obsessed with every character. Aunt May and Uncle Ben were CARBON COPIES of my very own grandparents, and I felt their feelings and emotions in my heart in every scene they were in. When Uncle Ben died, I felt genuine fear of death. I felt genuine loss. I couldn’t get over the emotions that these movies had made me feel at such a super young age. These movies were more than just my childhood. They were my therapy. Because when I was 6, my grandpa died of cancer. I didn’t understand he was dying until he was already gone. It tore my world apart. Not only is Uncle Ben gone, who reminded me of him in every way, but now grandpa really IS gone. Now there’s nothing. My grandpas death drastically flipped my life over and it never flipped back. I’ve never felt so much sudden pain before, or after. I’ve recently had to abandon my family and hometown entirely, because of their toxicity and my parents abuse. That pain does not compare. My grandpas death only increased my love for these movies even more. Months before my grandpa’s passing, he bought me a double-disc copy of Spider-man 3, with special features, bloopers, the whole package. He knew I wanted as much Spider-Man content as possible. He knew what would make me as happy as possible. And I will always cherish these movies unconditionally till the day I die. These movies don’t just show the emotional archs of Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker. they reflect the emotional archs of my own childhood.

I was 12 when this came out in the cinema and I was obsessed with it! Seeing a live action Spider-Man swing through New York without looking like a cartoon or dreadful green screen blew my mind. The spidey costume was amazing and was just so cool to see my childhood hero transform from a tv cartoon series to blockbuster epic in the theatre. Absolute perfect age for that new generation of comic book movies. Even as a 7 year old I remember thinking Batman and Robin was pretty lame, so I was buzzing when Marvel introduced X Men and Spider-Man. Great vid Sean

There's very little I would change about it except maybe some of the pacing in the middle. I'm 16 years old and have loved this film ever since I first saw it, when I was about 5-6. I like the fact that you spoke about the practical effects. That's something that's always interested me in comic-book films. Don't get me wrong CGI ain't bad, but I've always liked when comic-book films use real stunts/sets/effects/etc. Also, yeah this film is kinda dated. But that's what makes it better for me (That's one main reason why I LOVE the first 2 Christopher Reeve Superman films) as it makes it feel as if it could take place at anytime. Nice review Sean 👍 & I can't wait for the one for Spider-Man 2🤞

I think I'm a younger viewer of your channel. My experience is that the 1st movie I remember seeing in theatres was Spiderman 3, which I liked at the time (I was like 4 so I didn't really get to understand the flaws so much then), then I went back and saw the 1st one on DVD, followed by the 2nd one so that I could get a view of the whole trilogy. I didn't mind it, but shortly after that Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk came out so I switched gears into the MCU (as well as The Terminator movies which I was way too young for), left the Raimi Trilogy behind, then caught the first Garfield one, thought it was good but I preferred the Raimi Trilogy although I didn't really get proper into it. Eventually I hit my early to mid teens and I really started appreciating different movies more and understanding the contexts better so I found my way back to the Raimi Trilogy, and absolutely love Spiderman 1, and I've really come around to understanding why the 2nd one is so loved as well (although I think that the Spiderman losing his powers plot line drags it down a but as it left a lot to be desired: either explain it better and tie it into his mental health linked back to the first one giving it strong thematic resonance, or don't do it period), and I still enjoy aspects of the 3rd film. I think that Thomas Haden Church was good as Sandman, I understand his character well, his motives make sense, however he was too shoe-horned into the retconned Uncle Ben murder which was poor, and Venom on the whole was just poor too. Didn't like the Harry has amnesia angle either. Could've just been Harry as tge villain with Sandman, Harry does tge switcheroo at the end, and Eddie Brock is in the 3rd movie, gets the Symbiote at the end, setting up Spiderman 4 with Venom as the villain. I've also come to enjoy the Garfield movies too especially the 1st one. He's phenomenal in both, as is Emma Stone. I don't mind the involvement of Peters parents either, but the Harry Osborne New Goblin in the 2nd movie was terrible. Also Electros motives seemed a bit too weak. I also thought the Spidey suit in the 2nd one was a massive downgrade on the 1st one. The two MCU Spiderman films are good enough MCU films, with Tom Holland being really good, and Michael Kenton's Vulture being fantastic in Homecoming, but Far From Home was whilst still fun enough, a couple steps down. I also prefer the more traditional style of the earlier instalments vs the MCU version.

I have an interesting arc with this movie, and the Raimi trilogy as a whole. I was 22 when it came out, saw it in theaters and was blown away, loved it. Fast forward to my 30s. I'm a parent, Spiderman was played on a loop in our home for a while, and since we now had films like Dark Knight and Iron Man, I started to think, how did I ever like this film? It's so campy and stupid, and some of the dialogue, ugh.. Now, I'm 42. I've looped back around to loving Spider-Man again. Not only for the cartoony vibe that makes it unique, but also for what it did for the comic book genre. If Blade and X-men opened the door, Spider-Man 2002 absolutely kicked it square off the hinges!
