John Romita Sr. took over Spider-Man in 1966 and made the book his own (it soon became Marvel's top seller). He reflects back on his favorite issues, taking over for Steve Ditko and more.

More About Spider-Man: Spider-Man is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and writer-artist Steve Ditko, and first appeared in the anthology comic book Amazing Fantasy #15 (Aug. 1962) in the Silver Age of Comic Books. Lee and Ditko conceived the character as an orphan being raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben, and as a teenager, having to deal with the normal struggles of adolescence in addition to those of a costumed crime-fighter. Spider-Man's creators gave him super strength and agility, the ability to cling to most surfaces, shoot spider-webs using wrist-mounted devices of his own invention, which he calls "web-shooters", and react to danger quickly with his "spider-sense", enabling him to combat his foes.

Attention to Romita so long past due! I got to ask Stan Lee a question at his "Meet Stan for Breakfast" this year at the Dallas Comic Con. My question was simple .... "Out of all the artists you have worked with over all the years at Marvel, who was your "go to" guy? Who was the artist you went to in a pinch?" He didn't hesitate, he said "Oh that's easy, John Romita" and then went into detail of his praise and admiration of Mr Romita.

John Romita Sr. Not only an incredible artist, but the only person in the entire comicbook industry who nobody ever says anything negative about. Why? Because he was beloved by everyone, because he was nice to everybody, and because he was like a father for 3 or 4 generations of Marvel artists.

Really enjoyed this interview. John Romita Sr is simply one of the greatest action artists. Steve Ditko's action scenes in Spiderman, were very well choreographed and fun to look at but lacked impact. John Romita Sr action/fight scenes always had more raw, explosive power imho. Loved it when Gil Kane [another great action artist] did a few issues and Romita Jr did the inks. Kane & Romita Sr were an awesome team. When Romita Sr left the Spiderman for good,I found it was hard to stay interested in following the series anymore.

Romita always elevated artists when he inked their pencil work. The Gil Kane/John Romita team was PHENOMENAL. Kane had great detail and fantastic poses, but his style was rough and raw. Romita smoothed out those rough edges while keeping all that detail and style - and those great poses and angles! Jazzy Johnny was the best!

He's talking about using brushes vs. using pens... aren't brushes and pens what inkers use, whereas the initial drawings are done with pencils? I thought that during his initial run on TASM that Romita was the penciller and Mike Esposito (AKA: Mickey Demeo) was the inker.
@VistaRecordsBoard
@VistaRecordsBoard 6 лет назад
Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's talking about the inking process. Romita inked issues 42-47 himself. From what he said here Ditko used pens to ink his work, so Romita did the same for the first year when he inked those issues. He may have had Esposito do the same thing for the issues he inked. Romita's true style comes out when he uses his wide array of brushes for inking.
@soundslikeawinner9538
@soundslikeawinner9538 5 лет назад
MaximRecoil , mister romita was sometimes his own inker and he sure was on issues 108 and 109 that he mentions as his favorites because I'm reading it in the credits in the essential Amazing Spider-Man Vol 5, which is an affordable way to get those issues and Boodles and kaboodle's of others, and they are in beautiful black and white to to boot so you can appreciate his draughtsmanship and inking all the more

I think that John mixes stuff up a bit. Why would he use a pen instead of a brush in his first year on Spider-man to emulate Ditko, when he didn't even ink Spidey until much later in his career?
@marcschick8734
@marcschick8734 5 лет назад
Differences between Romita and Ditko? John was a run-of-he-mill artist.....like Don Heck, Sal Buscema, Lee Elias, Werner Roth, etc.....he could tell a story with pictures, which puts him so much ahead of many of the "artists'' doing comics nowadays.....but Ditko? He had so much style and I'll leave it at that.
@wk3820
@wk3820 5 лет назад
The difference is that the heart of the book under DItko (and he wrote as well despite the credits) was Peter's growing up process, and the superhero stuff was secondary. After Ditko, the book became truly a superhero series heart and soul.
@marcschick8734
@marcschick8734 5 лет назад
If you didn't know, from what I've heard, S-M's sales actually jumped when Romita took over. His was a more commercial style. But to say the Stan never 'wrote' it is inaccurate. Yes, Ditko probably plotted it, but there's no way Steve put the words in the balloons. Like FF and Kirby, it definitely wasn't a 50/50 relationship.. But SL not the "writer"? Nonsense........I guess Don Heck wrote Iron Man and the Avengers, Gene Colan wrote Daredevil?
@lyndoncmp5751
@lyndoncmp5751 4 года назад
Ditkos art was ugly eyesore and though quirky was quite simplistic. Romitas art was grand and beautiful.
@lyndoncmp5751
@lyndoncmp5751 4 года назад
@@wk3820 But Spider-Man truly became a soap opera only under Romita so Id say it was the other way around. Peter didn't really grow under Ditko. It was the same old stuff over and over. Under Romita Peter got close to Gwen, met MJ, moved in with Harry, the hang out meet ups, Flash went off to Vietnam etc.
