This is actually completely wrong. HGIG simply turns off the tone mapping of the TV, meaning any incoming signal above the display’s native brightness is hard clipped. The purpose of this is so that the output device, which has been calibrated to the TV, performs all of the tone mapping itself. Since you calibrated the PS5 in the TV’s default tone mapping setting and then switched to HGIG, you’re cutting out all information above ~750 nits. The reason the picture “pops” in this configuration is because much more of the signal is hitting and triggering the maximum brightness threshold of the display.
Hands down, calibrating the PS5 HDR on an LG C1 with DTM ‘off’, then enabling HGIG after, gives superior punch to the picture without blowing it out like DTM ‘on’ does. Plus eliminates the dullish image as found by HDR cal with HGIG on. I’ve tested this on Ratchet n Clank, GT7, Demon’s Souls, HFW and Astro’s. I’m stoked with the results.

For anyone wondering why with HGIG looks darker. It actually looks brighter than DTM on Highlights and slightly dimmer on Non-Highlights so if you are facing the sun for example, it gets a lot brighter than DTM, but if you are with the Sun on your back, DTM will look brighter
Thanks! I noticed this as well and I mentioned this in many videos . This is the "contrast" what I am talking about. Very bright and very dark at the same time. DTM is just bright but not really dark.
True .... with hgig the image is bright when it must be (so if you are in a forest at the Sunset it is different from a beach at noon), with the dtm it is always Very bright at most (even at night)
When I turn on the game mode, I have terribly strange colors compared to the standard mode. Most known in the Ghost of Tsushima. In addition, when I turn on HGiG, the image is very dark.
Love your clear explanation. I have DTM on because in fidelity mode (i want ray tracing) i use Tru Motion for dejudder of 30fps and turn off motion blur in game. It feels like 60fps now with only slight extra input latency. But now i see DTM is blowing out my white detail (cannot turn HGIG on outside of game mode) so I will have to try your recommendation and see what i will compromise! @@thebesttheworst2277 well Insomniac fixed this by putting in a 60fps+Ray Tracing mode! So no need to turn on Tru Motion at all now, it was only a workaround a year a go. I still use Tru Motion for some 30fps Switch games though. ie Kirby runs fantastic with De-Judder on 10, De-Blur on 0. Slight input lag but honestly don't even really notice it, can be situational per game though.
@@gamerdad36 Firstly thank for replying after I replied to your year old comment 👍👏 I actually just got Spider-Man remastered a few hours ago and I actually have it on as I type, I've gone for the Fidelity mode with all the bells and whistles at 40hz/120hz VRR mode. I'm normally someone who always wants at least 60fps but this is pretty smooth and worlds apart from the base 30fps Fidelity mode. I will need to check out 60fps/60fps RT at some point The reason I asked about your settings is I hate 30fps games on OLED due to the stutter/judder and just experimented with Trumotion for the first time the other day, after attempting to play Far Cry 4 in 30fps 😩 it was not pretty. I then had some good results with RDR2 on the XSX, the blur of grass or trees is crazy on 30fps in game mode but when I used Standard/Cinema and Smooth or User selection de judder at 6-10 it was night and day and felt like 60fps (albeit with the artifacts and input lag) I also had good results with Uncharted Lost Legacy (the 30fps PS plus one not remastered one) and it's not that detrimental for slower paced games, it's good to have options for sure and the TV has some and more.
@@thebesttheworst2277 yes it is very situational. I find de-judder on 10, de-blur on 0 - for stable 30fps games that are not 1st person or twitchy, in FILMMAKER MODE - the best option for it. Turn off all the other processing options and just turn Tru Motion on, for the least input latency impact. Also, Tru Motion won't work with VRR as it relies on a stable incoming frame rate to interpolate (ie 30 to 60), but I'm sure you know this already.
@@gamerdad36 Agree, very situational. Yes also with ALLM it won't - it sometimes shows you all the Trumotion options and when you select Cinematic or Natural, Smooth etc nothing happens but then as soon as ALLM or VRR is off you can see/feel the fake 60fps effect and start getting artefacts and so you know it's actually engaged then. I can definitely see me using it for certain games at 30fps with no 60fps options, I certainly found myself more immersed in something like RDR2 versus the 30fps.mode and you move the right stick/camera pan and the whole world just becomes a juddering smear, far more preferable with TM on It gets such a bad rep by most of the gaming community because of the downsides, but I'm glad I finally have it a chance after never having considered using it on any TV previously, partly because 30fps wasn't as bad on LCD/LED but OLED highlights it now.

As far as I know, to HGIG work the game has to be sending the tone mapping to the TV. Only a couple games do that, including the new Call of Duty. Spiderman Miles Morales is not one of them, unfortunately. That's what Vincent from HDTV Test says. The list of HGIH compatible games can be googled easily. Please, correct me if I'm wrong.
HGIG still has an effect even on those games. IN miles morales for example the highlights are way brighter cuz the ps5 is doing all the tonemapping and hardclips at rougly 800 nits if u configured ur HGIG settings and is sending that directly to ur oled instead of ur tv doing the tonemapping. IF ur Oled has to tonemap the incomming hdr signal that I would assume exceeds 4000 nits its gonna darken the higlights in favour of detail preservation, wich is my opinion is the wrong choice.
What do you think about ingame settings of Miles Morales? In my opinion, the game is a bit too contrasted and the black loose details. Should i change something in contrast or brightness menu in the game?i play it on my CX with HGIG properly calibrated.

You don’t have to adjust hdr on the console because some games do not use the consoles hdr calibration. Miles morales doesn’t use the consoles calibration.

I have a feeling I gave you this idea for the video with one of my comments :). Your HGig seems to have a bigger impact than mine was. I will try turning it off and then adjusting the hdr 1st. As far as the performance/fidelity modes, what I was trying to say was you can have all the visual effects and Ray tracing and still have the same performance of 60fps if you use cinema user and turn dejudder and deblurring 10/10 and black frame insertion on low. Yes, there might be a few mili seconds lag but in a game like this, lag is not as important as say competitive FPS. I could not tell a difference from performance and fidelity, In terms of fps, both smooth as a babys bottom. This is only in cinema user mode though. In Game mode though, fidelity mode is still a noticeably choppy 30fps. Anyways, great video! Enjoy the game! I finished last night and it is amazing! On to demons souls!
Diego I didn’t notice it much with miles but it does happen. I guess throughout whole game I was just constantly experimenting and switching back and forth. When it comes down to it, like amok said, its hard to notice all the extra effects when swinging through the city. So perhaps the steady 60fps is the best way to go. I guess we are always constantly striving to find what looks best and looking for better ways to play. Good problem to have though for us lucky enough to get our hands on a ps5 and CX. Yes and in general that's right but for this game I found it better to disable HGiG and turn it on afterwards....HDR is not always easy to set up what I found
gah! I always thought you were supposed to do the system level hdr calibration in the DTM mode you will be using! This and the AC video you said you get better results with doing the calibration with DTM off and then setting to HGIG...my head is spinning Great work as always

On my Samsung QD-OLED S95B I have to lower brightness from 50 to 45 in game settings, by default when you play The at night with brightness 50 it looks like it’s almost day 😅 40 I loose details in dark zone, but 50 too bright ! So I put 45 and I think it’s OK ! For contrast 10 by default is perfect 👌
What should i use in general dtm or hgig ? Hgig is dark especially at night i switch between hgig and dtm , but when i changed ps5 hdr settings with dtm it looked better so I would really appreciate if you help me do you use in general , the setting to put and don’t worry forget. Thanks. 🙏🏻
@@yousefstorm No stop lying. It depends on the tv and how bright a room is. In daytime hgig will be bad 90% of the time. Because HDR games are ment to be played in dark room.
Hi i have lg cx 55 inch and ps5 i make hgig on valhalla and its amazing but in this i see it littile bit orange and when i make dynamic contrast low its better than off can you please tell me what you make dynamic contrast? thanks
Before your Videos I didn't know what HGIG was ,I've always had Dynamic Tone Mapping on thank you i also play on Performance Mode ever 60fps is so much important for me more important than ray tracing
Hallo amok I tried your setting I'm afraid it's not good it's far frome accurate my eyes hurt with this setting the only way it feel better to my eyes when I set the hdr setting when the hgig is on
