How to Poo When You Have No Bowel Control After Spinal Cord Injury
Most people only think being paralyzed means you can't walk but in actual fact, there's so much more to it than that! One of the biggest issues almost every person with a spinal cord injury faces is loss of control of their bladder and bowels. This even affects most paraplegics who can walk! When you first have your spinal cord injury the realisation that you may poo yourself is pretty mortifying and it can really knock your confidence with going about your daily life, in case you have an accident in public. Luckily, with a bit of practice, it's quite possible to regain control of your bowels through routine and the use of suppositories, anal irrigation, manual evacuation and digital stimulation. In this video we discuss Craig's bowel routine and show you the different types of bowel management people may use to go for a poo after spinal cord injury. Thank you for covering this topic. My 25-year-old son is a recent L1-2 paraplegic (2 months). He’s still struggling with this, but he never wants to talk it. My 34 years old son is also a recent complete paraplegic with spinal t12 level at the level of the nipple. One's world changes, and it isn't just the one injured but also the family. Especially if the caretaker is the mother. For me sometimes it feels exhausting, but I would not change that for the world unless he is able to walk again. For that we have hope, and I do what I can to keep his spirit up. I am very grateful to have him and thank God every day. When he first came home it was difficult to discern his bowel movements b c he was not eating and lose nearly 40 pounds. So, when he did start to eat it was somewhat unmanageable. I didn't know whether it was going to be soft, loose, or watery, or how often. We finally have it to where it is much more manageable.

Thank you for not making my side affects from spinal injury an “only me” syndrome. I broke my back 13 years ago and I have walked with a cane until now. I’ve been slowly getting worse, an increase in the constant pain and les mobility. Something happened a couple months ago in my sleep and I’m degenerating quicker. I can only walk short distance and I’m falling a lot more. My doctor wanted me in a wheelchair a long time ago and I finally accepted his prescription for wheelchairs. I’m stubborn. I’ve had three chairs, carrier behind the car and ramps to get into the SUV as well as other helpful items donated by Veterans Mobility Corp. I’ve already received my manual chair (All of my chairs are powered. I call my manual one “powered by armstrong “), I will receive the smaller electric (for work, home, stores etc.) and a large offroad monster tomorrow or the next day. I haven’t watched your video on urinating. Looks like I’m going to be binge watching. I can no longer use the last part of my bowels. If my poo is long enough, gravity will pull all of it out. If it breaks off or is smaller, I can feel poo just inside the sphincter and I have to manually remove it. Never pleasant. However, better than an accident later. I can feel the end of my penis and the bladder sometimes (difficult to explain) which means by the time I feel that I have to pee, I had better be really close or it’s too late. I do carry extra skivvy shorts with me. I will try to keep my comments shorter in the future.

Thank you so much for talking about this ; I am slowly losing my movement; my cerebellum is shrinking; it's now almost 2 years since I discovered this about myself and have never considered this but have to recognise its getting harder - I don't know how to prepare it's different from having been in an accident and going through rehab learning these things ; It help me alot to be able to prepare; even if just mentally even though I don't know how it can work or will work ; it's a bit scary and this was empowering to watch; thank. Great video. Ive been a quad for 29 years and this is the first time I've heard of this method. I use small enemas every other day now that work pretty well except most times i do feel like there is more high up that i didn't manage to pass. Its probably the easiest and most comfortable method that works well but, like you, i tried alot of different methods before this. But i will be looking into the method you use very soon. And about me "feeling" like i have more that didn't pass. I am a C5 incomplete quadriplegic. For those that dont know...that means i broke the 5th cervical (my neck) but it only damaged my spinal cord instead of severing it in two. And depending on how bad you damage it you can have different levels of paralysis. Mine is pretty bad but not near as bad as it could be. I got sensation back to some degree over my entire body and some motor function but still wheelchair bound with paralysis in all the normal places in slighy varying degrees. Plus feeling hot and cold temperatures are feeling sharp and dull pokes are decreased or are hyper sensitive. Such a great video. Thanks for the information and education.

Craig hit the nail on the head when he said some people with spinal cord injuries can walk, but struggle with bladder and bowel control. That was me a while back, I am a C4 incomplete, and did get a lot of sensation and movement back (including walking well for a few years and not so well another few years...and now in a chair unable to), but the one thing I always struggled with is UTI's & bladder management (making it to the bathroom on time) and bowels (although often loose and embarrassing accidents). I actually can still push...I thought people with spinal cord injuries couldn't...so for years, I thought 'maybe I was never injured and it was all in my imagination' and actually got neck X-Rays so I could kind of come back to reality? Weird, eh? Maybe that was part of the sensation I got back as an incomplete? I have a dislocated vertebrate and needed the annual X-Rays and occasional MRI to make sure it didn't shift the wrong way. Now, I can't always tell when I have to go though...hence the accidents. WOW! Great demonstration guys...great! Thank you very much. I often wondered and even though people explained, I could not really picture it. Not everyone goes to the extent of explaining that you do.

Great vlog. I'm 12+ years as a T5 para. Enjoyed your straight faces while discussing bowel management. If you ever make it to Australia (who knows in this weird world), stop by. Because wheelies need to spend sooo long in toilets, its a shame the windows are too high and mirrors are generally opposite the loo (who wants to look at themselves on the shitter). Look after your shoulders... mine are stuffed!

Haha thanks, think all taboo of talking about bodily functions goes out the window when you have a SCI. We were supposed to visit Australia last August but that obviously didn't matter, not much hope for this year but we're hoping it might happen next year. Haha yeah looking at yourself on the loo isn't ideal 😂 glad none of the mirrors in our house are in such a position but is does seem to be a thing when we go away!

If anyone walking past wants to see a 58-year-old para sitting on a commode doing his ablutions, its their nightmare, not mine :-) Construction is being filmed by Grand Designs Australia, so you might see it on the TV.

Thank you so much for these videos; I am so glad I found them. My dear husband recently suffered a SCI and will be coming home from rehab soon. My daughter and I will assist him. I understand the procedures for poo, but how can I wipe him? Currently, he is totally immobile and cannot lift himself, we will do so with a Hoya lift. Is wearing a diaper the best option for him now, and my cleaning him. I will do anything I can to help him, I love him so. Any thoughts?

Hi Craig. I have spina bifida and have a neurogenic bowel and bladder im not in a wheelchair but i have problems walking. I use intermittent catheters to empty my bladder and I use macrogol laxative daily. I've tried suppositories and digital stimulation and it doesnt work for me. I don't know if you've tried it but I thought I'd recommend it to you I can't live without it.

I have a question; do you sit while doing this ? Can I lay ? I have balance problems from a shrinking cerebellum and it would be very difficult to sit while doing this and balancing to do the digital/ chemical stimulation - is there no pushing involved? All this is very new to me.

I am not crippled but I do have problems with pooping to so I do that procedure to what you're talking about with you're finger and sometimes I do water irrigation to. It also makes me feel so much cleaner to. I have diareah to. I try to be careful about what I eat with my stomach issues on my vacations. But good instructional video about how you poop I so understand you're part of you're life because I live it to with my stomach issues. I always clean up my bathroom with bleach when I am done to.

Problem i have us my bowel is areflexive and so stimulation just does nothing. Suppositories included . Ive bought persireen but haven't started. Im nervous. Ps completel para L1 L2. My question is, do You deflate the balloon as down as water in or do you u deflate after a while ? I never was regular even before this. Now zero or partial empty but usually accidenrsl

I tend to deflate as soon as I've finished pumping the water in (I add a whole bag of water). Worth trying both to see what works best for you. It can take some time for your body to get used to it, but we hope it works out for you!

Sorry, this is not something that I've ever had to deal with, since I can't feel at all. I do occasionally have accidents but they are rare so I just wear normal clothes and deal with it if/when it happens! Hope it works out for you 👍

How interesting! the usual bowel program is taking medicine, so you can poop the next day but its very invasive and after some time it doesnt work anymore. many complained for sitting on the toilett for a long time. the water thing, we call it thai method here, its really effective but expensive and invasive kind of. some fun things. i drink beer and the next day I have a poo day (or apple juice, sauerkraut, ....) it also helps with bladder infections and pain.^^

I always thought that people that are paralysed would have a stoma bag.. as this is easy to empty & you wouldn't have to worry when your bowels decide to move without a person's control..

I hate hate hate using my irrigation system. Meant to use it twice a day but I never do! I mostly use it when I have a blockage. Mine is the qufora one. I personally prefer manual evacuation, but I also hate that term! Disabled toilet life. lol

Hadnt heard of qufora until the other day but I thought it looked alright. What do you hate about it/irrigation? I way prefer irrigation to manual evacuation (know what you mean about that term), but that is partly due to only having to do it every other day, not I'd like it as much if I had to do it twice a day. But I do also like it because it's much more reliable for me than manual evac, I just wouldn't feel confident going out and about if I'd only done manual evac

@@PARALIFE I am literally crying. My boyfriend is a recovering quadriplegic and the bowel stuff...is a very difficult subject between us. Sadly we live in the US where his government insurance is the barest available. I hope I can find the system you are using here. He is suffering so bad, as he hasn't gotten on the regimented schedule yet (it's been a year). Every 4 days I worry I am going to have to call an ambulance. Thank you for doing such a great job at explaining this subject.

I've never thought about it, and never tried taking probiotics after doing it. I assume it doesn't clear high enough to makes much difference but I don't know for sure.

How did you know how munch water to use? Or do you just used the full bag?

It took a little bit of trial and error, start small and work your way up. I now use a whole bag, but I know some people who use less

@@PARALIFE thanks. Tried it and got some good results. But how long do you keep the catheter in, after you pumped the water, before you deflate and remove it? I think i removed it too early and felt like all the water just came rushing out without doing the job properly. Will experiment a bit more ;) thanks for sharing this. Would have never tried this method if it wasn't for your video. My routine takes a lot of time, twice a day, so this will be a game changer if i get it right ;)

Because I only need to do my bowel routine every 2 days, I just make sure to poop before I leave the house in the morning (so never have to go in public). It's the same if we are away from home, I just go to the toilet before I leave the house. The only difference is I have to transfer onto the toilet to do my bowel care since I won't have my shower chair with me.

Atleast you can poop 💩 There is alot of people that nothing will work on, and personell have to do it for them, I know.. because I have to do it when I'm at work..
