How I spin: English Woolen
About the breed: from the Irish Rare Breed Society
"Cladoir Sheep these are a small white face breed of sheep which were once common in South Connemara. They were kept mainly for their wool which was very fine and suitable for spinning and weaving. It was generally white but could be coloured. They are an unimproved breed with a narrow shoulder and generally a white narrow face... They got their name as they spent much of the time grazing on the seashore. Cladoir is an Irish word which means shore dwelling. They eat seaweed but most breeds sheep will eat seaweed if they spend much time on the seashore."
Technically extinct but effort are underway to regenerate the breed.

Lovely video, Lisa! The yarn looks so cozy ❤ I’m so very interested to see how this breed progresses through the years as they bring back the finer qualities of the wool. It’s exciting to be able to experience the changes that will occur - it’s like a in-depth breed study ‘from the ground up’! The next shearing I think Suzanna, or another of us who hand spin, might be there to make sure the fleeces don’t get all jumbled like they did last time. I’ve no idea where the bit I got came from, it was just a big piece in a bag, lol. But the sheep farmers are learning now, I think- I hope! It’s been so long since Irish wool was valued & not just shipped to China for insulation, or even just left to rot because it was without a market at all 😩 It is so heartening to see more & more hand-spinners learning to spin, and becoming interested in fleece & breeds! And more knitters too! Your channel is fantastic for this!! ✨💖💖✨

I enjoy your videos. I learn so much and love watching you spin wool from carding to skein. I have purchased two spindles from Vermont and ordered wool on Etsy. I know it takes time to learn a new craft so I plan to remember that the process is just as important as becoming proficient. Thank you so much for sharing your joy of everything fiber.

I checked several time on Saturday to see new vlog… and today (Sunday) Lisa surprised me with quite unusual post , than you Lisa, if it wasn’t for your eye opening posts, I would still think simplistically: wool comes from sheep, mohair from goats, alpaca from alpaca … you showed the whole universe of sheep, uncountable number of sheep breeds! I wonder what will happen to goat study (I know only 3 kinds :-) Thank you for your work!

Ah the idea of unchanged, original breed, I read about Scottish conservation farm and their farms. Here we want to improve and put everything on steroids. In fact we only need little to enjoy life. I never heard of Cladoir breed. And probably very many more …

Hi Lisa from Edmonton, Alberta Canada!!👋 I’m so excited to have found you and your great podcasts! I’m a retired nurse with lots teacher friends so I appreciate so much your teaching content and sharing from books etc. If you were a close by neighbor, oh boy would it be so great but I’m learning alot from you as it is with your podcasts🤗 A great lady you are - a really good way to start retirement with this classroom of on-liners like me learning to card, spindle spin and wheel spin, and all about the beautiful varied breeds of sheep. I’m having a fabulous time of it - I’ve ordered my first couple of lightweight spindles from Vermont spindles. And will try my hand at it with patience and lots repetition - fingers crossed😊 Kelli

I've been dreaming of just such a wool, spun yarn, for lace making! It is beautiful- thank you for bringing this to us. Will any of this be available to many of us? Is there another wool that you might recommend in its place, if it's unavailable? Lovely. Thank you Edit: your comment respnse says it's more a durable yarn, but it looks very light and airy.

I’m still in the watching stages of spinning and love watching your podcast. My tool of time of learning is the spindle. Would you show us how to ply using a spindle. I watched you use the wool hackle and this answered the question of how I would blend my roving. Thank you for that! But without a spinning wheel, can I use my spindle to ply my yarns together? I’m just across the Canadian boarder and really enjoy spending time with you. You are so natural when you spin. I admire the love you have for your craft.
@SoulfulSpinning
@SoulfulSpinning Год назад
You can ply on a spindle certainly. Try winding 2 sets of singles into a ball, then attach the “twin “ singles to your spindle. Start spinning in the opposite direction that you spun your singles. I usually spin my singles clockwise (Z) and ply counterclockwise (S). It helps if you have a bigger spindle for plying as you’ll have more yarn to fill. Check out the chapter I have on making a plying ball here in this video. Winter Breed Study No. 7| Finnsheep | Knitting| Spinning | Plying from Spindles ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aW0zimQKSQg.html Good luck and let me know how it goes for you!

So what was it like spinning the Irish wool ?? Thanks Lisa !!
@SoulfulSpinning
@SoulfulSpinning Год назад
I’ll talk about it more on my next sit down, but I will say it reminded me of the hill and down like breeds, Welsh mountain or Clun Forest. It definitely had some kemp fibers. It’s a crunchy wool for sure, not next to skin but would be lovely in a woven project or used for sturdy outerwear. Of course this is just a sample. I don’t know what part of the sheep it came from so it may be variable. It carded beautifully though. Real woolly wool! 💕

What's your secret for washing woollen spun yarn without the strands sticking together?
@SoulfulSpinning
@SoulfulSpinning Год назад
I wash in warm water with Eucalan for about 20 minutes, then I roll in a towel. I give the hank about 4 good snaps with my hands in the loop, rotating the hank after each. For this one I did thwack on my laundry room floor a few times, then hung to dry with no weight. As it’s drying a spread out the yarn every now and then as it’s drying. The finished yarn does tend to stick together, a lot like Velcro, but it separate easily.

I expected another video like the past 13...or learning about drop spindles...or LEARNING something...so this video was a let-down for me. Your ability as a spinning and knitting educator is excellent. That's what you excel at!!! I would vastly prefer videos less often so long as they had some substance than something like this bit of "fluff"--pun intended. This was the spinning equivalent of watching paint dry. The only positive thing I can say about it is at least it was relatively short. No more like this, please.

Wow - that's a bit rude. The amount of time and energy it takes for her to film and edit alone is a lot. If you have nothing nice to say don't say it. She owes you nothing and quite frankly probably doesn't make much money if any money off of RU-vid. Learning can happen if you actually pay attention - she was using a long draw technique with a woolen prep. It was spun using a low ratio - I'm thinking faster flyer on lendrum. I appreciated this video alot as I need to improve my long draw. From the bottom of my heart - thank you ❤

@@sewobsessedmama8851 I DID say several positive things...but perhaps you are unable to READ them. She is an EXCELLENT teacher!!! However...she needs feedback when her viewership drops. I seriously don't think I'm the only one...but I'm the only one with courage to speak up! However...I already know how to spin, so I don't need you to tell me how to spin...including the types of draw...nor do I want to watch someone else spin...or knit, unless they are teaching me a new technique.
