Megalosauroidea is a major theropod group that originated Megalosaurs during the Jurassic Period and the Spinosaurus family, later in the Cretaceous. They lived mostly in the northern hemisphere.

For whatever reason a lot of the Megalosauroids are very obscure, so I'm glad to see a lot them showcased in a video along side the iconic ones like Spinosaurus, Megalosaurus and Baryonyx, and not only that but all of them are amazingly portrait with beautiful art. But seriously Piatnitzkysaurids might be the most generally unknown family of carnivores theropods.
@Andrey.Ivanov
@Andrey.Ivanov 2 года назад
@bloodes Herrerasaurids (if they are in fact theropods) atleast have one popular member - Herrerasaurus. Dilophosauridae is a questionable family. Presently I'm mostly seeing Dilophosaurus being presented as simply basal Neotheropoda. But even if it was a real family Dilophosaurus is still very popular thanks to Jurassic Park. The problem is that people often have little to no idea where it goes on the theropod family tree. Some just seem to assume that it must be related to Cryolophosaurus and Monolophosaurus (which is likely true about the former but not for the latter) based on their names or the fact that they all have some kind of crest. Coeluridae is also questionable but atleast Ornitholestes is relatively popular. So I still stand by what I said about Piatnitzkysauridae being the carnivourous theropod family that is the most unknown by people in general. It has only 3 members currently and non of them are popular, with them being Piatnitzkysaurus, Marshosaurus and Condorraptor. I haven't seen anything about questioning its family status so it should be a proper clade.
@Andrey.Ivanov
@Andrey.Ivanov 2 года назад
@bloodes Just to clarify we are talking about unknown not underrated because to me the most underrated carnivorous theropods are the Megaraptorans which don't get a 1/10 of the representation they deserve.
@Andrey.Ivanov
@Andrey.Ivanov 2 года назад
@bloodes Piatnitzkysauridae is usually placed as a family within Megalosauroidea superfamily. I've never seen them included with Megalosauridae. The analysis that came along with the description of Asfaltovenator even put them within Allosauroidea, but that's not universally accepted as this paper also suggests that Megalosauroidea as we usually define it might be a paraphyletic group

Lips on the spinosaurus is a great detail. Like hippos; just because an animal is subaquatic doesn't mean it won't have lips. Looking at a hippos skull it's hard to imagine they have lips but they do.
@Primevaln1
@Primevaln1 2 года назад
But is it biologically possible for Spinosaurids not to have lips or to have some of their teeth showing and the rest hidden? I mean, there's no conclusive or unquestionable evidence that they did have them, is just that they were more likely to have them. But could a lipless Spinosaurid be biologically possible?
@trvth1s
@trvth1s 2 года назад
@@Primevaln1 you're right and a lipless spinosaurus is possible. Crocodiles being lipless is a specialization, like lizards and amphibians, the ancestors of crocodiles had lips. But crocodiles are highly specialized in their niche, spinosaurus weren't subaquatic for nearly as much as crocs. I'd wager on spinosaurus eventually inevitably loosing its lips, but unfortunately spinosaurus wasn't occupying its niche for nearly as long as the crocodilians. Early crocodilomorphs had lips, there was one, i forget the species name, but it even had clear protruding cheek bones. Crocodile liplessness is a very specialized characteristic. Unfortunately it has also hindered many from trying to go back to a terrestrial lifestyle, and believe me many have tried including the most recent quinkana.
@nutyyyy
@nutyyyy 2 года назад
@@trvth1s Neither birds or crocodiles possess lips and there's no evidence of them in Dinosaurs so the idea that it's a definitive feature is very much just a modern paleoart meme. Its not impossible but it reeks of feathered Tyrannosaurus vibes.
@trvth1s
@trvth1s 2 года назад
@@nutyyyy we have fossilized tyranosaurid protofeather, most notably the giant yutyrannus. Birds don't have teeth. Crocodiles are subaquatic. There are no exceptions of toothed terrestrial amniote lacking lips in any living species (amphibian, reptilian and mammalian). There is a biological purpose for lips in toothed terrestrial fauna. Assuming that extinct dinosaurs are the exception is....amateur and not scientific. FYI we do have fossil evidence of ornithischians having cheeks. Cheeks are a specialized morphology of lips.
@xevious1538
@xevious1538 2 года назад
@@nutyyyy Dinosaurs likely had lips, literally every tetrapod I can think of has lips covering most of their teeth. Crocodiles are really the only exception. Lips are incredibly advantageous, as they protect your teeth and mouth from damage or drying out. I don't know why you are bringing up bird beaks, since beaks don't need lips since they are already closed structures and don't have teeth to protect. There is every reason for beakless dinosaurs to have lips.
