SPL Subwoofer Box Design - or lack thereof

This is my opinion when designing boxes for SPL subwoofers. Don't take it too seriously. I'm sure there are similar speakers to this one where you can do a lot to make your box sound better, but most of these high moving mass and low Vas speakers don't give you much option when designing an enclosure for them.

This is common sense to anyone who has experience with car audio you could run 4 or more and gain more output and bandwidth because the box is bigger but then again why not just run a 12 or 10 high power 8s are verry peaky but high power subs in general are peaky the more efficient a subwoofer is at making output the less bandwidth you have but you can go up in cone area and Gain some output without having such a peaky setup there are ways to get loud and flat but you can only cheat the system but so much bigger subs with the right specs in the right box can get louder with a flatter response
@AudioJudgement
@AudioJudgement 2 года назад
Agreed. Larger subs suffer less from this issue.

But that is where my problem kind of comes into play. Kicker L7 with radiators and a port to spl in a truck. No body seems to talk about ones they've done or very few videos.

Your videos are always amazing !!!! Any video on how to do EQ boost in sealed and ported subs, pros and cons, limitations of EQ boost will be great topic. Some sealed subs can go to single digit frequencies in room for home theater. Ofcourse the drivers need to be large and large Xmax and high power handling. So any knowledge in this subject is great. Not many youtubers cover this topic 😀😀

This was a fun watch. I sure love car audio. From the Hair tricks to the SQ. Glad they gave you TS specs. Most value or budget woofers in car audio don't have them, OR.. They are all wrong.

Excellent video. Also, changing box volume increases port velocity. The port might need extra area and in turn extra length. I use a 10% variant “rule of thumb” so yes there is wiggle room when designing an enclosure. However, I also design SPL enclosures and do not allow for wiggle room if at all possible. Port compression due to small port area can result in huge loss of dB.

Sorry to dig up an old video but what WinISD settings did you settle on for the final design? I have this exact subwoofer and would love to compare it to what I did!

I noticed someone asking if this design is suitable for home use. What if live in my car? A beautifully preserved 2005 renault clio symbol with LPG coversion. Could the LPG vapors ignite from such a powerfull speaker?
@AudioJudgement
@AudioJudgement 2 года назад
Yes, the fire hazard is real. Since the car is also used as a home, the human natural odors mixed with the LPG vapors can easily catch fire and serious property damage may occur. I strongly advise in avoiding such subwoofers and instead use a small portable speaker placed on the dashboard, next to the dog with the bobbing head.

Just make boxes with a 80hz and 40hz peaks and everybody will be super happy
@JoshM7
@JoshM7 2 года назад
I have a Ultimax 10 tuned to 19Hz for my car. I could have a response that looks similar to this sub as I used passive radiators so adjusting the tuning is easy. My peak would be around 33Hz in my case. Whenever I did it, it was fun for maybe 30 minutes before I wanted to go back to my lower tuning which offered a more natural to the ear response. Because peaky bass is only fun for the handful of songs that have the same frequency. And that gets boring fast to me. I don't use a bass knob and I'm sure that's weird to most car audio people. I like to set it with my UMIK and just enjoy it that way. Thanks for the video!
@johnviera3884
@johnviera3884 2 года назад
How do you enjoy any music without a bass knob? Even if you are a master tuner and it sounds perfect on Radiohead from 2001. It won’t have enough bass for The Police from 1986 and it will have too much bass for Suicide Boys 2021.
@JoshM7
@JoshM7 2 года назад
@@johnviera3884 that sounds like your preference just changes with the music. Some songs you want louder or quieter bass. I like to use measurement equipment and set my levels to be accurate and musical. Not exactly set flat, more like a human ear response it gets louder the lower in frequency it plays. I'm tuned to 19Hz and I'm flat to just about 16Hz. I can play just about any song and enjoy it just as much as the next song. Because there's no overly loud or too quiet with my system set just right. If something is overly loud or quiet it's the song and how it was mastered or could be my preference and want the bass louder or something. Just my view on it. I enjoy my system as is. I don't care if others don't.
@johnviera3884
@johnviera3884 2 года назад
@@JoshM7 I’m conflicted. I enjoyed preserving the integrity of the master recording but did they master It that way only because they didn’t have the capability to exploit the low end at that time? If you notice a lot of prestigious mastering engineers definitely are exploiting the low end now versus the stuff they did 20 years ago. To me The Police sounds better with a little more thump
@JoshM7
@JoshM7 2 года назад
@@johnviera3884 I used to want my system to be flat and try to preserve what I thought would be best for artists so I hear it closer to how they wanted it to sound like. But after I got a UMIK-1 I found out I hate flat. So I just tune my system to the way I like it and enjoy all my music.

I have four Ampere Audio rve-2.5 8s in a 2.8ft3 tuned to 34hz. A budget spl subwoofer. 800w rms with 2.5 inch voice coil. They play music well. .7 to .75 cubic feet. It plays from 28 hz to 42hz with a 2.4 db raise at 38-40 hz. Spl woofers can play in musical designed enclosure. Next is a series tuned 6th order. 2.8ft3 tuned to 26.25 hz and 5.7ft3 tuned to 52.5 hz in my cargo area of my hatchback.

Can u tell me the actual measurements of this sub please ??
@AudioJudgement
@AudioJudgement Год назад
Front / Back : 300 x 700 x 18 mm (3 pieces because of double baffle). Front panel covers the port and you will need a router to cut the port hole with a flush trim bit after the box is done. Top / Bottom : 246 x 700 x 18 mm (2 pieces) Sides : 246 x 264 x 18 mm (2 pieces) Port 1st panel: 196 x 264 x 18 mm (1 pieces) Port 2nd panel: 201 x 264 x 18 mm (1 pieces) Brace: 178 x 264 x 18 mm (1 piece). Just make large hole (circular or rectangular) in this panel to make the brace. Place the brace between the front panel and the 2nd port panel.

What T/S parameters (e.g., 1) which ones, and 2) around which values or ratios) does one look for when a (musically) acurate speaker is desired?
@AudioJudgement
@AudioJudgement 2 года назад
Mms is a good indicator. Large moving mass will make it harder to control the cone movement and transient response will suffer. Of course Mms is not everything, but usually it can give some information. Of course, the number is proportional to the size of the speaker, so to give you an example for a 12" subwoofer, Mms of 100-200g would probably be a musical subwoofer, transparent sounding and good transient response. Probably not have the punch people would hope for. If Mms is 300-400g, then it's most likely for high pressure applications.
@devadroid5269
@devadroid5269 2 года назад
@@AudioJudgement Thanks! That gives me a good parameter to focus on when comparing similar options. I've been wanting to build something for the longest time, hopefully I can soon. :)
