They were such a Great Neo Psychedelic Band. Sorely Missed Now. We have so much crappy music being played these days that it's a relief to return to these Golden Oldies from the 80's. Thank You Split Enz.😊👍
I feel sorry for those that have never heard this or any genius Enz songs , it was these guys that started me on my bass playing journey and I’m still in awe of these guys . One word .. sublime
I always adored Split Enz and cannot understand why more people don't; they were way ahead of their time. I see their style in so many other bands now. Even Eddie Vedder fell in love with their song "Take a walk Again". Anyway they will always remind me of my youth where I did not fit in but still felt cool lol.
Sadly we are a small select group of music enthusiests who are aware of the existence of song. Could be a perfect fit for future film set around that time period.
I bought True Colours in 1981, after hearing "I Got You". I still love that track, but my favourites are Poor Boy +Nobody Takes Me Seriously Anyway. I wasn't so in to Crowded House, but Split Enz were excellent
Poor Boy = top song! I used to play it all the time as an 18 year old driving to high school at top volume on the old cassette player ... gives me goosebumps still!
The 80s! 16 and starting to find out what this love thing was all about! The chase! The breakups! The feeling i cant live without her😊 these songs were a big part of my life growing into an adult! I got you! Message to my girl etc Aussie/NZ music stood alone in the world! Thank you Split Enz still making my heart a little warmer❤
He had some technical problems at Caloundra but he worked through them and it was a great show - he's still got that off-kilter stage personality and, of course, enough great songs to have you coming away from the show going "huh, he didn't play xxxxx" but not feeling bad about it.
Yeah they were better than the Beatles so no surprise there -Beatles appropriated lesser known stuff and repackaged it as their own -at least spit enz were original
I was very young back in the late 70s - early 80s. I remember seeing Split Enz's video clips on tv and guys dressed in weird suits & make up and thought "What's all this about ?". As I've grown older I've begun to appreciate their music much more.
I don't get it. Split Enz were weird and quirky presumably for artistic purposes. Were they hiding themselves behind an odd persona? Were they doing it for attention? Were they shy and being fake about why they really were? Why was Crowded House so bland when Split Enz was so 'out there'? Anyone have any answers?
Love the Enz.......not to mention the application of imagination by Eddie Rayner....great great player and unsurpassed arranger......and how did he draw from the well of sounds to conjure the unique swirling thingy he had going on......thank you to all the Enz, but particularly you Mr Rayner
Me too, My fav Split enz song ever, I had a 120 Wat per channel stereo in those days, I used to play this full blast, you could hardly stand up in the room it was so loud and if you had drank too much it would make you sick, very clear but very loud, it made the hole house dance.
What an amazing song!!! God I had almost forgotten how much I love it!!! Been too many years since hearing this! I'm in my mid 40's and if it wasn't for my 12 year older brother, I probably wouldn't have known of this band. When he brought home this album back in the day, he played it and played it and my sisters and I fell in love with these guys! I can't stop listening this this song! Brings me way back to my early childhood.
Memories! I recall seeing Enz in 1975 at the Tottenham Hotel in Melbourne, Australia where they were the main act supported by up-and-coming band, AC/DC .....
AC/DC played Marana Hall Hurstville in 1975, I went with my brother, entry was $2, we walked in from the side door, no charge watched them for 20 minutes, Angus jumped off the 6 foot speakers and nearly hit me and my brother with his guitar. I decided it was time to exit the place. They had only been around for a year or so. MEMORIES in the corner of my heart................
The chord progression and the down beat was not the traditional sound of the times. So many did not 'hear' the creative sound they had. My father was a classic rock/blue style fan. And I do love that style as well. But he couldn't 'hear' the same sound(s) that I did of these masters of the new wave. I tried to teach my sons the understanding of chords working together and harmony (even off set harmony) and the both of them say as for today's music it doesn't have anything that compares to previous genres I have introduced them to. I appreciate RU-vid for allowing me to hear and experience a piece of years gone by.!.!. ( this is not a plug for RU-vid........However.......
SPLIT ENZ XXXX This Band Brings so much Nostalgia, from the 70s to 80s. I Find myself Listening to them quite often, X Brilliant Musik, One Step Ahead, " What more Can Be Said, The Rest is History. So. SAD. XXX Ice-Maiden. Thankyou X
Mate...FFS !! Underrated you say ??!! Get real ...these guys were , and still are enormous !! NEVER underrated !!! If saying that was an attempt to get likes , it failed . Sorry not sorry !!
If anyone recalls a young girl with long blonde hair walking down the street with her beatbox playing this song on repeat - that was yours truly lol I was a bit of a weirdo but hey, i knew a good song when i heard one : )
This to me was the best record done in this year that was my world turned upside down and I found my head has been stuck in crap for the last 34 years .
I’ve heard a few spiltz enz cover bands, but they won’t play “poor boy”, I suspect because no one can replicate Eddie Rayner’s brilliance on the keyboard. Still love this song, all these decades later. I saw crowded house, when they did the secret tour of Australia, 1986? 1987? trying out their material, to find out if loyal spiltz enz fans, would like the new band, the new songs, - give them a chance. It was in a small adelaide nightclub, only 300 capacity, just in case it all turned pearshaped I guess. I couldn’t work out why it was in such a small space at the time, but at least we could all see the musicians. Brilliant. It was all the songs that ended up on the very first crowded house album. Eddie Rayner was there too.
Excellent song, unfortunately I forgot about it until I heard it on the radio, now I've downloaded it I must have listened to the song 50 time's or more ☺️
I know this album has been remastered, but it must have been a boring job, because it was so well-engineered at the time. Honestly, it was the best-sounding NZ album for years. Blew me away when I first heard it. (Probably recorded/mixed in Oz, but still great for the time.)
Their early songs were recorded when they were in the UK in 1976. Partly financed By a NZ Arts Council grant. And later albums were recorded in Aust. But to clear things up a little. Their recording contract was with Polydor records NZ. Which was a subsidiary of Polydor records UK / Europe. It wasn't that people couldn't record and mix in NZ. EMI NZ had a new modern studio in Lower Hutt (Wellington area), as did the NZBC at Avalon Lower Hutt. And there was, Marmalade Studios in Wellington City, Stebbings in Auckland etc. The point about recording in Aust was....You qualified for Australian broadcasting quotas. NZ never had quotas. And at the time, in early 1979. Split Enz, in association with Polydor, were working with Mushroom records in Aust, to break into the Aust market. So there was an incentive to record in Aust. The Albums were released by Polydor records in NZ and Mushroom records in Aust. Later on, the recording thing didn't matter. Because under the Aus NZ trade agreements. NZ recordings, were included in Aust quotas. Anyway, it is slightly ironic, given that one of the top producers in Aust at the time, was NZr Peter Dawkins.
1980 is one of the most futuristic years in our history. This band Split Enz & Mi-Sex and hundreds of others that were caught in the New Wave net had this cosmic and far out sound. The late 70's and early 80's could be the pinnacle of Western culture. Then Devo's De-Evolution started to become evidentiary. The music today is very ordinary and sometimes horrible and diisgusting and that is the so called Rock bands, they are trying too hard instead of being organic, real and sincere. In the late 70's and early 80's I was out at venues seeing as many Bands as I could, 5/6 nights a week. Spent way too much money enjoying my youth.. I saw Mi-Sex many times, yet the gig that stands out in my mind is one at The Govenor's Pleasure which was in Dickson St The Rocks, Sydney. I can tell you that they are not forgotten, obscure or unknown in a lot of people's minds and hearts. They are much loved. One of New Zealand's finest. Great front man in Steve Gilpin. RIP mate
With all the great success this Band Had, I'd have to say this Tuuuune really stood out!! kinda special, but I always liked Tim's lyrical prowess . . . . . Fantastic Band!! 💗🍻🍻✌😄
Saw Split Enz do their first show in Sydney at the Bondi Lifesaver , myself and the rest of the room just stood there , completely stunned by them.. they were truely Amazing . This was the first of many shows by Split Enz that I attended ..
Would've loved to of seen split enz tour with reo speewagon back in the middle 80s, when they were both at there very peak,, two of the greatest, bands ever of that 80s era,, without a shadow of a doubt 😁😁👍👍John Martin Sydney Australia 🌏
