Making a bow staves from a red oak log.
Here are a few tips from me on this topic:
- firstly, remember about safety, use protective googles and be careful with tools
- start split from thinner end or use natural cracks appearing on ends of the log
- splitting follow natural wood grain
- process the wood into bow staves as soon as possible to get the best quality material possible
- debark staves and seal their backs and ends to prevent checking
Thanks for watching guys!

Water thinned wood glue will seal as well. Even a few coats of cheap crappy paint would seal.

Can you use one of the small pieces of wood that you used to build the stave bench to make a bow or would it be too small to make a good bow?
@DreamcraftBows
@DreamcraftBows Год назад
If these were right species - sure, they could be used :)

@@DreamcraftBows awesome! I have bodark trees around my house and I’m pretty sure they are good for bowmaking. I’m Cherokee and I plan to make a badass traditional bow to use to kill my first deer.. I’m excited 😅

how long will we wait after all this process?

Depending on drying conditions even from a few weeks to over a year
@sheogoraththedaedricprince9675
I know nothing about bows. I was wondering if horn and bamboo could be combined to make a fast bow. Would wood be better than bamboo? Also should one of these be better as backing or could sinew be added. Again I know next to nothing about such subjects.
@DreamcraftBows
@DreamcraftBows Год назад
Sure horn, wood and sinew can be combined (and historically they have been). Asiatic style horsebows were being made that way

What would you say is the minimum diameter for a log?
@DreamcraftBows
@DreamcraftBows Год назад
For splitting I'd say minimum would be 4"
