I will tell a bit about Kharkiv, its transport and the reasons why railways in Ukraine are so bad Kharkiv is Ukraine's 2nd largest city and one of the closest to the Russian border. Overall the city is alright, also given to the fact that the city hosted the 2012 Eurocup. I've been there many times and i can tell you that it's not boring. Now about it's transport system. It consists of a metro, trolleybus system, tram system, ropeway, a children railway and bus services. - The Metro was opened in 1975 and it has 3 lines: Kholodnohirsko-Zavodska, Saltivska and Oleksiivska (you can simply call them lines 1, 2 and 3, just to not struggle with the names). It uses the Russian 1520mm gauge and 825v DC third rail supply. The roling stock is consisted of: Ezh-3 series (built 1973-1979 by Metrovagonmash, 5 cars, DC resistor drive), 81-717/714 "Nomernoy" (built since 1976 by Metrovagonmash), 81-718/719 "Nomernoy" (built between 1991-2004 by Metrovagonmash, a modification that has a Thyristor drive), 81-7036/7037 (built in 2010 by Kryukov Train Factory, single set) and modernized Ezh-3 series trains. - The tram system was opened in 1906 and it has 17 routes. It is often considered one of the most knackered in Ukraine, even more than the Kiev's. The reason being mostly poor track conditions and rolling stock conditions, which often causes derails. The rolling stock is consisted of: Tatra T3/T3SU (built 1962-1999 by CKD Tatra), Tatra T6B5 (built 1983-2007 by CKD Tatra), 71-619 (aka KTM-19, built 1999-2012, by Ust-Katav Tram Factory), Tatra T6A5 (built 1991-1998 by CKD Tatra, second hand trams brought from Prague in 2016) and modernized Tatra T3 trams called VPA/VPNP (modernized 2009, 2018) - The Trolleybus system opened in 1939 and it has 24 routes. For some weird reason, they don't go into the city centre, despite having a fully functional overhead infrastructure). The fleet is consisted of: ZiU 682G-016.02 (built 2002-2015 by Trolza), LAZ E301D1 (built 2006-2013 by Lviv Bus Factory, articulated), LAZ E183A1 (built 2006-2013 by Lviv Bus Factory), Bogdan T70117 (built since 2010 by Lutsk Car Factory) and Skoda 14Tr and 15Tr (brought second hand from Riga, Plzen and Ceske-Budejovice) -The ropeway is a weird but still interesting feature in Kharkiv's transport. Despite being mainly used as an attraction, it was meant to be a form of public transport. It was opened in 1971, it's almost 1.4 km long, the whole journey takes about 18 minutes and you can touch leaves along the way while admiring some great views of the park. -The Children's "Mala Pivdenna" Railway is a very interesting entry. It is mainly used as an attraction as well as a formation centre for children in the railway works field. It has a narrow 750mm gauge and it's served by TU2 and TU7A locomotives pulling trains consisting of Pafawag 3aw and PV-40 railcars. -And finally the buses. They've been serving Kharkiv since 1925. The fleet is mainly made of marshrutkas, such as Bogdan Ruta, TUR, BAZ, MAZ and ZAZ, but there are also big capacity buses such as MAN-NL202 and Bogdan-A601. Now to the reasons why Ukraine's railways are so bad. The rail operator "Ukrzaliznitsya" has been blame for many year, but for what exactly. -Poor rolling stock conditions (the deterioration rate is estimated to be between 90% and 200%!) -All trains run late (medium delay is 20-30 minutes) -Poor track conditions (hence the slow speed, because of many speed limits) -Poor service such as dirty sheets in night trains, delays as cited before, poor assistance, dirty carriages, overcrowding issues on some rail lines and many more that i can talk about all day. You can see many complaints on Facebook towards the rail operator, and trust me, these make UK's National Rail look even better.

I've been on those trains. It is way less scary if you ride during the daytime. Suburban trains in Kharkiv are infrequent. The people who live in suburban areas have to be on time or else they will have to wait for another 1.5 hours. It happened to me once. Another thing. Don't just go out to some random location at night on those trains. Service back to Kharkiv is very rare during those times. Since I have been to Kharkiv multiple times, you can ask me any questions. I'll try to answer them.

This is better than most American suburban trains which run in peak direction only once per hour in most cities. No night or weekend service. Our trains are much newer though, although they’re usually diesel and absurdly heavy.

These trains sound very similar to the old CPTM trains in São Paulo. Gotta love those old motors!

Creepy indeed, and weird timetable setup. Might bee a small region. Söderhamn is part of a region that have a couple of regional train departures per day, but it is cosistent and have modern trains... There is, however, a route I found that only had a passenger train service only twice a day and direction. Once in the early morning and another in the late evnings. Including the night trains, it makes 4 trains. It was on the route between Umeå and Luleå wia the small villages inwards from the coastline.

I have no idea why they set acceleration rate so low on them. A driver can actually select from several settings on ER2R/T and ET2 (aka the trains that don't have rounded ends) and I'm not even sure if the lowest setting is *that* slow.

These are the same type of trains which take you from Slavutych to Chernobyl, the power station workers use it everyday, the Chernobyl ones have red vinyl seats. Depending on your Chernobyl your package, you may get to ride on these trains too. They are literally the same train, but they were built in 1988. The same time as Slavutych itself. Built to rehome some Pripyat residents.
