SPOONS IN SALTWATER - CASTING SPOONS, WHY YOU SHOULD USE THEM
Spoons have been a saltwater staple for a long time - before the advent of lures came about. Spoons are very versatile lures that can be used in shallow or deep water for any fish that eats smaller fish. Their decline over the years is attributed to the rise of more modern methods, but it doesn't mean that they can not catch fish - it's just that they are quite simple and not as good looking to fishermen these days. I have been using them since I was a kid and caught my first fish on a lure with a spoon - needless to say, spoons have been part of my fishing system for a very long time and I will continue to use them for a very long time.
Spoons have been a mainstay in saltwater fishing for a long time. Giving way to more "modern" types of lures, they have been relegated to the background - an easy manufacturing process means it is easily copied and certainly, thes very effective lures have been not only copied but mutated. You can now find most of the popular models or a mutation for sale all over the world. Spoons are not the most complicated of lures, using them is not really complicated - just cast and retrieve and the spoon will work - they can be cast, jigged, hopped on the bottom, retrieved subsurface or mid depth and they work their magic, when fish are boiling, you can buzz them on top and is a killer!
Spoons can be presented in a variety of ways and depending on the shape of the spoon, can be used in shallow or deep water, from the bottom all the way to the top. Their versatility is only matched by the angler's creativity and ability to adapt them into different situations. Spoons are and will always be some of the world's most enduring lures - surviving the test of time and the many modern ways of fishing that are available to the angler - in fact, a lot of what we see now are just mutations of this very effective lure.

Thanks for this video. Do you use wire leaders to prevent cut offs? If not, what leader do you use?
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit 3 года назад
you can use a short piece of soft wire if there are toothy fish around, or if they are your target.

Hi, just wondering how u present in if u vertical jig it. I use it once or twice, and if I reel it to fast it spin, if I slow it down going up it doesn't feel like I'm doing vertical jig correctly. Thanks in advace
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit 3 года назад
For spoons for vertical jigging, I prefer the heavier ones like the Kastmaster, I work them near the bottom and thump the bottom with the spoon, lift it up a few feet with the rod and drop it back down again. I try to make it flutter, so I lift the rod slowly more than snap it up. I want the jig to wobble, not spin.

A very educative video! I started to learn jigging few months ago. I saw some spoons such as “cast master” introduced. It looks like to me the hook can be relocated to another end so that we can have it swimming differently. I wonder if this is alright?
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit 2 года назад
the action remains pretty much the same, but you can use it like a vertical jig, it has a different motion, than "normal" slow jigs, but it works :)

You mentioned the smaller kastmater knockoffs as being 20g. What weight are the other two bigger sizes? I'm fishing from the shore and need to go way out to find action. What weight could go far without much effort consistently?

if the spoon lure is too light and you cannot cast to far, can you add a swiwel with a small weight on your line ,30 inch far from the lure?
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit 2 года назад
If the spoon is too light, it means your rod and reel is not the right size to cast it, OR you are using a spoon not meant to be casted out (there are spoons designed to be trolled, not cast). You can add some weight as you have mentioned and it will work from time to time.

Hi my friend, thanks for this video I have some questions: 1- can i use this micro spoon with snap? Or swivel? Or knot it directly to the fluorocarbon? 2- do i use spoon like jerkbait? Just retrieving? Or like jig? 3- what kind of fish can I catch by spoon?
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit 2 года назад
You can catch almost anything with a spoon. You can use it like a jerkbait AND a jig. And you can attach it with a snap (take the stock front split ring off), a small swivel on top keeps you from getting line twists. if it has a split ring or solid ring on top, you can tie off with your leader there as well. As you can see, it is very versatile and you can use it anyway you want for any fish.

If you are using a lure that spins always use a swivel which will prevent a lot of line twist.

How do you use the little spoon. you should make a video on how you use all the different type of spoons
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit 3 года назад
Thanks for the feedback. I have been thinking about this for a while, in fact, even before making the video. However, I also realize using spoons is very straight forward - you cast them out and reel them in. The speed of your reeling is the key factor - you don't want them to spin, you want them to wobble. How fast you reel in depends on your reel - each reel from each manufacturer is different, even from one make, there are several versions - like if I told you that I was using my Stella 1000, before it was only available in PG, a slow ratio. But now, they have faster versions, so showing you on my reel doesn't really translate to the same thing. The best way is to try it with your reel, see what speed makes is wobble and not spin - then just cast and reel with that speed. Hope this helps.
