Sporterizing The Mosin Nagant 

I did a similar build for a friend. The barrel and action on his gun required me to dremel the crap out of his stock, but a few hours of grinding and fitting ended up with a nice fit with a free-floated gun. He's got a few hundred round through it with zero problems.

That is going to look great!! I'm all for doing things on the cheap! The re-crowning looks good. Looking forward to the next install!

I was very happy to just drop it in .. now to figure out the rest of it .. I just did a video and am now getting good feed back to help direct me.

I understand the concerns .. for whatever reason it seems the 22 inches is a very common lengh and 28 inches was way to long. It would be hard to tell because the original way was iron sights and my setup will be scooped.

Don't forget to float that barrel all the way to the chamber, it will help the accuracy. Nice looking stock and nice build, thanks for showing it.

oh I'm definitely going to be shooting it on paper to see how it does, the problem is I have no benchmark because it was just iron sights before.

Hey Nick .. I know what your talking about .. I have looked at a couple of awesome looking ones .. $105. I also have seen issues with some of the custom turn down bolts working with the ATI rail.

Looking good Eric. Personally, had I gone with a Mosin instead of an SKS, I would have purchased an actual bent bolt that would go directly in place of the original straight one. Not sure if you get similar ones down there but up here, a site called Westrifle sells them. I have yet to see how well they function but it gives that bent look like on the original sniper builds. I'll be going full on modding my SKS over time just figuring out what avenue I'm going to take with a scope mount.

I want to get another Mosin so I can do this. I want to leave one original and modify the other. Why does a barrel need to be crowned? If you look at bull barrels, they're flat on the end. This project is looking good E

Looks like a cool project! I wish I had the time and money to put one of those together for myself!

The biggest one is the condition of the bore. Then how the bolt feels when you open and close the action .. if your not going to sporterize it you may also want to wood to be in good shape.

another good vid you might want to check out brass stacker scope mounts i had 2 ati mounts and they would not hold zero bras stacker never moves..have had it almost a year now.

I know I am still going to have a little bit of work, I have a set of bedding pillars and I will be confirming that the barrel is free floating. I figured since I've gone this far I'm just going to make sure it's all correct.

Wonder if you ran a cigarette paper between the barrel and the stock to see if it was free floating or not. Heck, I don’t even know if it is supposed to be free floating, but I learned that when I put a sport stock on my 1903-A3. Couldn’t hit squat till I chiseled out some of the wood so that the barrel was free floating. Glad I worked with someone that learned me on that. I see you didn’t use your hex receiver for this, and I didn’t expect that you would.

Yeah mate I got that from the video, but did you just do it by hand or in one of those fancy dremel drill press things to be a little bit more precise?

Hell, at least you're doing something with yours. Mine's still leaning in the corner full of cosmoline. Just can't seem to get enough time in one chunk to clean it up and try it out.

At my local Gander Mt, they sell and have about thirty Mosin Nagants for about 179 each and I guess that is fair, but I don't know really how to select or what are some good key points to look for so I don't select a paperweight. My concerns are about the use or life of the barrel or how to select one with safe internals. Always looking for some good advice. Well done video.

did you buy the stock from ati directly? or from a distributor? im puting it off until i know the stock i buy fits correctly. all the first gen stocks i know you had to trim stuff. i want it to fit like yours.

Wonderful example of a well thought out educational video. I love It! Made me feel empowered to try it myself.As far as what I know about the Mosin,is that it is a medium to longer range weapon with a barrel length raging from 20 to 29 inches. Eric, you know I'm going to bring you to task here. You want an AR10 with a 20 inch barrel, and here you take a 20 inch barrel and cut it down to 16" for a Sporty.???? Just a little Ball Busting here! LOL BTW, Beautiful rifle. Have Fun Be Safe :)

FYI, There is a guy on Ebay in UT. For $30 you send your entire bolt assembly in to him and he replaces the bolt handle with a real nice turn down bolt welded in. He polishes the bolt assembly and sends it back within a week to10 days.
