Gonna miss Bergen. Used to go with my dad when I was young and ride all night. What an amazing time. If those walls could only talk.

A great historical account of the famous Rescue 2.....A past memory: While I was an acting LT in the Boston FD my brother FF and I visited Rescue 2 for a 24-hour shift. They were in with Engine 210. The Brothers treated us very well, fed us a delicious supper (interrupted a few times). We were called out to maybe 2-dozen responses, 6 were All-Hands and, one was an explosion with fire (2-alarms) as the final response during our memorable time with a fine group of Brother Firefighters.

Rescue 2 was my grandfather’s last company before he retired in the late 60’s early 70’s. He had received the Thomas E. Crimmins award while R2 as well. Been trying to find photos of him with his company. FF Ray Willson

I'm surprised you didn't mention the exploits of Lt. Richard Hamilton, once the most decorated firefighter in FDNY history! I read his book, "20,000 Alarms" a few years ago and it was a good read. He was a lieutenant with Rescue 2 for many years, including the crash and fire at the "Piller of Fire" church in Brooklyn when the two airliners crashed. He also responded to the carrier fire where he almost died from carbon monoxide poisoning, but survived. He retired in 1975, but all the local media wanted to interview him. On that, he showed up to an interview and were upset that he didn't wear his medals. "I'm no damn Mexican General!" he told them. "I'm just a guy retiring."

Nice... R2 was on full display years back on the tv show "the bravest"... good show that gave a accurate account of FF life without romanticizing it... sad to see some of the guys in that series were killed on 9-11... keep up the good work

Hope to visit their new house someday. Met a great bunch of guys there 2001, after 9/11. They lost Lt Pete Martin, FFs Billy Lake, Eddie Rall, Lincoln Quappe, Kevin O’Rouke, Danny Libretti and John Napolitano 9/11/01. Pete Lund (Ret. FDNY but LODD Woodmere NY 6/14/2005).

Why do many FDNY FFs not buckle the waist belts on their Scotts prior to entering a structure

As a buff I, of course, like the Bergen Street house. I'm sure that as much character it had it also probably outlived its purpose. How about a spotlight on Ladder 3 sometime?

What an honor... I was a student at PS 243. And lived on Dean Street. The Bergen St house was right behind my school. An added bonus was Engine 234 and ladder 123 up the street. The 80s was LIT!!!!

@@kill-shot1186 It’s still standing on Bergen Street with the big red bay door and Rescue 2 logo starting to fade and the whole firehouse is left sitting there abandoned to this day because no agency like FDNY EMS or any other fire truck company has taken it after Rescue 2 left, this is the same circumstance with the long gone and forgotten Engine 212’s quarters just sits abandoned today
