A Ruger American Rimfire rifle is a step up on this for sure if someone really wants to use 10/22 mags. Though, I agree that a Savage MkII is probably a better bet overall at that price point.
I got my savage mkii for $159 earlier this year. My only complaint is the mag. Other than that, it's shooting nice groups (little over 1") at 100yds with a 1-4 viper pst in top. I think once I get a higher magnification optic on top, it should be sub moa with good ammo.
Josh I could see the frustration in your eye's brother love the video's even though I will never be a comp shooter I've watched a ton of you video's keep up the good work 👏 honestly is key
Like your honesty. Would like to see you send it back to Springfield and see what they do. Double check your scope base and be sure there isn't an issue. I've had several that come factory mounted that had a burr sticking up from the threads in reciever.
Seen another channel send his off and they did absolutely nothing after keeping it for two months, sent it back still shooting awful. Seems BLAZER ammo is the only one that runs halfway decent.
Totally agree with your statement about a kids rifle needing to be more accurate than this particular rifle. With kids Fun has a lot to do with shooting, (same could be said for adults) and not hitting your target or being able to show any sign of improvement would be frustrating and somewhat demoralizing to a new shooter. One of my rifles is a Savage Mark II that can be had for $250 and it would walk circles around this particular rifle. I'd love to get into a premium 22lr rifle setup, but I have too much fun reloading for precision with my larger calibers. Knowing the in inconsistencies in mass manufactured ammo on top of it being 22lr, I've been extremely happy with my Savage Mark II and my old Ruger 10/22 target.
Thanks for the informative clip Josh, honest review but you are a more patient man then me buddy I’m thinking it would make a great boat anchor or boomerang. Thanks Josh enjoyed your clip.
Great video I was using cci standard Torqued my reciver bolts to 25 lbs made a big difference had no trouble with ruger mags at all but i did have issues with the eley as well sk ran fine cci aswell sk did the best semi auto but imo it does need a better barrel and maybe bedding the action but for the price it is what it is
Thanks for the update and again honest review Josh, did you check that the barrel is indeed free floating in the stock ? and check the action bolt torque settings ? Also if you have a bore scope, it would be interesting to see if the chamber is cut in line with the bore.... It's interesting as 22plinkster's version seemed to shoot pretty good, which as you had already stated, just highlights quality control issues, some may be ok, then you'll also get some lemons...
I took EC's advise and duct taped a 1 1/4" HF 1/2" drive socket to the end of my 2020, boy does it help and the duct tape makes adjustments easy, world class shooter promoting WC equipment, hell yea brother! Edit. - Don't do this mod, it is a joke, and EC does not approve of this message, except on April 1st then its fine
Thank you Josh for your efforts and time. I hope people at Remington see this and fix the problem or one of these days America is going to rate right down there where Japan use to be. In my day if it said made in Japan it was sub par. Now Japan make quality everything.
I was hopeful that the 2nd video would show different results, especially with the aftermarket upgrades. I wanted to like this gun and might've bought a wood stock version but not likely now. Thanks for taking the time to do this. One question from someone who is NOT a target shooter, is there any chance that adjustments to the action screws might make a difference ? I have seen that on 22's before so just a suggestion.
I just found your channel and love, love, love your speed video of grouping. That is a game changer for shooting videos. On a more pertinenet note, I highly, highly, highly most certainly recommend you get a Jewell trigger to try to improve accuracy on rifles that use that R700 platform. I am not usually into trolling, but Timney is not a game changer, in my holy opinion.
Hey Josh, I will have to agree with you on all points. I had good results using 10/22 magazines, and my only feeding issues came with Eley Match & Eley Team ammo. The bullet design of the semi flat nose, I feel, plays a part. When shoot actual flat note bullets, I didn't see the feeding issue. As you, we will see if anyone starts making premium barrels for this gun. I like the aluminum mag well & trigger guard and how it mates up with the action. The conical breech face is interesting, to say the least. If the tuner couldn't help the accuracy, then that tells me the barrel is the issue. My guess is you will see Springfield coming out with a Gen 2 that will have better barrels and higher price points. Springfield, with being late to the gate, in having a 22lr rifle, did the quickest and cheapest thing they could do to get in on the fad. It a shame because there are some interesting engineering points with this rifle. I won't be putting any more money into this rifle until I see a premium barrel come out for it. To everyone on the Springfield 2020, buyer beware! Thanks for the review, Josh!
The conical breach is similar to what savage does on the b22 which has a threaded barrel, and a nut for headspace. The manufacturing can be done on a lathe, without the need for timed extractor slots, cut with a milling machine. Makes for a very solid barrel connection, with adjustable headspace (if threaded, with a barrel nut).
How about checking the crown? Maybe recrown the barrel ? Lap the barrel? My Ruger American Rimfire had accuracy issues I recrowned the barrel that helped then I lapped the barrel with JB Bore Paste now it shoots MOA at 50yds with TAC .22
What I enjoyed most, was watching your solutions to learn what be the best area to start testing upgrades. That is why I loved your 10/22 video as you went from stock to nearly totally upgrading everything. Maybe we will all run into a lemon of a rifle and goods to see what can be done, if you want to spend the additional money to do so. Thanks for taking the time to make what seemed to be a frustrating time with that rifle.
Hey Josh. How about having a play with the action screw torque setting. The guy over on Oh Shoot seemed to be shooting bug holes so there may be something there?? It would be interesting to see with the upgraded trigger. Only thing I would change is he loosened the screw and then as he increased the torque he wouldn't loosen the screw first. Doing it that way you have to overcome the friction of the screw head against the stock rather than having a smooth motion from 0 all the way to the desired torque.
Have you tried working on bedding? Add a layer of aluminum tape to bedding area and then work on finding torque setting for bedding? From the node you shot - I’d start there and tweak bedding pressure starting at 5 in/lb and working up. Might get it be consistent? From experience, rifles that show ‘promise’ usually benefit from tweaking bedding pressure.
Thanks for the video. My factory 10/22 FS Ruger shoots better groups with CCI ammo than yours did with the upgrades and better ammo. Sorry for your lemon, but thank you for the honest reviews on this rifle both times.
What if you put a small amount of pressure on the barrel with something like a piece of foam. Ive done that in the past where the barrel being free floating wasnt idea for it and that little bit of contact with a piece of foam or cork made a difference.
I was waiting (rather impatiently) for this second trial. Thank you by the way, I was seriously considering this rifle. If one limited ones shooting to 10 yards, it wouldn't look so much like the turd, we now know it is. It would make a good future project , assuming you want to pull all your hair out and start drinking.
Mine shoots decently. Just over moa at 100yds with cci sv. Would like to try some SK or Eley. Installed the cheapest Triggertech. Seems they’re just inconsistent. Some shoot and some don’t.
Man I really enjoy your info was thinkin bought one of those because I have some rem bench rest triggers. I have a few good shooters..I want a bolt with a magazine mine are single shot. Think I'll go with another anschutz
Owning other Springfield rifles (Waypoint 2020), I was very interested in what they produced with their 22lr platform. Thanks for the honest review, needless to say, I will NOT be purchasing one of these rifles. Keep it CZ457!
My SPFD 2020 also fails to feed reliably with Ruger mags. My 2020 RF will make the 1" with 3 shots at 50y guarantee but still basically not match accuracy, so can't sent it back and can't shoot matches with it. Also scoped mine and the barrel, crown and chambering looks ok. One thing I noticed on mine is that when I run my rod and cleaning patch down the bore it feels looser than all my other 22RF barrels. So all you out there telling Josh he did not do this or did not do that or did it wrong or send it back, you just might consider what he has showed you is what it is, its NOT GOOD.
If Springfield really wanted a good product with these they should've made it compatible with 457 barrels. R700 trigger + 10/22 mags + 457 barrel compatibility would be the perfect combo for a turnkey factory option for NRL22 or PRS22.
I've watched several reviews of this rifle. Your attempt to tune it was insightful. None of the reviews produced accuracy any better than yours. It appears to be bad barrels. Is the barrel threaded into the receiver or wedged like the 10/22? I was waiting for my background check to clear and was going to buy one. But...that is defiantly a no go now.
I went through this same process and same if not worse results. Have you talked to Springfield at all if so I’m interested what you heard from them. I’m currently working on getting a new barrel blank and going to see about barrel swapping it now worst factory 22 besides how decent the action feels
Try jamming about 1 1/2" moa worth of shim in the front of the stock. Upward barrel tension has helped shrink groups in most budget 22's I own, and doesn't cost a dime. I would be curious to know how the barrel is attached to the action? Threaded? Sae?
I get 1” groups at 50yards with shitty subsonic winchester bulk ammo. Idk wtf happened to your barrel but I would send it back. It’s the best made .22 out there for $379 price matched from brownells. Thick heavy barrel. Full size stock. Great threads. Excellent trigger when adjusted lighter. I really don’t understand why you would get a different trigger. Mine is so crisp and light I can bet it’s under 4pds. Factory set is 4pds. Any lighter and it’s just dangerous. This gun is a beast!! I have yet to try target or match ammo. Try augula super white blue yellow box
Ya I guess I mean I was crossed between getting the cz 457 or this one I liked this one cause it's flush were rhr magazine loads but cz seems to fbe the better pick
I'm honestly surprised at these results. I've put a few thousand rounds through mine and I've had nothing close to the feed and accuracy issues shown here. The trigger should absolutely be replaced, which is a shame and makes the value proposition questionable, but its at least a standard 700 trigger. What's mind boggling is that the factory trigger is adjustable, but it bottoms out at 4lbs, so I'm not sure why they bothered.
Maybe lapping the barrel with some JB Bore bright like 100 strokes would help?. Or at this point and the way is shoots maybe lapping the barrel with some Comet or Ajax with the Blue Crystals. Will it help? prolly not, but it damn sure can't hurt it at this point. Always amazing to me how you can grab some 100 year old .22 and it shoots way better than expected and you buy a new one with all the technology we have and it's a Turd.
Josh, Do you know if the barrel is threaded into the action? The Springfield Armory did not have that information when I called them today. I hope Elijah is going to have a Thanksgiving challenge. I think you should give us all a break and shoot the Springfield 2020 in his next challenge. LOL
Well I was going to get this 22LR for a Christmas gift but after watching this video I'm not getting this junk of a bolt. Another gun slips out of my reach. I want a bolt 22 I have others but even my nylon 66 shoots better Thanks for your update
Clean the barrel and check the Crown with a Q-tip. Look for small fibers left by the Q-tip around the lands and grooves. If it has good ignition and a good crown its 400 dollar paper weight.
That is the first thing I thought of as well. Had a buddy that had a savage centerfire that was like a blunder bust. Shot 3” groups at 100 Lapped the barrel with some pinch in the muzzle end, sub half inch all day.
Can you do a post mortem of sorts? How well does it headspace? Can you put any gages on it or anything? Crown or barrel issues possibly? There probably is a smoking gun somewhere as to why its shooting sub par and its got me curious now.
Is there a witness mark on the barrel? Im hesitant to buy this model of tuner for my b14r, because I don’t understand how to time the weight, without etching some sort of mark on the barrel.
Mine at 50 yds was getting .5 moa but I was having extracting issues like you did. Also, mine hates Ruger mags as well. They get stuck in the gun. Any idea on a fix for extracting or the mags?
Hum, something specific, send it back to Springfield with both videos and ask them to test and rebarrel it with an actual Target barrel. I can't believe that they would sell something like this. Just a suggestion.
Hey when you watch the sootch00 video he uses fiochi target match grade 22lr ammo he was getting under 1/2 inch at 50yards. This might be an ammo issue ?
I have to say you may have gotten a linen. I was having some issues with mine initially, but then I re-torqued the receiver screw to 35 inch pounds and then the trigger guards screw to about 15 inch pounds as recommended by the manufacturer I was able to get half inch groups of 50 yards with CCI mini mags. I’m not sure if scrubbing the bore out with some JB bore paste helped as well but I have to disagree. Mine is a shooter.
One would think, trying to compete in the 22lr game, you need to put your best product out, Apparently, Springfield was just looking at selling a product, The customer base will sink this before it even get started .................
