This is a table top review and comparison of the Sprinfgield Saint Edge and the original Springfield Saint. Do you think its worth the price difference?
If anyone who is curious, I have the edge and it is my first AR. My cousin who is big into shooting sold his FN to get the edge because he loved mine so much. We both use it for fun and tactical training. Neither of us would trade them.
This is THE BEST Saint Edge review on youtube. Well done! I am very interested in this rifle, to say the least. This beast being a Springfield means it's a name and quality I can trust.
Springfield is a bought out name these days, not the same as the early u.s military asenal; they live off the name and piece together firearms from cheap parts makers, many not even located in the US.. honestly as far as ar15s go, if you want a good one stick with bcm, daniel defense, solgw, fn, ect.. better parts and qc.
@@billycole852 Being accessorized with a Bcm stock and grip doesn't make it anything of a bcm rifle. Especially not where it counts -ie the barrel, bcg, upper/lower recievers, and other parts. Edit: and yes I'm sure their ar's are 100% US made, it wouldn't make sense to buy parts for that type of rifle when there is such a buyers market for ar15 parts here in the USA. But most of their other offerings are NOT made fully in the US such as m1a, XD, ect
Just picked up the Edge yesterday after lots of research and handling. This is my first AR and also my first Springfield product. The only thing I plan on adding to it is a red dot, forward grips, and sling. Fit and finish is great. I can't wait to try it out !
Yea, I'm glad I bought the original Saint. I just slapped in a Radian Raptor and a Geissele buffer/braided spring recently and it shoots like a dream. Awesome video.
I have the original, I love the classic M-16 look. The newer models have forward M-LOK hand guard like the edge. I easily added a red dot sight or 3x9 scope with laser, a forward removable Bipod or a handgrip, and finally a removable high intensity spotlight on the side rail.
Great review I still love my Saint, just with a scope added, perfect for me, feels just like the M16A2 I had in the Marines. Great AR no matter what Saint you go with, just prefer the original.
I have the original Saint and I’m very pleased with it. Would I like the upgrades of the edge model? Sure...but sometimes old-school has its benefits like the heavier barrel, for example.
This is an excellent comparison video. You make it easy to see how the newer model "Edges" out it's older brother. From a marketing standpoint I wish they would have just called it the Edge. Springfield Saint Edge doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Springfield Saint and Springfield Edge both sound good independently. Sorry, just the ramblings of someone with slight OCD issues. :)
Great review and comparison. I already opted for the Edge that now has a phenomenal flat match grade trigger and I am extremely content with this rifle’s upgrades, out of the box.
@@alexisflores5220 I just threw 600 rounds through my Edge yesterday and no issues. Sent 300 downrange with my Saint Free Float yesterday too and same...no issues. Love the trigger on the Edge. Huge difference. Happy to have both the Free Float and the upgraded Edge and have tons of fun and no issues with either. Glad I didn't buy Gen 1 when my buddy did. He bought an Edge and now the Gen 1 is his loaner to the new guys at the range. He treats it like it's a red-headed stepchild...Ha! I recommend Free Float or Edge but Edge worth every penny more for the trigger alone! Have several thousand rounds through both and only issues I had were not with the gun but with ammo a manufacturer had us testing. Great guns...super solid!
I got the saint edge on sale for 829! It was an unbelievable price! Also springfield gives a great military/le/emt pricing. The saint edge thru springfield special pricing is 985
You sure you didn't buy the Saint "Free Float" for $829? Looks very similar to Edge other than Trigger basically (has other modifications also though...). There are 3 rifle versions of the Saint presently. $829 - $899 is typical price range for Free Float. While Edge typically $999 - $1199 range. but smoking deal and worth every penny if you bought the Edge for $829!!!
I have done my research and I believe the Saint Edge is the ar for me. This was a great review. I couldn't find any one who had experience with both the Saint Edge and Savage Recon. I have looked at features of both and believe the Recon is more accurate than Saint, but the Saint does come with better furniture that doesn't have to be replaced. I'm looking to get into competition shooting in my next years of my life and this video review was well done to help me make my decision. Thank you I liked the video and subscribed to your channel. Keep on keeping on sir.
I am glad you enjoyed the video and that you found it useful. I really appreciate you watching and I appreciate your feedback. I hope you enjoy your Edge when you pick it up!
What you are really buying when you buy a long gun from Savage is the excellent inherent in their receivers, triggers/fire-control groups, and barrels. Blackhawk is part of the same consortium which owns Savage, which is why their ARs use BH furniture and accessories. Every Savage rifle I have ever own has been an absolute tack-driver - highly-accurate right out of the box. They routinely outshoot guns costly 2-3x as much. So, if you feel that the Savage more accurate than the SA carbine, get the Savage and simply swap out the furniture for some Magpul or whatever it is you want. I used to work in the retail FA industry, and never had any complaints from customers who bought Savage products from us. Just my two cents...
The edge and an xdm are my first guns I bought. Overall I like them. Wish I had more money to train often, the drive to my range is also about 35 minutes
I really like this, very informative and right on point with the review. This is one of the videos that help me to decide on my purchase of this Springfield.
Original Saint is a workhorse that’s yet to fail me. Handles combat loads at the club a couple times a month just fine. Keep it clean, well oiled, and if you shoot a lot, change the gas rings when needed. Not bad for $800 out the door in 2019. Peace ~
I like parts of both guns, for me I like the flash hider over a muzzle brake, I prefer the A2 gas block and front sight over the flip up front sight, I prefer the non free float barrel (I am not worried about the half MOA difference it might make at 100 yards), I like the heavier barrel. Now I like the edges qd sling attachment points on it's receiver, and it's styling. I like the oversized charging handle, and the trigger on the edge. Overall I guess I am glad I went with the original saint for what I use it for, slinging alot of lead at between 50 and a 100 yards at my range.
Great video, I own the gen 1 saint and love it, I have changed out the rail and added a bravo company forward grip, vortex red dot, green laser and light.
One mistake I heard was that the original and the edge were both forged upper and lower receivers. Only the original Saint has forged upper and lower. The Upper on the edge is forged, but the lower is billet. Forged is a stronger final product than billet aluminum and forged is Mil-Spec...billet is not. Otherwise, I think you were spot on.
Those sights are not made by Springfield but rather UTG in case you're needing to replace one. I bought my saint edge pre-owned and had to hunt down those sights. Check out the MT745 and MT945 for 45 degree offsets that match the original sights as well. MNT-955 should be the original rear by UTG
Well until seeing this video I was set on purchasing the saint now it looks like I will be purchasing myself an edge. The saint is a great rifle but the edge with it's up grades just pushed it over the top for me. The price is a little hefty but you get what you pay for. Thank you much for the insight. Great review.
Very good video. Great details and great close ups. Thank you for your time. A lighter weaker barrel is never an upgrade. People need to do some curls, push ups and forearm exercises if you find an AR-15 too heavy. The heavy barrel on the edge would have earned my money. Because of that "upgrade", I'll pass on it and keep looking at the other Saints or some other brand altogether.
The Saint Edge now is massively upgraded from that one you're showing. You couldn't pick one up that I'm talking about for less than 1500 with no sites.
I have the original and have shot many AR’s and for all practical purposes I don’t see the reason to pay more. Nether one is a competition rifle and wasn’t meant to be one. They are both good for the intended purpose...and both for the price you get great builds out of both. In practically I do not see why I would pay more to have a few ounces shaved or to have a more modern looking gun....that’s just my opinion from another owner....!
Went to Chris's shop on Saturday to get my hands on an Edge. Asked for him to go over it. He told me all about it as if he had built it. I knew immediately I was going home with it. After the paperwork and a swipe of the plastic, he admitted that he up loaded the video the night before. Sorry gang. The one in the video is mine. This was my first transaction with Chris. I will definitely be back.
I dont care fore lightweight profile barrels UNLESS it done like Faxon did with their Gunner series,..and fancy lightening cuts,..ehh they don't really do anything for performance for a fighting rifle,..just throw a midwest drop-in handguard on it. Id keep the barrel and A2 post of the original,... its bomb proof.
Pretty sure that they weren't going for a "fighting rifle" with the edge, more of a sporting/race gun; ie with the big muzzle break and adjustable block.
Don't know if anyone passed this on to you. The cuts on the right side of the bolt is where the plunger from the forward assist gains purchase to push the bolt fully into battery.
The Saint Edge IS "the free float Saint". There's another variant called the Victor, which is the original Saint with a free float, but the rest is the same. The Edge is the top end of this production run so far.
No way there’s a $400 plus difference between the two. I have the original with the BC furniture and it just wouldn’t make sense for me to upgrade at that price point. 😀
“Won’t find the MSRP online” Wish I could’ve gotten to the market sooner. Just bought my first hand gun and shotgun two years ago. Really wanting the Springfield Saint to finish up my three gun
Thank you sir! Excellent video! By the way you were the first person to mention anything about the Trigger Pull weight!!! Five stars for that! These other idiots must not think it matters!
Just bought the edge about a month ago it’s my first AR and I love it always get compliments on it the only thing I added was a Holosun green dot and it’s good to go
I paid 1300 in December 2020 for a saint because it was the last one in the shop. I love it. Lube it correctly and it is a monster. Don't use crap oil. If the oil is yellow don't use it. Use a clear like high end. I use the same for my Kimber raptor and cz Rami 40 cal sub compact
Caution 9310 is more sensitive to heat treatment it is only stronger than 158cm of its perfectly treated but oftentime they are not. 9310 is much cheaper to source. You are widening your margin of trust in manufacturing quality control when you buy 9310 bolt.
Have the 1st gen Saint like the one on the bottom and I agree, its a workhorse. Shoots anything I put in it and holds true. Hell it shoots just as good if not better than my other more expensive AR's or my buddy's. Didn't add any nonsense stuff on it just a red dot and it's a tack driver at 500yds. Might put a good scope on it to see if I can reach out further. Also those flip up sights are not springfield. There UTG Leapers with there logo on them.
The pencil barrel of the EDGE is similar to the 1st Mini14. As accurate as throwing rocks. I haven't fired my Edge enough to see how heating the barrel does. But I remember the mini14 being great running, loved it, but not accurate at all.
Question: Is the Edge muzzle brake a typical screw-on accessory that can be replaced with a suppressor ... and, if so, what's the barrel front end's diameter and thread count? ½" x 28TPI?
The edge has more features and the original is more basic but I gotta say both are probably equally as capable and durable. The pencil barrel on the edge is light weight but I wouldn’t want to go to war with that thing.
2021 here talking. Wanted to get an ar before the world ends(probably not, but never know lol) Wish I got the saint a year or 2 ago lol. Got it for $950. Which is good for today's climate but the prices of everything have legit skyrocketed. If you can find anything in stock.
Does the edge have a Flat face trigger from the factory? Could have sworn I saw one. I would have loved to see the victor too I think more people are interested in that and the edge for the price upgrade between the two the victor is kind of a no brainer and it seems to be the same for the edge. For around $1100 I really don’t think you can find a complete rifle out of the box I think I’m going to pony up the few hundred extra and go with the edge I couldn’t believe how flat shooting and light it was I knew by the end of the first mag that was probably going to be the one I looked into iwi, sig, DD and the Springfield to me seems to be the best value the edge isn’t going to have me ordering parts online when I buy the rifle to change out other than a light and optic it seems to be ready to go I might switch out the charging handle for a raptor or something of the sort but I’m right handed so it’s not a huge deal. If you have the budget the edge can’t be matched for the money
Do a range review between the Saint Edge and the Savage Recon . The Savage Recon can drive tax at 100 yards and you get a lot more high end things for 850.00 .
Those are both nice, but if I could only have 1, I'd choose the FSB middy ALL Day. Don't get me wrong, I love free float mlok rails but I don't trust LPGB (low profile gas blocks) bc I've had 1 come loose on a mid-tier rifle (Sig m400 tread) during a range trip doing flat ground and bench rest shooting using quality factory ammo. I bought the rifle new and checked all the screws but I didn't check to see if there was threadlock or a dimpled barrel. Yes on both! So even though it was in spec from the factory, the set screw came loose and misaligned my LPGB. I've come full circle, now all I want to shoot is iron sight with carry handle and just a white light. Using the "KISS" method.
What is the saint that isn’t the saint victor or original or edge? There is one more model. I have it. On Springfields website it is called the B5... but they are all B5... the hand guards look different too
Is the VICTOR worth it over the original Saint???? I like the Edge but don't want to spend that much... VICTOR seems to have a better trigger than Saint.
The original stain was a plain mail spec ar that their was nothing really special about. The new version source a lot of parts from bravo company so it is significantly better and with updated design cues it is a great buy with someone looking for a ar with a little flair
For a novice of AR style weapons i liked the comparison. good info to know. i agree with another & would of liked to see the Free Float added comparison. Being a Springfiled owner myself, im looking into one of the 3 made. I own a near mint M1 Garand all original with matching numbers throughout. I added a National Match barrel for some odd reason. Springfield Bench Tested my firearm & said the original barrel has thousands of rounds left to be fired. After headspace adjustment, Parkerized to match the new barrel, cost less then $300. Now just want to upgrade my Mil Spec 1911 A1 .45acp. Looking at the 1911 PX9116LP .45acp. Thanks for the info, any suggestions about the Free Float Saint, im listening. Im back and forth on $715 for Original Saint compared to $1100 for Edge. The Free Float at approx $850, Id like to hear thoughts on any difference between original and free float other then the obvious free float barrel ... Thx ,,,,{°¿°},,,,
I own the Free Float and the Edge. Being a longtime Springfield fan I was excited about the Saint but did not pull the trigger on getting the Gen 1 because I already had 2 DPMS entry level AR's and the Saint Gen 1 with gas block stationary sight and standard forend, they were too similar to the DPMS's. I was hoping for something that didn't need to spend a lot more money on modifications. Then came the Free Float! At first look it was my dream come true I traded both DPMS's in on a Free Float. Solid platform without the need for a lot of mods and out of the box have shot several thousands of rounds through it. Only added a sling and optics and shot 25 , 50, 100, 300 yds ranges without any gun related issues. Very reliable and fun to shoot. I was skeptical of the Edge being already happy with the Free Float until I shot my buddy's Edge. Dang! There is a huge difference in triggers and bought one for my own and haven't had a regret. Put 600 rounds down range with it yesterday without any issue. Put 300 rounds through the Free Float too and no issues. I was sighting in new optics on the Edge but they didn't seem as fun as old optics on the Free Float so it was a good day at 100 & 200 yards with both guns. Personally, I am happy I waited. My buddy with the Gen 1 shot my Free Float and was hoping he had waited too. By the time you add a forend, rails, sling adapter you'd have more invested then going with a Free Float. Add the trigger and a few other mods to move to the Edge and for $1000-$1200 (about the going price range for the Edge) you can't go wrong! There are likely better more expensive AR's and less priced / less featured AR's going the other way but the Edge is a great gun and the Free Float is right there for the money ($800-$1000) too. Neither the Free Float or Edge didn't kill the bank account and has been fun and reliable since day one!
