About the Video: A comparison of Traditional 2D Sprites vs 3D Models of GUILTY GEAR for compare the two styles side by side, whose goal is to study and learn.
It wasn't hard for them since they use 3D models even before transitioning to 3D. They make the characters in 3D, then use them as guides when creating the pixels/2D image. There is a RU-vid video on how ASys do their masterpiece.
@@ChiriConCarne It was still very difficult, tracing over 3d poses when making sprites and fully animating the whole game and characters in 3d are two completely different beasts.
Amazing how they used all the advantages of 3D animation (better lighting, more fluid movement, more consistent sense of mass and direction, easier to track, higher definition, better sense of weight and cleaner look) while managing to carry over all the charming quirks of 2D animation (more exaggerated movement and changing proportions, stylish jagged movement, the same lighting and hand-crafted frames)
The trick to getting 3D to animate like 2D, is to skip frames. 3D animation tends to be too fluid. Cut back the number of animation frames and the result is like what you have on the right.
There is a video that explains how computers generate automated animations, and how Arc Sys broke the whole process by animating a limited number of frames manually.
I think this is one of the reasons why KOF XIV feels so sluggish to play. There's something really wrong in the way they animated the characters. One of the many reasons that killed that bootleg game for me.
Oh man don't get me started! I've been wanting a new Darkstalkers for ages, but when I saw the quality of work coming out of games like Guilty Gear and Dragonball FighterZ I got downright bitter that we'll probably never see it again, and even if we did Capcom would probably go for a more 3D look.
sadowolf It’s tragic, really. I’ve never had the opportunity to play a Darkstalkers game, but the amazing character designs and animation has really caught my interest, not to mention the surprisingly interesting backstories. If the series is ever to return, I would be disappointed to see it take the Street Fighter route aesthetically speaking. If they couldn’t get it to look as pretty as Guilty Gear or Blazblue, it would be neat to see them go with the tried and true 2D art and reanimate it all a la Skullgirls. I realize the tremendous amounts of time and effort required to hand draw so many thousands of sprites so expertly, but surely Capcom could pull it off.
@@Pixygon Darkstalkers was just as much fun to play as it was to look at, it took all the good stuff from the Street Fighter games along with its own spin on things so that it felt familiar but unique. Ono really pushed to produce a new Darkstalkers game, but Capcom basically sabotaged it by saying they'd consider it on the condition that their Darkstalkers Chronicle release sold well...but they released it on the Vita so it was pretty much doomed to fail from the start and everyone knew it. So now the suits at Capcom are convinced that people just don't want a new Darkstalkers game that much. If they did resurrect it, it's just easier for Capcom to stick with the style they've been using so unfortunately they probably would. I would hope that someone there would realize that you just can't get the best out of a Darkstalkers game visually unless you ramp up the stylization. I think they have access to the talent to make it look every bit as good as Guilty Gear or Blazblue, but I'm not as confident the company would put forth the effort. Actual traditional 2D art like Skullgirls would be fantastic, but that'll probably remain a pipe dream at this point since it's so expensive in terms of man hours and resources and Capcom probably just wouldn't do it because it's not practical when cel shading has gotten so good. Even SNK had to learn that lesson, which is why King of Fighters went from the gorgeous 2D sprites in KoFXIII to the drab 3D graphics in KofXIV (which is still an awesome game).
Dont let Capcom touch the series. They would surely make the likes of Jedah, Felicia and Raptor a fucking dlc. If even Guile, Sagat and Sakura are dlc in Sf5, i have no reason to doubt that. Rather DS absolutely needs to be in Arcsys hands, in a similar agreement as for Dbfz, that was between Bandai Namco and Arcsys.
@@takeoyagami6970 You could say that about every modern game. You need to judge the games based on how good they were for the time and how good they hold up, and compared to many 2D fighters around the same time. Guilty Gear XX still looks good.
@@ArmaBiologica35 Not really, look at Street Fighter V and IV. They have way worse animation and movement compared to the previous 2d ones. They also """replace""" a lot of physics and clothing animation with a physics engine, wich simply won't do the thing.
@@yourtags4876 well, even tha gam story don't acknowledge exactlyhow old is May, cause when she was rescued by Johnny, all he got was 10 May, the day that happened...
@@yourtags4876 May is pretty old but Ky...? He needs the FBI and he's the freakin' law!!! I hate how People are mad she's aging now, I mean even a adult child can't stay 7 forever, bout time she looks close to a teenager
When the time comes, maybe you can do another comparison showing the difference in models between Xrd and Strive. ;) ;) Edit: NEAR 100 LIKES!?!? This is amazing!
i refuse to believe that guilty gear DIDNT start as a challenge to see how many belts they can put on each character, then it just expanded into an incredibly good fighting game from there
And they are improving notably in everything new they make. Like, even in the history of Dbfz dlc updates they have shown amazing improvements, like from the first chars to the recent Gogeta and Broly.
Lets be honest, these guys at Arc System Works are the best among the industry. Incredible work. The first time 3D looks better than the old sprites...
Hmm... there's just such a charm to the hand-drawn 2D sprites... but goodness... their 3D cel-shaded work is masterful. I really appreciate the subtle deformations in geometry to simulate the imperfection of hand-drawn art. These guys have class. It really makes sense when you think about it. Doing this hybrid technique where the computer "draws" everything for you, but you go and adjust the frames as you wish (instead of redrawing and recoloring everything from scratch) and you save yourself headaches, time, money and energy. Glad to see this in use now. It's easy to tell when computers are drawing versus when humans draw... especially in anime.
Part of me still really likes scraggly, scrappy Kenshin-ripoff Baiken over her new, more original design. I mean look at her. It's like she an angry and emaciated stray cat you found out of a dumpster. Also Kenshin is cool.
@@carlbloke8797 I dont think they hate it at all. You can like both and have a preference. Like I also like 2d Baiken too because of the same reason. Hell that Baiken was even edited to be Kenshin in a Mugen edit :P
I personally prefer her much original feel on Xrd, specially with that haori hanging on her back, makes her look more dangerous. 2D Baiken is great too, but lacks originality in my opinion. As you all have already said, she was basically Kenshin, now she is her own angry thing...Plus, the muscles, she is far more muscular now.
@@xao_phan580 I agree with that as well! I actually confused her as male for awhile because of the Kenshin comparsions, and next to Anti Mito (with his poop hair) had one of the least well drawn sprites of the original game.
@@tadeuferreira4059 Okay i just found out i made a HUGE mistake. After searching for it i found it wasn't a movie it was just a promotion trailer made for Guilty Gear X. I first seen it on the PC version of the game last year and didnt bother loking for the "Movie" so i was thinking it was one the whole time. Sorry for wasting your time with this misleading information.
Only Millia seems can be improved on her hair part. The 2D sprite shows it can splits and flow while idle, the 3D polygon feels like a solid block hanging. All others are good.
Both styles look good. But some of the art and sprite work on the 2d characters, look better than the 3d versions. And in some cases in reverse, like 3d Baiken and Slayer look better, even though I like 2d Baiken alot more. Millia and Sol look better in 2d though. 2d Millia should get the black leg stockings.
Na minha opinião,a diferença entre o 2d e o 3d são: a imagem 3d tem menos serrilhados e alguns personagens tem 1 pouco mais quadros de animações em comparação à imagem 2d.
I like Xrd a lot, but looking at these side by side, there's so much more life to the drawn sprites, even though Xrd is more "bouncy" in some ways. There's an emptiness to those models that I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe I'm just looking too much into it.
The 3D ones look much better to me. I think a lot of that has to do with better character designs. The models in XRD are more shapely, whereas the ones in XX look more slim/stick like and a bit more stiffly posed.
Along with Dragonball, this is the most attractive "non-2D, 2D fighter". I sincerely wish Capcom would've actually put some effort into making any of the modern gen "versus" fighters half this attractive.
At first I missed the old sprites but now I feel they look better across the board. A lot better. Better silhouettes, better form and shape to the anatomy, better posing and weight distribution, better and more fluid animation, and better designed outfits. That's not 2D vs 3D of course, but over a decade more experience with character designs.
I mostly prefer the look of the 3D version of the characters, but I have to say I mostly prefer how they draw the faces of the 2D sprites, expecially on female characters.
The only character which I didn't like the transition that much was Millia, her stance and idle animations were more interesting and I'm not a big fan o her hair being all stiff like that all the time. (I miss dem thighs too)
I'm actually not too big on the spritework from older GG games. It definitely looks good and ASW still managed to give the sprites a lot of personality and charm, but compared to other 2D fighting games released before and around the same time (3rd Strike, X-Men vs Street Fighter, Darkstalkers), they didn't look as remarkable. This is probably the only case where I prefer 3D, especially since Xrd does 3D beautifully.
Tipo, sim e não... Kof devia imitar esse estilo só parcialmente, mas usando como referência o realismo dos sprites antigos. Não devia ser nem totalmente realista como os jogos da Namco Bandei, nem totalmente anime como os jogos da Arcsys.
It must be like the Kof Xiii situation. The huge investment couldnt allow the addition of many veterans. That Kof roster is very underwhelming. But that might change in the next GG... They might be able to bring more graphics quality and a bigger roster.
