Eating sprouted seeds is an easy, delicious way to capture a botanical’s nutrients, minerals, and vitamins at their peak. Depending on the sprouts you choose, they can be an excellent source of potassium, magnesium, folate, beta-carotene, calcium, vitamin C, and also vitamin K, which is a key vitamin for bone growth and blood clotting. They add flavor and texture to a wide variety of foods: salads, sandwiches, bagels, stir-fries, soups, frittatas, scrambled eggs, and more! These days they’re easy to find at farmers markets, natural foods stores, and in the produce section of many grocery stores, but did you know they are remarkably simple to grow right on your kitchen countertop? All you need is a jar, a sprouting screen or cheesecloth, seeds, and water.

Thank you so much for this video! I I've been wanting to grow microgreens, but I thought growing seeds was going to be so daunting. I didn't want to have to mess with the silicone mats or contamination from my 7 cats. 😅 This method is perfect!

I was also a bit scared of the process before trying it this way! We used a dish drying rack and it worked perfectly and helped to contain the mess 😂 The sprout screen also made it so much easier to clean the sprouts each day! Good luck on your sprouting journey! -Gracie

The sprouts in this video look nice. I have tried this several times a few years ago and now again last week and somehow, my sprouts always get moldy before they finish growing. (On about day four, they get thicker and it's like one giant clump so it seems to hold more moisture even though the jar is upside down draining (I have one of those lids with legs.))

Hi there! Mold can be a tricky thing with sprouts. The jar creates a great climate for seeds to sprout but also for mold to grow. Here is some info from our blog on sprouting seeds that you may find helpful: Mold can be a problem if your seeds experience high humidity, lack of air circulation, or insufficient draining. Always use sterile equipment, rinse with cool water (never rinse with warm water), drain very well, and supply a fan on days with heavy humidity. Note however that broccoli, radish, other brassicas, and grain seeds have root hairs that appear fuzzy and can be mistaken for mold. When rinsed, root hairs lay down against the main root, but may pop up again as they dry and lay down again when rinsed. These are not mold!

Quick and to the point! Any idea why some sprouting seeds say: not for jar sprouting. ? I bought some from another vendor and didn't notice the fine print until I got the bag. Thanks for great info.

Interesting! I'm not positive why that would be but I'm guessing that those seeds tend to be more susceptible to molding or bacteria growth? Sprouting in jars does tend to be pretty steamy and if you're not careful, can grow mold without proper rinsing. We do offer a sprout bag as well (mountainroseherbs.com/sprout-bag), however it's temporarily out of stock. But I bet you could find something similar on the internet! The sprouting bag says it's good for added air flow to the seeds and would probably be your best bet. I hope that helps to answer your question!
