I wish Spyderco would use the wire clip on more of their knives.

Brian, I think you are spot on calling this a tie! The value for the GB2 is tough to argue with as is the steel in terms of edge retention. The Kapara is just a spectacular design and while some folks are put off by the S30V blade it is an appropriate choice for this knife and Spyderco does it well. I would love to see it in LC200N and G10 as more of an EDC but it is hard to deny the beauty of that Carbon Fiber!

Only a knife snob would be put off by S30V. It’s just cray cray! It’s a damn good SUPER steel.

Man, if the gb2 had a compression lock I would buy 10 of them and never use a different knife. I still love it, but the lock access is nearly unforgivable. I still carry one but every time I have to take my glove off in the freezing cold to unlock the blade I cringe a little. If they put a blade like the gb2 on the kapara, I'd probably switch to that. Or even better...a gb2 with a button actuated compression lock and square flipper like the smock and rounded carbon scales like the kapara. Holy fuck spyderco, please do this.

glad to see this head to head! thanks. the bradley 2 is one the way and the kapara is well, stunning. i don't see them as competitors, just stablemates who are extremely complimentary. a little saving up is required at this time to unite the two, but planning is afoot, and your reviews are catalytic!

Thanks for doing this video. I think the Kapara should be the clear winner and should be in the running for the best production knife made in the last year. It is way more than just a food prep knife. Mine came sharper from the factory than almost any knife I own. I have the newer CQI version that Spyderco released in the last few months, and it completely drops shut right out of the box. Apparently Spyderco added a bushing that makes it have this action.

I expected to love the Kapara more than the GB2, but it ended up being the other way around (and I do prefer wire clips and full flat grinds generally)

Both on my wantlist, but the Kapara has priority. Although the Gayle Bradley looks cooler to me, the Kapara seems better in every other way. You're a lucky bastard for having both of these already👊

I’m a big Spyderco fan, but something about the GB2 just doesn’t do it for me. The Kapara on the other hand is making me forget about other knives. Seriously; knives I once loved are going to be for sale because the Kapara has changed my perspectives.

Hmmmm... have toyed with the idea of a GB2...but I have 2 PM2’s and a Sage 5 and am not really a Spydie nutjob😬 I dismissed the Kapara at 1st sight..and mentally moved on..but your comparison has me intrigued with it. LOVE the deep red backspacer, the wire clip, the rich CF scales, the Ti pivot and especially, the light weight! The overall design & look of the handle is exceptional. The price and lack of gymping are definitely negatives. If I come across an opportunity of one with a substantial sale I might be tempted. I don't mind S30VN..but the price should be lower.

Great video. I really enjoyed this one. I was rooting for the Kapara because I love it and I’m Australian 🇦🇺 One of the best things about the Kapara is how small and well it carries. I prefer knives with a closed length of 3.75-4.25”. I brought the Kapara to support Alistair and an Aussie design but I really do love it. It looks huge in my hand but it doesn’t feel it. Very well designed and I’m so glad Spyderco used the wire clip. I would put a wire clip on every one of my knives if I could.

If the Gayle Bradley II had a BB or compression-lock and a sabre-grind instead of the hollow grind it'd be my EDC knife but the liner-lock and hollow-grind just make it something i couldn't stand. The lines and the feel in hand are amazing (or would have been after I made some micarta scales for it) but I just ended up selling it because of the lock and grind. After 40+ years of collecting knives I will never buy another liner-lock and I HATE hollow-grinds on anything but maybe a straight-razor.

Disagree on the value S30V you can sharpen on the fly and it's stainless. In spyderco does a pretty good job with it. M4 on a fix blade..sure.
@tomr3641
@tomr3641 5 лет назад
I enjoy these shootouts, but occasionally see something I wonder about. In this case your preference for the M4 steel is curious. The GB2 was designed by Mr. Bradley who competes in cutting competitions that are very challenging to knife blades - way more challenging than the majority of work an EDC folder will ever see. That M4 rusts a bit is immaterial in that world. In designing the GB and GB2 folders for Spyderco it was quite clear he wanted to bring attributes to that knife from his favored game, for those people that use their knives in a comparable way. The Kapara on the other hand, we're told was fashioned with a food prep mission in mind. Therefore M4 is a poor choice in a steel intended to be used in wet, acidic conditions. While we might have wished for something more "exotic," (M390, et al, S90V, etc.), iIn this case, given the mission, don't you think the S30V choice was an equally good one given the differences in knife design and intended use?

Not for $188.
@tomr3641
@tomr3641 5 лет назад
Yeabut isn't that covered in the value category? Adding a subjective $ value for blade in the blade section, compounds the effect of price in the final - skews result

The Kapara seems to be the Spyderco knife I´ve been waiting for to be designed - concerning blade shape, grind, handle shape and carryability (slimness in the pocket). Unlike many others I´d like to see kind of a "lower quality" or "budget" Kapara: Exact same blade and handle shape, but ideally FRN scales, a backlock and a standard pocket clip, coming in below USD 100; Even VG 10 would be ok, though I prefer S 30V; That would be the perfect "Endura 5" imho. And I´d most certainly own both the current "higher end" Kapara and the (fictional) cheaper one as a beater...

Stretch?
@wartstein8814
@wartstein8814 5 лет назад
@@dantem5228 Thanks for your thougtfull suggestion! Actually I do own the Stretch one (discontinued) and like it quite a lot; Nevertheless for me personally it still has some minor flaws which the Kapara seems not to have; First: When cutting on a flat surface both with Stretch or Endura, you cannot make use of the whole length of the cutting edge, cause that guard and the Ricasso are coming into the way - not so with the Kapara, I assume Second: What I like in the Endura or Stretch is the fact, that both do not sacrifice too much of the cutting edge for a choil or Ricasso; generally I like choils, but beeing mostly located in the handle, not in the blade; The Kapara looks to be even more designed like this than the Endura or Stretch; By the way, concerning the Stretch: I think the current Stretch two is a step down; Overall longer than the Stretch one, nevertheless less cutting edge and more of the choil in the blade, not the handle ;So I am quite happy I got my hands on one of the last Stretch ONEs that were available...also has a better handle shape imho due to that "parrot beak" on the rear end (which the Stretch two does not feature any more)

I do not expect these knives compete in the same market. As far as value, it depends on what matters, as each blade steel has strengths and weaknesses in different areas. With the large number of Ganzo carbon fiber stickered folders, it is just a reminder that it is for cheap knives that aspire to look like more. I would tolerate it on the GB2, and getting a superior blade for a lower price makes it simple. There is also something about a designer that excels in competition.

I picked up the Kapara & apparently it has sold out nearly everywhere which I hope ensures we will see an sprint or an exclusive run w/ higher end steels.

Still waiting for my Kapara, so I´d like to ask: There is one guy at the Spyderco Forum who compares cardboard cutting with the Kapara vs with the PM2: He concludes that it works way more effortless with the PM2; Did you experience any flaws in cardboardcutting with the Kapara? It should be a very good slicer by its specs, but maybe the handle is to slim to transfer enough force in harder cutting tests? Though I cannot imagine so; Guess the guy used different technics or grips while cutting with the Kapara vs the PM2
