I have started recommending this one the most to people who don’t know Spyderco. This knife is exceptional.

It really is! And I think you’re onto something, it’s quality is more apparent than other knives to people who aren’t deep into the hobby.

having owned many knives, i think this is one of the best. The only thing I don't like initially is the lock, but now it has grown on me. I find it very useful, during covid, it's come in handy at the park, eating out to cut food, and open containers, mail, and having ready for riff raff.

I own a lot of Spyderco knives. The smock finds its way into my pocket above pretty much all others. It has the best action of any Spyderco. I wish Spyderco would adopt the button compression lock on more knives. It’s simply the best.

The Kapara is the shining gem of my modest collection and I really share your enthusiasm. The only thing I don't find perfect about this knife is the limited access to the compression lock on that skinny handle. I think the same design features that make it more pocket-friendly than the PM2 or even the Para 3 also make the Kapara less fidget-friendly - at least to my hand that is. Despite the unbelievably smooth action (CQI version) I don't enjoy playing around with this knife all that much because disengaging the compression lock feels a bit uncomfortable after a couple of flicks. As for the blade steel - I feel just like you, except that I would love to see LC200N because of the focus on food prep.
@beardedgear
@beardedgear 4 года назад
Lc200n would be an awesome steel for this knife! And I don’t have any issues fidgeting with it, but you’re right, every hand is different.

Great to hear your thoughts on the Kapara.. My original prototype has also opened plenty of kids toys packaging. Hopefully another batch will come out soon as I think you might have some trouble getting that one back from your brother :D

Alistair, just ordered one from eBay today, talk about `late to the party‘ but I just have to support the Aussie knife makers. Funnily enough I couldn’t get one from Australia but had to get it from the states and yeah, I did pay a little extra for it but I don’t mind and managed to snag a cqi version so I was happy 👍😄

Great video! As I am sure you now know Spyderco and DLT teamed up for a cpm-20cv exclusive. They sold out in one day which was a bummer but I picked up a new one being sold second hand for only a slight price increase to cover shipping. I love the knife. It knocked my Benchmade 535 and 940 out of my pocket for the time being. My one dislike is the red backspacer. Just a person preference thing. I see the designer sells backspacers on his site but he out out of blue right now which is the color I prefer. As soon as blue is back in stock and I get it this knife will be perfect. All the best. Keep up the good work.

Alistair Phillips knocked this unique design out of the park. And Spyderco's rendering of his design is excellent. Blade shape, grind, and the 3D/radiused smooth satin carbon fiber scales are super. It is one of Spyderco's best overall designs. Can't argue with the PM2 as a "mule" utility blade for various steels (flat G10 handles aren't my favorite), and the Shaman is great ergonomically if a bit heavy weight-wise (but's it's a medium-heavy-duty design overall). The two Slysz designs are great also (Bowie, SpydieChef). I think this one will stand the test of time... so do hope for a more premium steel at some point (S110V or Magnacut would be my first two choices).

I just got one of these and I was pleasantly surprised that it matches or beats my gayle bradley 2 in terms of performance. I'd kill for a gb2 with the handle and lock off a kapara though. Something about the shape of the gb2 blade looks nice to me and the m4 is hard to beat for me personally.

This was a fun video. It IS that good. I would love a K390 Kapara BUT I do like the s30v because I'm not afraid to use it. An exclusive K390 would be too rare of a piece for me to want to use... THOUGH my K390 PM2 gets used.

I like the tiwan Spydercos the best 👍 Talk amongst spydy fans say the tiwan factory does the best fit and finish. I tend to agree with that. I just picked up the kapara, clay 3.5, and a Gayle Bradley 2, great blades. Makes six Spydercos for me.

If you could only have one Spyderco, Kapara or Caribbean? Also, which cuts smoother-easier? Do the Caribbeans have a difference on blade geometry-cutting-slicing performance? I'm either the Kapara or the Caribbean sheepsfoot. I can only get 1 for many reasons and it will be my 1st quality folder ever, so any help would be much appriciated!! Thanks in advance

Spot on review... once again. I am glad you realized that Kapara is not only beautifully crafted but also an awesome user. I tell you, Taichung made spydies are superior to the Golden made ones. Thinner behind the edge( Golden spydies are ground thick behind the edge ) and their fit and finish are impecable. The Slysz Bowie is the best Spyderco ever made ... at least so far. I was sad to hear you let your Sage go. I wonder why ?!

@toddstamos89

I’d rather keep the carbon fiber scales in place of the G10. S30v is becoming underrated. It’s not 20cv, but it’s still high grade. It’s like having a car that goes 250 (s30v) compared to one that goes 280 mph (20cv). Going to work on highways that have speed limits of 70 mph, how much speed is useful? However, I’d like to get there in style. So the 30cv with the beautiful carbon fiber is far preferable in my opinion. Now put the carbon fiber with the 20cv, charge a little bit more, and I’m a buyer!

Well, you've done it! You've convinced me I need to buy one of the ugliest knives I think spyderco has ever made! I have a theory, I think its ease of use, its intuitive nature, as you say, is related to how much the blade shape, resembles the human finger. I truly enjoyed how passionate your review of this knife was! It made me subscribe. And have no doubt, I will be getting a katara!

Both are great knives, I personally like the Kapara better. The winning feature of the chef is the stainlessness though so if that moves the needle for you then go with that one. I prefer the ergos and carry on the Kapara though.
@AlexanderSLeBlanc

Bearded Gear that does make it tough, as the rust proof aspect is a huge draw for me, though I like the design of the Kapara better. I’d love to have a rust proof Kapara with easier access to disengage the compression lock. Alas it seems there is no perfect knife out there for me :/
@shadeshiest22
@shadeshiest22 4 года назад
Alexander LeBlanc s30v is BOMB proof enough, I have a throw away 9yro pm2 in s30v that I’ve beat to hell, cut EVERY FOOD/FRUIT/VEG, meat ITEM possible, and NEVER cleaned it other than a random wipe on a pant leg, or a shake off in a river, and it’s NEVER even started to pit, rust, or patina... even used it at the beach salt water fishing cutting baits(but DID rinse it and wipe clean after every day at the beach) and it’s perfectly fine. Kapara is all I’ve carried since it came out, it’s hands down the best spyderco I own for edc and I have over 10 different spydercos. To me S30v is the best all around edc steel, not crazy expensive, stainless enough, and can actually touch up easy with just a strop...
