I’m glad I spontaneously bought a blacked out PM3 LW in BD1N. Weighs as much as pocket lint with a crazy sharp edge that can easily be sharpened. Looks badass too. So different from my manix, I love it.

I have a large collection of Benchmade, spyderco, ZT etc.. and this is one of my top 3 knives that I carry daily. The G-10 version is okay , but the lightweight is one of my favorites in any budget, the FRN handle and all

The thing I love most about BD1N is that I can sharpen it on my shapton glass stones. Most “decent” pocket knife steels just can’t be effectively sharpened on those things....too much vanadium. It’s a shame because they’re my favorite stones. Even S30v, you *really* need to be using diamonds for the most part. But BD1N takes a beautiful, aggressive edge quickly on those stones.

I can attest to this steel being very easy to bring back to life with stropping. After a day of mixed use where my edge no longer slices paper I can usually just strop down from 15 strokes per side and my edge is back. That said, it doesn’t have amazing stamina when doing prolonged carboard box cutting. A couple decently sized doubled walled cardboard boxes usually does it in. For lighter use like food prep and opening packages it has more than enough stamina.

Yeah the inverse of ease of sharpening is lower edge retention on abrasive media. Sometimes i think those who claim that fine grained low carbide steels that are easy to sharpen can last as long as S30V arent being honest with themselves. We love to support the underdog but the reality is vanadium carbides generally hold up better than matrix strength and anfew chromium carbides alone

Great vid I think I read that spyderco is phasing out all bd1 even in the Byrd and putting bd1n in the raven and crow I think. That would make them an incredible buy.

@ Nick Kettle... BD1N in Spyderco / Byrd's Chinese production offerings? Not happening, Nick. Not in an as yet foreseeable future. I know where you saw that, but your information is over a year out of date. Sal has more recently posted that they have been unable as yet to assure proper and consistent heat treats or quenches for BD1N among their Chinese factory associates. Furthermore, Sal also noted explicitly that offering BD1 as an upgrade to 8CR13 has not worked out the way they would have liked in the 'marketplace' -- their core customers for these models have demonstrated a reluctance to pony up the cost of the BD1 upgrade, as it stands (Polestar, Alcyone, for example). Many enthusiasts following these sorts of videos have a hard time getting it through their heads that everyone does *not* want what *they* want -- not even close, in most cases. But unwarranted presumption may run a bit rampant among enthusiast types not too savvy about the business side of manufacturing and egged on by more hype-laden channels than *this* practically minded exception! Stand back, take a deep breath, and think it through for yourself. There is a reason folks love their Swiss Army knives and Cold Steel 'Lite' fixed blade models, me included... even speaking as a knife steel nerd! "Horses for courses", Nick. I myself was hoping, very speculatively, to see BD1N in a Byrd Starling 2 before ages passed after reading Sal's earlier, rather encouraging comments in the Forum; but here in the real world, the U.S. made UKPK at just under double the cost of the Starling 2 is plainly the only realistic option for a slip joint like that in BD1N (but that model's been notably well priced domestically, I observe). FYI.

I want a lightweight Para3 but I don't know if, nicer blue scales appart, it is worth the extra money to buy a SPY27 version over the BD1N. It seems both must be easy to resharp (no problems with my Lansky diamond hones) and just strop back, which I consider important for EDC. I have harder premium steels in bigger blades, I don't want a CPM S110V, Maxamet or even CPM S45VN Para 3 G10 versions.

@@Outpost_76 what’s your opinion between bd1n and the s110v I’ve got a ukpk in both and I always have an argument to what I should carry for edc. I had do you think is better I like wet stones more than diamond so I’m tending to go for the bd1n for ease

I want just the knife that I can carry and know I can rely on it like I say I have both but if I carry the bd1n I always feel like I’m under prepared when there’s a top spec knife sat there but if I carry the s110v I always stress about using it because I’ll have to sharpen it still only fresh with the s110v so haven’t even used the factory grind yet I bought by accident and now trying to think if I should keep it or stick with the one I’ve had a while
