This week Casey and Brent have a good old fashioned hobby talk. Lots of new things going on, some hot tips about masking tape, a little news about Warhammer The Old World. Grab out your brushes, settle in and hang out with us as we just talk about the hobby!

That tape tip is going to be huge when I try to paint a two-tone checked cloak.

I started working on a printed orc army for AoS and 40k and decided I'd use square bases for it. No real reason why, I just sort of decided I wanted to have one army where everything is on squares instead of rounds, so here we are. A lot of the guys are based to go up or down uneven, rocky hills and something about the shape just makes it easier to create bases with differing levels of elevation and find the "golden angle". I think I actually prefer square bases now, at least when going for an intricate basing scheme.

The only game I can think of where the scale decreased over time would be heroscape, which was at 32mm/28 mm scale and went down to 25 mm scale because they began to repurpose D&D minis for sculpts instead of making new ones as a cost saving measure.

1:18 Don't worry about Casey. Dutch names are difficult to pronounce in English. Phonetically it's closer to "Wikert" (as in commander Riker 😉). Very happy to help btw ❤!

So Catalyst Games Lab does a 28mm Battletech game at some conventions so the idea of larger scale than normal is possible. Also, there are tape measures that have 16 inches marked for wall studs. If you marked the half way spots then that would give you an 8 inch unit instead of a full 12 inch unit.

Regarding bases and acquiring them: if you have a filament 3D printer you can make your own on demand. They require minimal processing, and with a nice thick coat of paint on the rim (that you want anyway) no one can tell the difference. You can also resin print them. Bit wasteful for a plain base, with resin costs, but for sculpted special bases resin printers are dope.

Regarding inverse scale creep, it's the lord of the rings range. Most of the initial ones were all metal before moving to plastics, and those first run of plastics were all way smaller than the metals (e.g. look at metal numenorean spearmen vs the plastic numenorean swordmen) They're since gone back uo and the newest stuff is a kind of happy medium between them all so once they're all jumbled together it looks legit.

I'm subbed to stormbringer in the UK- I love it, great deal and the extras are cool, plus there's a bunch of oop underworlds warbands in! First 20 or so issues are basically Dominion so I would possibly reconsider the sub until after then if you have loads of boxes. One thing I'd be aware of is there's a bunch of opt out crap like binders or random models (ogre tyrant and skaven warplock bombardier so far) that they may squeeze onto your sub but you can always return/cancel them. In the UK it works out at 40 pounds for each premium kit (Krondys, big ork wyvern thing, kharadron and troggoths) which is better than half price but may be different in dollars. Love the podcast btw, you guys are motivating me to lose weight and paint more as I listen whilst running or painting- BIG LOVE!

Sails of Glory scale were smaller in the last release. I should write latest, but I don’t have any hope anymore.

Action figure scale has been around for a bit. Shadowrun Duels was a neat idea that just didn't take off. I would have loved a 3 3/4" scaled minis game. The hammer game is an amusing idea. But the shrapnel from such a thing would be problematic. But if you made molds to make figures out of modeling clay and some quick craft paint and took a rubber mallet to 'em there would be a lot less danger and plenty of carnage.

Seems like a scaled up Shatterpoint like rule set would be pretty fun to play with 4X sized models or action figures.

I don't really have a clear preference, so I go interchangeably between round and and square bases. My main hope for the Old World is that it creates an excuse to make updated models for some factions, while also bringing back some of the ones that have been shelved earlier. I'm tempted to get another box of Bretonnian Men-at-arms, since the one I bought a decade ago has been spent. I might also buy a box of the regular troops for Cities of Sigmar, because the aesthetics are a nice middle-ground between Empire and Bretonnia. I see lots of potential with kitbashing them.

Old world doesn’t really feel like something that will last tbh. Honestly if I want to play rank and flank these days I’d probably play conquest especially since many WHFB models are super old but will be relevant in the game according to GW

Personally i prefer round bases, but even back in Fantasy I played BoC so the skirmish movement was more my speed. My hot take is I don't think Old World is going to have the legs its being hyped for. There is a good reason fantasy died off in favor of AOS and if you really want rank and flank, there are better modern games out now.

I wanted to be excited for the release of The Old World. But they’re already showing off models they’re going to release in resin. No thanks, not interested in buying GW resin models.
