This week Casey and Brent talk about some hobby stuff they have been up to. Casey has some things to say about Mantic and the Veermyn...it was great, the conversation, not the Veermyn. In all honesty, I hope it's the box I got because Mantic can clearly do better than this.

Mantic has gone through a number of manufacturers in the last little bit. I would be interested to see if the sprues Casey got are marked 'made in Poland' since they did change over to Archon Studios relatively recently. The kits coming out from that partnership have gotten pretty good reviews - possibly he just got an older box.

I just painted those Veer Myn from Mantic 2 player starter Battle for Exham. So I guess the models are for me, someone who wants to play with painted minis without needing to take out a second mortgage. That looks like an old box btw.

Totally makes sense, and maybe I got a bad box. There are parts that I literally can't even fit onto some of the models because the plastic is mashed together so tight, it's super weird.

Just so you know, the sound of Gordon purring around 26:00 got me to swap over from the podcast to the video cast. I needed to see the baby.

I've built and painted some of Mantic's sci-fi models (the space orcs, space dwarfs and space army guys) and I think they're OK. They're definitely a notch or two below modern GW kits, but stack up nicely compared to any plastic multi-part kits GW put out prior to circa 2006. I think the fact that GW can charge a premium compared to many other companies is because, not only is their IP very popular, their model kits are just straight up amazing compared to most of their competitors, and as you guys touch on here, most people don't want to spend a lot of time painting miniatures with weird poses, soft details and subpar quality control. If I have to spend twice as much to get a model that is 20% nicer, that might be worth it if I'm going to be spending a good amount of time painting it.

Did you check if Mantic had online build instructions? I dont like it, but thats what Wyrd does for Malifaux, and AMG does for Shatterpoint.

I have the Veer Myn models. For my tunnel runner vehicles they were all solid plastic - not at all rubbery like how you describe the ones you have. Sounds like it would be worth getting in touch with Mantic about them to be honest. Regarding instructions, yeah it has been well known that their products for many years did not come with build instructions. More recent things, like their Deadzone box have basic build instructions for the models inside.

I might need to talk to them because it seems really weird that these would have that many issues, especially seeing how many people are surprised by what I said.

Definitely - be good to hear the outcome on it, and what the possible cause was. As you say, possibly a very duff batch or something.

Vallejo Primer (Black, White and Grey) are basically the best Primers out there. I live at the sea, it's wet and cold and stormy in the winter, in the summer it's super hot and arid, and under all conditions these primers work perfect. No hot water needed in the winter. Just take the can from inside the house outside and spray. Perfection.
@arandomlostsoul753
@arandomlostsoul753 6 месяцев назад
I also really like Vallejo's spray primers, but if somebody wants to use oil paint, then they should use a different primer. Vallejo's primer rubs off real easy when you put white spirits on it. Since Vallejo's primers are commonly available and reasonably priced, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if this is part of why some people say you must protect acrylic paint with a varnish before applying oil paint on top.
@quahodron2756
@quahodron2756 6 месяцев назад
@@arandomlostsoul753 Interesting. I didn't know/noticed that. Thx for sharing. I regularly use oil washes on painted models with a Vallejo primer coat underneath and never had the slightest issues.

@@quahodron2756 Interesting. In your experience, do you cover the model entirely with acrylic paint first or is it fine even with some of the primer showing?

I pick my primer color depending on what I am painting. But yeah, all my primer comes from big box stores. My favorite used to be the Kmart house brand 'Fresh Look'. Went on smooth and thin with great coverage a tooth. And it was cheap. Less than $2 a can. Now I use whatever I can find that isn't Rustoleum. That stuff it way too thick. I prefer Krylon, but it's harder to find, and a bit more expensive. But is sprays so nice, I'll pay a couple bucks more a can. And Krylon is the best bang for the buck as far as a flat varnish to dull stuff down.

I have heard good things about Montana BLACK cans. Despite the name, there are more colors. Plenty of them! I'm pretty much 99% on airbrush priming now though, no more cans for me. I think Mantic has gone through a few different manufacturers, and I'm pretty sure the ones making the new kits are Archon Studio. The sprues have "made in Poland" on them at least. I can handle some assembly jank myself, but I can understand why it can be a detractor.But when a figure "doesn't like to take paint"... Meh.
@fimbulkron
@fimbulkron 6 месяцев назад
Wow, you got a pretty old box from Mantic. Especially their Firefight sets are a pretty old production run. And lots of the older gnarly stuff is PVC and not HIPs! All new kits are way better quality and made by archon studio in Poland! They mostly renewed the Kings of War lines lately, but starting to refresh their lines in general. But I have to ask, what should be done with their old production? Thrown away? At least you get a fair price for it. GW sells you "new" 30 years old models for $290.- and makes huge amount of profit but treats its creatives like shit!?

I have the Veer-myn miniatures but don't have any gaps. Veer-myn was also my start into tabletop so I don't get the mentioned issue. I have more issues with the GW sprues where you have too many parts for a single miniature and need very long to build a single miniature ^^

I've only used two Army Painter colour primers and while one worked great, the other turned into a sputtering mess after a single use. Then again, I've also had a primer from AK-Interactive turn into a sputtering mess quickly too. The Army Painter primers seem to have a mixed reputation.

Dont normally comment on videos but i have to say that the bashing of the veer myn models almost made me turn off the podcast.... Ive put hundreds of those models together and had been looking forward to your feedback. For a painting competition model the detail isnt great. But for a table top wargame theyre fine. This felt like you wanted latest gw quality minis for half the price and were surprised your experience didnt match up....

It's not that I was expecting them to be the highest quality, but I feel like there are smaller companies that have figured out these issues. The warping on the plastic seems like a manufacturing issue more than anything, and I did express that I hope it's just the box I got and not every model they produce. I've seriously heard great things about Mantic for a long time, so when I finally took the plunge I just felt let down. I want them to succeed, but I also have to be honest with the experience I've had so far. My opinions are certainly not a personal attack, or trying to take anything away from anybody who enjoys these minis. If you have had a better experience then that's amazing, mine has just been less than great.
@toribrown3871
@toribrown3871 5 месяцев назад
@@PaintBravelyThePodcastgotta agree with you on this tbh. Stuff like warping can really ruin the fun of building and painting, and suggests that something at some point of the casting process is going wrong. Nothing wrong with casts not being detailed, or having some mould lines, but warping is just no fun.
