In this film I prepare COD baits in advance of a shore fishing trip and vacuum pack using my favourite vacuum packing machine.
The Sous Vide may not be the budget option but it is feature packed and very good at processing wet, soft or odd shaped baits for the sea angler.

Have started doing this myself (although havent invested in a vacuum packer just yet). Must admit, i am a bit jealous of you there though, wish i had a garage to convert into my own little man-cave. Workbench for tinkering, fishing gear and proper sized bait freezer (only have a little one in the conservatory atm), make myself right at home for the evening👌 Liking the wood burner too, made my own burner for the patio a couple of years ago, am a welder by trade so made perfect sense.
@seaangling
@seaangling 11 месяцев назад
Both my brother and myself have been welder/fabricators but the burner was all my brothers work who made it for me including the double skin chimney and witches hat on top. I have rebuilt cars in the workshop many years ago but it is a fishing workshop now. I have considered building a rig/rod room but the workshop is fine for now. I’ll be doing more workshop filming through the winter.

I've also got into the habit of preparing baits in the same way lately and find it very convenient on the beach. I don't vacuum pack my baits though - I just use small zip lock bags with the air squeezed out. Some people think refreezing bait is a bad idea but I've never had an issue.
@seaangling
@seaangling Год назад
Preparing baits is particularly effective when splitting down larger boxes. If I part defrost a 5lb box of squid I might as well do the prep and then flat pack the smaller bags for later.

Hello my Beauty! Great to see you Mark - good video. Sorry to hear you've had the dreaded Covid. I don't tend to freeze baits as I mainly buy them frozen from the tackle emporium, but I have got a Vacuum sealer - very useful bit of Kit for freezing Steaks, chops & fish. Mine came from Lidl or Aldi (forget which) and they are a great source of supply for the roll bags (clear one side) similar to yours. Great tip about folding the top down - never thought of that! Couple of useful tips - if your Vac Pack machine doesn't have a bag cutter, those rotary paper trimmers are ideal for cutting a load of bags off the roll, and I find the Vac Pack machine works a lot better with a 'platform' in front of it so that the bag is up level with the sealing element. Looking forward to the Cod session, & sorry this comment has ended up so long! Merry Christmas to you & yours, best wishes for 2022, stay safe & well! Dave. 👍👍

I forgot to mention about the level platform bit, thanks for reminding me. I have a pice of wood that I use to make the bag level with the heater element. 👍🏻 I think people rate the one from Lidl and I’ll check out their bags when they are available. I’m sure they will be reasonably priced.

Another great video, pretty much what I do, try to keep all clean whilst bait vacuum sealing, but I didnt think of folding the opening over, nice touch thank you buddy, I keep all heads guts and scraps as I plan to make chopped squid frozen fingers to shove inside the squid body as a constant release groundbait, gotta work right? 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣
@seaangling

Don’t waste a scrap or a drop of any of it. Small strips are good for black bream, you can soak other baits in the juice and mix anything else in with any chum/ground bait you make. I like the idea of frozen fish fingers, almost like the crab cart they stuff inside finger bandage. 🤔
@TheLastMinuteAngler_JohnHewitt
@seaangling that's what I do with crab cart, I get the cart in a Chinese meal plastic tub, defrost it, seperat it into silicone molds then freeze it, hollow out squid body, pop in the frozen cart finger and elastic wrap up, lot of faffing but it works.

Excellent video Mark! I use a lidi's purchased vacuum machine, with a rolled down top like you do and I then put a rolled up piece of kitchen paper towel as the last thing before I vacuum, that way it absorbs any moisture and stops any bait fluid getting into the vacuum machine. I have also tried pre baiting onto hooks so vacuumed already on the snoods, so far that seems to work ok.

@@seaangling Hi Mark, so like I prep the bait like you do but put the bait straight onto a hook(s) then bed the hook point (s)into the bait (to stop the point perpetrating the bag) then coil up the trace place in the bag and seal in. The tissue kitchen paper towel sheets, are the thicker more absorbent type rather than very cheap kitchen rolls and this helps stop the line from being sucked out of the bag as well as absorbing any excess fluid. The cheaper vacuum machines only provide seal or vac seal hence the tissue paper as it protects the machine and I learned by experience any bait fluid into the vacuum chamber and inner works makes the machine unusable for other tasks as I've had the fragrant scent of lugworm on chicken, that didn't go down too well with the fishing permissions officer! I've not had any issues with line becoming brittle form being frozen and if you are prepping rigs by having those traces hanging form a rod rest very soon thaw out in the elements.

Hi Mark Sorry to add to complexity of the subject but one the things they add is polypropylene alcohol (anti-freeze). Info " Propylene glycol is completely soluble in water and it has the feature of dissolving many organic compounds such as fragrances, essential oils and resins and in addition, it has extremely low toxicity and is virtually harmless to the human body." So it's easy to see why they add this stuff to the mix. Anyway then add this to glycerine and then add to the XG. Finally when blended add to the blended fish attraction and goob or smear onto the scourer pad. What I'll do is get a really strong scent trail going and see what happens.
@seaangling
@seaangling 2 года назад
I’m a little confused about the scourer pad?
@alanharmsworth7638
@alanharmsworth7638 2 года назад
Hi Mark. Sorry about that. They are small pads about six inches by four by a quarter inch thick. They are a common item used in kitchens to scrub dirty pans etc. They are ideal to cut up big enough for a reasonable, not tight, fit into a burley cage. Talk to the the "Lady Who Knows" who will immediately know what I mean. The pieces are ideal for holding the mix you smear onto pad which is then released into the water column. Given that nearly everything on the market these days is all about scent I think we will have a winner when we iron out the details. About the only reason you now have the info I've gathered up is because you have helped so many people along the way to better fishing including myself. If I had your email address I could send you small pix which may be better to understand than my clumsy attempts here. This is mine: ag.harmsworth@optusnet.com.au

Hi Mark Just had another viewing of this video. As usual there are a couple of points which raise a query in my mind. The first is what to do with all of the cut off bits of bait. I know you can vac pac them but they can be put to good use as ground bait/burley/chum (depending where you live in the world). Another point is why are burley cages (aka swim feeders as I used to call them) not used with the rigs. It would seem to me that the pennell type rigs are ideal to add a burley cage. You could blitz the bait bits and use a filler to make a stiffer mix. Using this in the burley cage would place the burley right where the hook is. Burley is a proven fish attractant so why not use it.
@seaangling
@seaangling 2 года назад
The tidal run will wash the burley away from the bait and detract from forming a scent trail. The bait is anchored in a position by the weight, the burley would disperse with the tidal run. From a boat it is possible to lower a bag or use a bait dropper. From the shore it is possible to bury bait at low tide. All things worth considering and I love the idea of a bait or burley cage. The small trimmings are used for bream baits.
@alanharmsworth7638
@alanharmsworth7638 2 года назад
@@seaangling You have already showed us how to use the stainless welding rod to form bait needles. It's only a short step to form a burley cage by winding the welding rod around, say, a 25mm rod forming the cage. You can extend it buy pulling and then using the ends of the welding rod to form into a hook or an eye. This would then clip between the weight and the splash down clip. As for the bait washing away that can happen but if you make the burley (you get a handful and squeeze it in between the burley cage) firm enough I found that it takes some time to wash through the cage wire. Just my thoughts Mark.

Hi Mark While we're on the subject of bait presentation here's a couple of things I've picked up on. Nothing new under the sun just a bit of research in odd places. First if you're preparing your own stick on gel like Pro Cure it's no use using gelatine/geletin to thicken the goo (which is what many use when making up their own goo). Why? Because gelatine is insoluble in water. The nice scent remains locked up in the goo or your bait and will not be released. Use instead another thickener called xanthum gum. Soluble in water and doesn't degrade the scent. Look it up if you want further info. Second. Don't use oil, (tuna or any other type) in your goo or burley. A sacred cow this one which will make carp fishers go red in the face. Why? Because oil floats to the surface and floats away above the water column missing the fish which may be further down or on the bottom. Make up your own goo using water soluble xanthum gum (there is another alternative but xanthum is in common use ) which is what Barkley use for their Gulp. Again don't take my word for it - look it up . Cheers Alan H
@seaangling
@seaangling 2 года назад
I’ve had some Xanthum gum delivered so will be experimenting with that to see how it performs. What are you mixing with the gum to add the scent as everything from a mackerel or squid is oily?
@alanharmsworth7638
@alanharmsworth7638 2 года назад
I Mark Nice to hear from you. I've tracked down the actual formula for Berkley Gulp Alive recharge. This is an extract from the Berkley formula U.S. Patent 5827551. " When bulky or general attractants, such as powdered fish meal, are used in the present formulation, they are generally present in an amount of at least about 5% of the total formulation. Broadly, formulation of the present invention containing amounts of attractant in the range of between about 0.1-80% of the total formulation have been found to be effective in luring aquatic life. Preferred formulations for the present fish attractants comprise about 50-80% petrolatum, 10-30% water soluble delivery agent, 1-10% thickening agent, and 0.01-20% attractant, and 0-20% auxiliary agents. Particularly preferred formulations include 60- 65% petrolatum jelly, 20% water soluble dispensing agent, 3-5% thickening agent, and 10-12% water soluble attractants and other ingredients. The particular ingredients of the attractant formulation can be blended in any manner that produces a stable water-in-oil emulsion. If the thickening agent is a solid at room temperature and meltable, that component may be heated until a liquid and mixed with the other components at high speed until a creamy, stable emulsion is formed. Generally, the components are mixed at room temperature by hand or with a mechanical mixer until the mixture changes from a dry, stiff mix into a smooth, creamy paste that can be readily applied to the exterior of a bait or artificial lure. " I use Xanthum Gum mixed into Glycerine. This will give a very smooth mix which will emulsify with water. I use a small amount of Gulp Alive recharge with an Asan product called Belachan. You can buy it at any Asian store. You can also blend into that mix with any other attractant such as mullet, squid etc. I get this burley into a burley cage by smearing it onto a couple of kitchen scouring pads cut to size for the burley cage. The Xanthum Gum etc is water soluble and depending on the mix (I keep it quite soft) it will disperse in the vicinity of the bait. Still very much in the trial stage but when this appalling weather stops down here I will keep in touch and let you know how it all goes. Cheers Alan
@alanharmsworth7638
@alanharmsworth7638 2 года назад
Hi Mark Berkley I use petroleum jelly (Vaseline) which is the sticky part of the formula in order to adhere to the lure. I don't use the Vaseline because I find the mix I've given you will adhere to the scouring pad and releases into the bait trail quite successfully. Cheers Alan

That channel got my attention 😍 Much easier to wave a chum bag in the shallows than spend hours digging and I’d get to wear my bikini as well.

how ever did we manage to get bait to the beach and catch fish before the vacuum bag, mmmmm news papers, thats how, in fact we used old news papers for a few things, we didnt have andrex then, you talk of all the expense and the fact you dont waste anything, yet we are told to buy a machine and plastic tube, to make endless plastic bags that we are being encouraged not to use, and please can you stop using bait elastic in front of the whole world, if you use it then do but dont broadcast it, we had the do-gooders on the beach a few years ago saying it was cruel to fish, im sure you can come up with some thing in its place, maybe do a video on elastic replacement and ask for ideas from your viewers, now im off to view your rig making video, keep up the good work
