Freezing cold and in the workshop making rigs, Mrs W has washing on the line so I'm not allowed to light the log burner.
All joking aside I thought it was time i filmed some more rig making and here is my version of the Trident Tackle pulley rig.
As with all of my rig making videos you may be able to spot fault or have an idea for improvement, please feel free to comment but in a positive way.

Always enjoy watching your vids.I found a pulley rig recently made withe the Tridents clips,which I'd seen but not used.For the time being I've already got plenty of rigs already tied up,so I'll use them up first,but obviously each to their own !!

Just invested in a few packs of these, the aero pulleys, termalinks and the kicker bait clips rather than the roto ones. Quite often use pulley rigs myself too, although when i get around to tying them i think I'll still be using beads either side of the slider👍

Just picked up fishing again after a 20 year hiatus. Just watched a trident rig set up and the versatility is incredible. Super informative video that helped knock some of that 20 year rust off my knowledge. Thanks very much. Really looking forward to seeing what else you have and want you to know you’ll be passing your knowledge onto the next generation of fishermen as I’m taking my 13 year old son on a few trips

Hi Mark. Great video and really well explained. It's the first video of yours that I've come across, so I've subscribed as I'm sure there's plenty of other great viewing. I'm just starting to fish the rough ground around the Whitby area, having not fished from the shore for 30 or so years (charter boat ownership prevents it most of the year). I like the price point of the Trident gear and have ordered some bits to get me started. Thanks for explaining in great detail.

I have been watching your channel from 2 weeks...you just got another fan...i like the way you are explaining everything and showing to public what is more efficient and easy things to do... i am looking for efficiency on my fishing time... saving time brings more fish.. if there is any apart dogfish😉... You are doing a great job , thank you for your videos and hope you will do more videos. I would like to ask for a favour?? If there is any chance to do PORTSMOUTH RIG in the future?? I use it without beads, but use a few mm of silicone tubing over the knots at either end to protect them from the pully. Works a treat, pb bullhuss of 12.2 from the rocks on a 3stranded 40lb amnesia hooklength snelled to a bronzed 6/0 did the business:)

Love the Videos, especially workshop ones! I personally think Trident tackle is amazing, its different to other brands and as you said its really competitively priced. Had no problems at all with it and like you I think the Terma links are amazing. Plus, who doesnt love the chance to do a colour coordinated rig 😉

Yet another great and informative video 👍 Having just been able to get out and try the trident bits I have, on a trip to chesil (cogdon) and the Bristol Channel (Severn beach), my feeling on the aero pulley is its a little “stiff” if a bit on sand/mud gets into the small hole, and the roto bait clip got clogged with fine sand/grit making realise a hit and miss affair. But given the benefits of cost and staying clipped during an off the ground cast I can definitely see myself using these for ruff ground venues,

Hi Mark, i have used the roto and aero pulley for about a year now. i really like them .I use them for spurdog in the deep scottish lochs clear water so no real problem with sand blocking and jamming components. i have never had the roto fail to release. I use 80 lb mono throughout . snood is about 2.5 to 3 ft long with 6 inch of biting length wire. hook sizes 4/0 to 6/0 in pennel . I do use small beads as a buffer and 3 large lumi ones above the hook. bait is squid and mackeral cocktail lashed on tightly with bait elastic. I add an oval lead link to the roto prior to tying onto the rig so i can clip on the lead easily. I set the wires on the lead very tightly and as the spur runs and pulls the slack in the pulley rig it acts like a boltrig when it hits the end of the slack and generally hooks the fish right in the lips. i have been out 3 times this month and in good conditions managed 17 spurdog 4 thornbacks 2 codling , 2 lsd and 2 whiting. 4 spurs were double figures and several more 8 to 9 lbs I had my pb spur of 15lbs 2 oz 2 weeks ago. i find the aero pulley does not kink the rig body after a fish or two. unlike with a pulley bead or large swivel 1/0 which i used to use. In fact my repeat order from trident arrived 2 days ago so i do rate them and they stand up to big fish in deep water. keep up the good work GG

Gareth, that was an interesting read and good to hear honest articulated feedback. I hadn’t considered the bolt rig aspect but it makes sense and sounds like it would work well for our southern smooth hound fishing. I haven’t caught a Scottish spur dog yet but I’m working on it. 😉

@@seaangling Mark, yes it would work for smoothies. Although i prefer an up and over for them with long snood. We get quite a lot of smoothies now in summer months in southern scotland. If you ever want more info on spurdog in the lochs let me know . i have fished them for over 20 years from the shore . i find this time of year best , no midges and bigger fish !!

Cheers Mark..in the Bristol Channel I use pulley rigs. Shorter ones for the cod/whiting and much longer for the summer rays. On big tides I go to the up and over due to the tide race. Never used trident. I’ll give them a go👍🏻

This is the second trident pulley rig video I watched, nicely explained Mark. Could not believe the prices when I looked at the trident website, quickly ordered a set before they realised how low their prices are...lol. Even the shipping was only £2.95nor so. Can't wait to build my rigs with the components.

Especially on up and over rigs but haven't really considered trident for my pulleys... Think I still prefer imps for hook release but I'm definitely going to give terma links a try... Look a lot simpler to use

I will be doing a video on the drop down pulley next as it was requested on the channel. For that I will be using Gemini tackle. I personally use IMPs wherever possible but on the pulley rig I am converting to Rotobaits. I really like the termalink and think I have proved it in operation to my own satisfaction.

What's the thinking behind changing from imps to rotobait just on the pulley rig? Do you notice any perceivable difference?.... Interesting tho to see your comments on how design and shape of lead can impact its effectiveness.... Not something I had considered before, tho can't say I've ever had a rig come back still clipped up

I tend to use this rig in the winter and with windy/gusty conditions. The rotobait is a reliable method of holding a 4/O hook captive during the cast. I tend to use quite big baits and the combination of big bait and wind can detach from an IMP. That said I do like using IMPs.

Really good was looking at the trident bit this morning then you tubed it found your vid found very helpful so thanks and going to give them a go try your up and over rig but try a trident pulley on there instead of the crimps way and see how it goes Keep up the good video's

Had a good couple trips out lately. Used this rig but a bit longer and caught a beautiful 6lb to 6.5lb in weight(2 other fish were caught also) of the cardiff barrage.

@@seaangling it was a thornback Ray and I've found out my scales are broken and not weighing correctly they are 2lb ish out (in the bin once replaced) so it was 8 to 8.5lb. The other fish were whiting and doggies.

Morning Mark, there are some great products on the market these days and it’s always worth trying new kit. Like you I have used Trident gear and have found it to be excellent quality at a reasonable price. I still use the termalink but have moved away from the rest. The pulley seemed like an excellent idea but I found that in the Bristol Channel it twisted the rig up, I have reverted to the Gemini pulley bead and Gemini splashdown for hook release. I guess it’s down to personal choice. Great vid. Pete

So much of what we do is down to personal preference, location, conditions, species etc. I hope by showing stuff people can take the bits that is relevant to them and make use of it. Also comments like yours really help as it gives alternatives and reasons. I’ll be doing a pulley dropper using Gemini stuff next. 👍🏻

My rigs are almost identical to yours, to be honest I do much prefer the Gemini pulley bead. I couldn’t agree more on the price, certainly cheaper than Gemini and others but not cheaply made, quality products at a great price. 👍

I like making my own panels rigs and my one up one down rigs seem to work better than the pedal sometimes can be a bit snagging in some of the spots I fish I just make basic ones don't want to spend so much on tackle and it removes a lot I've never once bought a lead in my life

Great vid mate, when I make my pulley rigs I normally tie the termalink on the rig body first then measure out using the arms apart method then cut my line

I love the pully rig but have gone off the airo pully!!! I find it slows the dropping of the snood too slowly and it tends to get tangled up. Much prefer the gemini pully or just a standard pully beed. Love the other trident gear (roto bait, terma links) bigtime.

The aero pulley was always meant as a rough ground pulley and the Dynaform acting as the free flowing version for lighter ground. I must admit that if given the choice I always reach for the Gemini pulley bead.

Hi Mark great vid. I'm a great fan of the pulley rig. I've been making these with the Gemini pulley bead and splash down lead. I've recently ordered some Trident kit and am eager to try it out. I particularly value the hint about using a narrow ended sinker over a flat back type like the Gemini splash down. I can see the potential for the rota clip to be impaired.

Hi Peter, I am a big fan of the Gemini pulley bead and it is the core feature of my favourite rig which is the up and over using the Gemini pulley and the IMP. I realise most of what I do is well known by everyone but one little nugget picked out of it all can sometimes help. 👍🏻

@@seaangling Thanks Mark. I also like the idea of the changeable hook snood. I normally fish two rods with different rigs and normally hang baited rigs on my tripod. Changeable hook snoods look great. Like you I also like the up and over. I make the version that incorporates a short running ledger. I’m going to try a termalink changeable snood on that. Do you think the termalink would work on a running ledger.

The breakaway proper pulley does away with the pulley bead . Clips directly onto your shockleader ,

@@seaangling Ireland is not listed when putting in delivery address as I found out after trying to place order yesterday .I went back to their Home page ,States that they have had issues with posting to Ireland (Since last February but no update since then(. so it applies to all their products. I dont think its a customs problem because they offer Courier service,, if you want to pay extra £16 ..I get a lot of online items from UK and no issues ,, I think if value is over £150 ,then there is duty but other than that a VAT rate of 23% applies instead UK Vat .And to be fair "An Post" ,national postal service , is very reliable .I had emailed to see if there was any update after 6 months but no reply two weeks on .

My trident kit arived today and I am very impressed with it. Can't wait to use it on sunday😀 only thing I do different is that I put a termalink on both ends and a swivel on my snod.

A swivel on the shockleader is a very popular way to go and the Gemini stainless swivels at 140lb are very compact and last well. The termalink is enclosed which reduces the chance of snagging. All round a good option if the bulk doesn’t bother you.

Great vid yet again , one question , why do use heavier hook snood than you use on your main line , sure I a snagged situation the main line being the weakest will be the first to break ? .

Correct, but where I fish tends to be clean ground and the line strength is for rays/hounds that can be abrasive.

I’m not use to fishing that type of ground, we don’t even need weak links here. It is a strong rig that with a little tweaking would do what you need.

Like an upside-down pully/up and over. With the hooklength up and over one of their spring/clips and back down to the roto bait release which is mounted onto the streamlined pully. Works really well :)

The termalink has fitted through every rod ring I have so far and I was sold when it held bringing in a shore caught skate. If it can manage that everything else is easy.

Great video Mark I just don't like the Trident pulley, everything else they make i use. I fish the Solent like yourself and the pulley is just a magnet for weed.

The majority of my fishing this year has been with the up and over rig which is covered on another video, I have found times when the pulley has been useful. Mainly when fishing Gosport and Gilkicker when the “tings” are ravenous.

Unsure if comments/questions on old vids are read but I will givr it a go. Built a few of your rigs now (great tutorials btw) and caught my 1st smoothhound yesterday. It was on the trident pullley rig. However my question is this. On each reel in the snood was well and truelly twisted around thr rig body. Concerned it may not release correctly on the cast. Any advice to stop this? TIA.

Were you using the aero pulley or the dyna form? Was there a swivel between pulley and shock leader? It could have been twisting during retrieval.

Hi Mark.Have you ever tried circle hooks using pulley rigs? If so,what do you think about it?

I have used circle hooks and usually use them for dressing the top of the bait when using a pennel setup. For rays and sharks the circle gives a nice corner of the mouth hook up. 👍🏻

Great vid Mark well done, So after a few years away from sea fishing I'm drawn back to it again. So time to catch up on all the new tackle like Trident.. Where have I been hiding lol. So spent the day doing some research and watching loads of RU-vid vids. I really like the look of the New to me Trident bits - but Old to you lot now. One question with there pulleys is there any more friction as its kinda a figure 8, do you lose bite detection ore is it not so noticeable?.

I haven’t noticed a significant loss in bite detection and the line does cross itself. That bit of friction can help to hold the weight up if fishing over rough ground. I haven’t had a failure because of it despite how it looks.

Is there any specific reason why I can't pass the line through the aero pulley just once instead of the cross over. I don't use pulley rigs very often probably only when my son take me to the Chesil. (Going over is easy but coming back I struggle) or the Bristol channel.

If you only want a single pass pulley without the cross over I would recommend the Gemini pulley bead. It would come down to personal preference and there are many different options for a pulley bead or even a simple swivel in its place.

@@seaangling I did read that the reason for the Trident pulley having the cross-over is that once you have a fish on and the pulley has lifted the lead up towwards the main line, the little bit of friction from the cross-over helps prevent the lead falling back down if your line goes slack. I hope I made sense of that!

It is there to act as a transition between the aero pulley and the terma link at the end of my mainline. You could replace the terma link with a swivel and clip straight onto that.

@@seaangling I just go terma link to aropully one less component to go wrong yes I know its a 100lb swivel so not much chance of breaking that's why the question was it to stop twisting, as the trident tack is designed to all clip on to one another

Would using circle hooks make any difference negatively when clipping up?

The shape wouldn’t but the thickness of wire might. Circle hooks tend to be slightly thicker than standard “J” shaped.

It wouldn’t hurt to try circle hooks if that is your preference and have some J hooks available if it doesn’t.

Not at all, the load is shared as it is doubled up with the rig body.

That's plane wrong, the weakest link is the hook length. Which is why as a general rule 10lb per oz of lead. If your happy risking everyone arnd you when casting. Carry on.

The general rule is 10lb per oz of lead plus 10lb safety factor. I’m not risking anyone’s safety and if you do the calculations you will see the load is not all on the hook snood. The pulley rig is a very safe compact casting rig which helps by raising the weight when recovering a fish.

I'm well aware how a pully rig works. Fact is you tied it wrong. Zero load should be on the hook length or what's the point I using a higher brake strain.for the rig body. " surely you grasp the concept of weakest link in the chain ".How you can think it's shared load is beyond me. It's easier if you use a breakaway impact shield as you can adjust to suit the hook length your using. I wish you the best of luck.

The Trident Pully is flawed, I think all of thier other products are fantstic and genuinly better than equivilent products on the merket. I have used the pully plenty of times and can confirm that sand abbration does damage your line where the pully functions. I have also reeled in to find small item of debis in the pully preventing free movmnet of line through the component. Its that simple.

All interesting feedback from another user. I tend to fish mostly from shingle beaches but do visit Sandy ones from time to time so I haven’t witnessed what you describe. I can see the effect it would have though. The Aero pulley isn’t my preferred choice but one that I will continue to use when conditions permit.

If you fish the Bristol channel make your pully rigs a lot smaller mate with smaller components if not you will lose the lot and rotten bottom rigs mark
