SRAM Eagle "Transmission" & Stealth Brakes Review - Electronic MTB Drivetrain Redefined

The new SRAM Eagle Transmission is an innovative mountain bike drivetrain that can truly change the way you ride a mountain bike. Over the years, several MTB innovations come to mind that also accomplish this; the dropper post, the 1x drivetrain, and modern geometry for example. All things considered, we think SRAM's Eagle Transmission is worthy of joining that list of innovations as well. A bold claim, no doubt. However, the way the Eagle Transmission is able to shift quickly and smoothly despite being downright abused is absolutely uncanny, which can provide you with drivetrain confidence and peace of mind that's unparalleled.
SRAM's new Stealth brakes include the Code Silver Stealth, Code Ultimate Stealth, Level Silver Stealth & Level Ultimate Stealth in both 2 and 4 piston varieties. These brakes appear to be following a trend of integration that we've recently been seeing more of in the mountain bike world, however it is nothing new in the cycling world in general. By looking at the way these are designed, you could definitely assume there is potential for more integration in the future of mountain bike design including running brake cables into the handlebars, headset and so on. This may be nightmare inducing for some, but rest assured you will still be able to get your good old fashioned normal hydraulic disc brakes with normal looking cables for the foreseeable future.
For all the nitty gritty details and more, check out the blog article in the link below.

I don't get how the cables being internally routed changes anything though (besides aesthetics). What am I not getting?
@akairborne
@akairborne Год назад
@@topspot4834 I'm in Alaska and ride a fat bike during the winter. To keep my hands warm I have poagies over the end of the bars (think really huge, insulated pockets). The cables routed off the brakes create a gap where the poagie seals around the bar allowing wind to come in. Angling the cable towards the bar is a great improvement because it will improve the seal. Internally routing is the best because the seal would be almost air tight.

That gear progression update was seriously overdue. Originally tacking on that 52t without changing the jump up from 42t was a petty reaction with half assed effort to compete with Shimano's well thought out 10-51 cassette. And that's coming from a Sram fan. For that reason, I've continued to run the 10-50t eagle cassettes on all my bikes. But better steps on the new cassette may change that in future builds and replacement parts. Hope the new Transmission has a good tight clutch!
@GarrettHMTB
@GarrettHMTB Год назад
I agree with you 100%. I am also very curious on the new clutch system as well. I currently run a shimano XT chain and cassette with the "old" X01 AXS on my bike, gives the best of both worlds for me. The only thing I hate though is Sram's clutches, they are terrible, super weak. I have had to do so much stuff to my bike to make it quiet & bearable because that weak roller bearing clutch can't hold anything. When you get the derailleur brand new they are actually pretty good, but over time they just become terrible, the one I have on my bike right now, it isn't offering much more than a derailleur without a clutch lol. I live in SoCal so the trails are always rough here, so at least for me a good clutch is a must, I want to hear the trail, not my chain slapping around like crazy. I ran a full Shimano XT group for a while but for some reason I got unlucky with the derailleur and it's like way too stiff and it doesn't shift right. Sram has used that lame roller bearing clutch system forever, definitely glad to see they finally put a different style in there, that new cassette and chain looks awesome too. The flat top chain is the same one they've been using on the etap road bikes for a while now though, nothing new there. But lets be real here, Shimano nailed their 10-51 way before sram did. Shimano has had their 12 speed stuff out since 2019, sram is way late to the game on finally re-doing their cassette.

@Paulklampeeps
@Paulklampeeps Год назад
What if it eventually breaks and destroy the frame along with it?
@SirDinksAlot
@SirDinksAlot Год назад
Yes. Pretty sure that's why the aluminum derailleur hangar was invented in the first place. Hangars were brazed to the frame previously and they would break frames. The SRAM though does "break away" when it smacks something. Lets go and jumps to the granny gear when it gets smacked by a rock, etc.. then resets back. That should help alot. I can say that I've never had to use the hangar alignment tool on my AXS XX1 derailleur. I use it quite often on the CX bike (Di2), and old hardtail (XX 11spd). So maybe it will be ok.
@n.kittleson
@n.kittleson Год назад
I’d be willing to bet SRAM thought about that and in the worst case, they could have implemented the lower cage to bend or break first to protect the derailleur. AXS also has that snap feature where you knock your derailleur and the motor disengages to move and not snap anything. I think breaking this thing is going to take some real serious abuse
@trekkeruss
@trekkeruss Год назад
To me the issue is is that if it gets bent…even if it is unlikely…you cannot replace a relatively inexpensive hanger, you replace an extremely expensive derailleur.

I like that they are putting in the R and D to improve derailers and standardizing hangers but one thing I worry about is if it takes a really bad hit there's more potential to damage the frame it'll be interesting to see if this is a problem or not. As for the new brakes I'll probably only try them if they come on a new bike and they'll probably only last one ride before I swap them for saints.

After watching Peak Torque's review, I realized that there might be some downsides to this new design. Key points from his review is- 1. Not having a hangar means that all the force of impacts will be transferred to your dropouts and rear triangle, thus risking damage to carbon dropouts. 2. Shift performance might vary from one bike to another, since different manufacturers use different tolerances and they don't all have perfectly aligned dropouts. With traditional hangars, you can use an alignment tool to get things straightened out. 3. That serrated washer that sits against the dropout is going to chew into your carbon dropout.

I was hoping to buy the new Codes, but I don’t think you can get clean hose routing with UK/moto brake setup. Especially with routing like my Santa Cruz where you have to take the left/rear brake in on the left side of the frame. Might be okay if you can take it across the headtube to the right side/drive side, but haven’t we be told to leave a big enough loop incase of a crash to allow the bars to rotate and not rip you hoses out. Doesn’t seem possible with this hose angle.

I got very excited about this.. until I saw that the cassette costs even more than the derailleur itself. $720 for the XX SL cassette and $180 chain! Insane consumable prices. Even the cheapest XO variants are $480 and $120 respectively. I would have paid up for the deraullier but not the annual fee that comes with it. It's a shame because I love the look and I love the new features.

To confirm this is still compatible with Rival, Force and Red right?

Will this "transmission" be available with cable operation for those of us that dont want to rely on a battery?

That would be amazing, although unlikely.

Not gonna lie... it's all pretty cool. I think the crank arm finish looks cheap, gloss black and block script doesn't SCREAM premium, but that transmission shifter looks bad ass. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone with existing AXS is going to rush out and buy these parts, but there will be some pretty sick OEM builds coming soon that feature this stuff. Unfortunately, that also probably means MORE rising bike costs.

Is old AXS remote compatible with this new “Transmission derailleur” ?
@Magoo71

They said it was....It does seem that the new controller sits too far inboard to mess with your thumb knuckle banging against it while riding...

@@Magoo71 my thoughts are same as yours and I have no issue with the current remote.

I think the future is going to be an ultra slim wireless CVT bike transmission mounted to the rear wheel. No need for a chain slapping around hitting your rear triangle or a 12 piece cassette and a hanger/chain tensioner…

Does the deraileur come off every time you remove the rear wheel?
@buckroger6456
@buckroger6456 Год назад
I believe it actually has two mounting points. One is the main part that the rear axle runs through and the second is the one that holds it in place when you take the wheel off, by using the derailleur hanger mount.

Looks like a great system....especially fir my eBike! I just find it so hard to believe you can shift under full load and use full power that actually shift better than a pedal bike.....Wow is it pricey ....do you have to use their expensive chain? I like their innovation for sure and have been using a full XX1 Drive train since I got my new eBike over a year and a half ago....I love SRAM's drive train stuff but don't care for their brakes one bit...I'm a Hope Brakes guy, I like their design, their operation and how they work all while being adjustable on the fly!

I have the xxSL derailleur, crank, and cassette and it really does not shift well. The derailleur gets stuck on the cassette almost on the lightest gears. Micro adjusting the gears has not helped at all.
