Great review Barry! I have the exact same setup. Be advised... the top right rotary is tied to the two red toggles. You can map the toggles differently for each position of the top right nob.
Interesting that now we know the button on the plastic mounting ring is so the wheel knows if it has the QR installed and the wheelbase can run at max torque on the DD1/2, or if it needs to run at reduced torque for the plastic mount. In point of fact, that means this wheel WAS designed to handle the high torque of a direct drive wheel, which is why it has no trouble doing so when converted. Great review!
Should be a given for Fanatec to send one or both of them to him for review. He is smart, fair, and very in depth with his reviews. If they have nothing to hide then Barry's review will be THE standard to judge them by.
I believe the pin got bent after you removed the plastic QR and laid the wheel on the bench. The QR protected the pins from being exposed, I would remove the QR right before pulling the wire harness through to replace it with the mod.
Love this conversion kit. It's the cheapest entry point into direct drive with all the inputs you could dream of as well as satisfying shifts. Barry miffed a little bit on the installation, but solid review as always. Now I can link a video to people asking if it's a good DD wheel. ;)
Barry, I always enjoy your reviews. I purchased the SRM kit as I upgraded from CSL Elite to SimRacing Bay OSW small mige. However, after 2months of use, the left side grip has completely snapped off the wheel. I was only running it at 50% (100% in SimCube. configured as 40nm in iRacing. which results in 50% power) and had roughly 30hours on it before it broke. SRM kit is awesome. But this plastic flimsy wheel will not last long. First time I used it, I thought I felt some wiggle in the grip. So I went ahead and took it apart, and filled around the grips with 2part epoxy, too. But that didn't help. Your suspicion was correct. This plastic wheel cannot take the DDW power. I can't really complain as this wheel was made for CSL Elite, that can run 6Nm. Not 20Nm like small Mige can.
Yeah, we are definitly using this wheel beyond it's intended stress levels. I didn't use mine enough at higher levels to crack anything. But I can see where it would only be a matter of time before problems developed. I still think it's a viable option for those who don't run their DD systems at the higher levels. At least is should last a while longer than yours did. Plus, cheap to buy a another one when it wears out.
Barry you spoke of modifying the grips. I am in the 1 percentile that this wheel pressed on some nerve that caused my fingers to loose feeling by the first pit-stop in LeMans or IMSA in iRacing. However I was able to correct the problem with some course sandpaper used to smooth out the peaks in the grip surface that my hands felt. The change was small visually but huge in comfort.
Yes, the way a grip effects us is very important for driving comfort. Glad you got it sorted. Surprised that we don't hear more about this subject in general. I will be experimenting with some self fusing silicon electrical tapes I have. Not sure about durability though. Also, now using some gel padded cycling gloves instead of regular driving gloves. Lot's of things we can try to improve grip comfort.
I'd advise not filling the cavities with epoxy. The stresses will be diverted outwards to other ribs or cavities in the wheel, instead of being divided over the intended ribs, that are most likely designed using stress analysis software.
On sim racing machines website it states the V2 conversion doesnt support a bite point for the clutches so how come yours does? Any idea Barry Sim Racing Garage
I think Fanatec will improve the strength of the mclaren wheel once they figure out how long itll last on a DD1 or 2. It is not going to take a beating like that for longer periods of time, seeing you drive with it on a Direct drive.
Hi Barry....thanks for putting out such thorough review videos! While watching you drive in this one, I noticed something that I'm not getting from my OSW....and that is how you seem to be able to catch pretty gnarly slides with opposite lock. I have an OSW with Granity that I've happily been driving for about 18 months and, to a degree, I can catch slide with a quick flick, but when in the Formula 3.5 (iRacing) tonight at Sebring going into T1, I purposely overdrove entry and when I went to catch it, the car promptly overcorrected and stuffed into the outer wall. If you have any links to any setup guides for the OSW or links to anything else that you think would be helpful, I'd love to see them. Thanks!
That rotary switch is just a coding issue @46:00. I'm 100% sure you can write the code in teensy to make it recognize it only once instead of constantly beeing lit up. Very nice video. Thank you for this installation guide :)

creaky will one day go "snap". R.I.P. McLaren GT3 wheel. (mine broke after 2months on small Mige 20Nm). I run SimCube at 100%, and configured 40Nm in iracing. basically running it at 50%.
awesome video like allways barry i have the same conversion kit mountet on my v1 wheel but the display doesent work properly is there some workaround? on automobilista 2 its showing only the gerars on assetto corsa nothing that makes sense

Hi Barry do u still have the USB conversion kit from SRM because I was wondering if you could mount it to the Fanatec Porsche 918 RSR steering wheel and then mount the rim along with the USB conversion kit to a Thrustmaster T300RS in a video please mate
i don't this would last (why so much plastic, seriously?a nice looking wheel like that!). in order to make it stronger i would add a aluminum ring inside instead of epoxy if hopefully there is enough space . 4 holes minimum would be threaded. i d use spacers to make contact with the ring. i pre-ordered one and having second thoughts now. yes definitely aluminum rings and stand offs
I love Barry’s videos but It looks ridiculous when he is on his rig. Looks like the ffb is up way to high. Probably fun though but must kill your arms after a session on that!!
Barry, if Im loking for wheel for osw aystem is it better to buy fanatec f1 or this one . I know the f1 has aluminum parts so should be stronger. What's is your tought ?
I mean f1 aluminium or carbon wheel vs mclaren. As I saw in this video you think about support wheels plastic hub ,is that not requaired for the f1 wheel. I have big mige and Im worried if the motor will not damage the hub in the wheel to quick. At this moment I use fanatec bmw wheel with audrino build in motors shaft extension,so can connect any fanate wheel without ingerete inside the wheel.

Barry, Epoxy Does Help the Body Rigidity. been there. Done that. Well worth the hassles. Tho to be flat out honest, it still has large amount of flex when on a Mige. =( #PlasticFantastic
