The intensity of the self satisfied smirk on the face of the 911 engineers... how it must feel to be faulted only for making something without fault. It's every German's dream.
I wonder why the Viper is struggling in sales. The Viper was the car to have back in the 90s when it came out, and it seems to be a fad that has faded. It's a shame, because it's such a cool car.
the problem is with the new corvette. everyone who can afford an expensive sports car is buying the new c7. the viper is a little more expensive than what you get for the price and dealers are being suuuper stingy with the few prospective viper buyers that there are. they very rarely offer test drives and often talk people out of buying them
pavettto -_- you have no soul if you really want 4 bangeers to replace v8s i mean really when some one buys a v8 its because they want to go fast and sound awsome other wise we would all drive a boosted prius
eaglesdood16 I did hear that about dealerships, that they are very reluctant to allow test drives in the Viper. While it is true that the SRT Viper came out around the same time as the C7 Corvette, Corvettes are a dime a dozen. So many people have them, and it seems like more people would want a bit more exclusivity.
pavettto "So you think the problem in that car car is the RIGHT type of transmission is a problem?" Who buys NEW Vipers? Who buys Lincoln MKZs? Both of these questions have something in common. Answer those questions and you'll see why Manual only is a problem. As for inefficient? My American V8 has been getting 30-34 mpg since before an economy car could do the same with PLENTY of power. I agree that turbos are sweet, but your point is a little flawed and jumps the gun by a mile.
I really think the Turbo S is the best overall car for a person who enjoys driving. It does almost everything so damn well and is definitely the best rounded sports car. Would buy in a heartbeat if money weren't an issue.
No he shouldnt haha hes one of the least entertaining motor journalists out there and has ill informed comments about things that make him look just plain ignorant. Very few would want to look at him for 10-15mins at a time while he reviewed a car.
TheSmokingTire The entire car or just how it sounds? Jesus, I'm discovering some new stuff here. Car enthusiasts who don't like the S85 engine, this is new.
TheSmokingTire I'll give you the gearbox, although it downshifts like no other, it's a little sloppy and slow (We're talking 10 year old car btw) if you don't do it right, but the engine... that's bmws finest level right there. And if that's an OK sound, whats a great sound?
TheSmokingTire for a car lover saying that the m5 e60 isent a awsome supercar blows my mind sinds that car deserves to be in the hall of fame when it comes to v10 sound and exhaust sound as stock car...
Brunlera Only kids and immature adults use this to explain why people have opinions different from their own when faced with comparisons like Viper vs Porsche 911 Turbo S. Just because something is more expensive doesn't mean it's better, or that everyone should want it instead of something less expensive. Everyone is different; get over it.
Zack, are you serious? I can't believe some of the things you said in this video. I can't decide if you're just being facetious or you really think these things."A 911 isn't a sports car because it's usable", "Baseball players [professional athletes] are lazy", "V10s don't sound good". Do you think the Gallardo is an abomination? GT-R has no sense of humor, is that not a sports car?
Agreed. It's like saying "broadband isn't internet, because it allows you to surf the web AND talk on your landline at the same time." Just because technology/engineering has improved, doesn't make the 911 any less of a sports car. And who the hell doesn't like the sound of V10s?
When you compare MLB played to sports like basket ball, football, hockey, soccer, they are (by comparison) lazier. Standing still until a ball is hit to them, running bases once every few hours when they're at bat. Compare that to running and grappling with giants every minute (nfl), or 15 minute periods (hockey). Golf....oh boy.
The clips of the Viper launching were for some reason fascinating to watch. I guess it's the way the tires look like they're spinning on ice. Awesome. Great video, guys.
Im surprised he doesn't like v10 sounds! Im the total opposite, they are my favorite. The Porsche Carrera GT? Possible the best sounding car on the planet
Right. Didn't know I needed to own a car to give an opinion about it. Guess ever car reviewer should quit their job since they don't own every car they review right? You must be pretty awesome to be able to go through life without giving opinions on things you don't own. Dumbass.
Tomaz Hilton Nothing in the world sounds like a 911 other than another 911, or perhaps a Cayman or a Boxster. You would know this if you've even been in one before.
At $140,000, an ACR surpasses the bounds of performance handling [1.5g's] collecting 13 track records. No Porsche but the GT2RS can touch it. Mopar chip and a Green Filter [708hp] and nothing touches it on any track. Much better value for the money.
Lawrence Fearon who cares about the numbers, you cant beat the luxury/performance of the 911 turbo , you are paying for the materials and the engineering
Love the Viper! No comparison! Naturally aspirated. No tubros/superchargers. No Gizmos! Pure adrenaline rush! And the looks - something one can die for!
Sportcar= Compromises. That should be a verse in the automotive bible. Long live Drivers cars and car purists. I totally like cars that scare the crap out of me. Flicking paddles and going fast around a corner with active aero tech, stability and traction, all wheel drive with torque vectoring will NEVER be fun ANYWHERE compared to shyt load of torque, rear wheel drive, little to no nannys, and a box that you gotta row yourself whilst pressing a third pedal along with your brake and gas pedal trynna get a heel-and-toe perfect before a corner entry. Its not for everyone though thats for sure. And i'd rather have one car for everyday bashing in traffic etc. and a VIPER for everything else, with money STILL left over for more fun stuff. Hell for the extra $60 grand left over, why wouldn't I buy and modify a BRZ or even buy a base Cayman? Fun is subjective right? I say Zack for President !!
you my friend and very few people like you in this Stupid planet are the once i wanna live its true what Dodge said these cars are not for all enthusiast outta 100% there is 5% who wants this car its not for everyone glad to be AN OLD FART:)
David MuscleGuy lol old fart, dude u should go around my other commented videos and see the pages upon pages of people arguing with me. I'm glad to be an old fart, if that means I'm enjoying cars like these that keep me away from twitter, Facebook, cellphones, sippin' latte all whilst driving or taking a corner (as Matt put it lol), then so be it. Can't help being a Purist bro I know you know what I mean. I was totally cheering for Zack Klapman in this video. Matt is one of the best car enthusiasts on RU-vid after Chris Harris, but I give credit where its due and Zack takes the cake with his opinions.
cheapo911 Nothing is perfect...it doesn't have a manual box :P so therefore to some old loyal Porsche customers, that is a huge problem. They do make some extraordinary cars, but you can't mess around with the SRT Viper. The word 'beast' defines the Viper and its just such a manly car. It will punish you, kick you in the crotch, plant your face into the ground, and spit on you. It will make a driver out of anyone. Porsche, while great, is not so great when my grandma can get in it and do 0-60 in 2.6 sec. A car that requires effort to learn and control, is worth more to a proper driver and will always bring more joy and keep you in control. Now that doesn't apply to everyone because FUN is a subjective term and some people just wanna get in it and gun it, which is also fine, though I was simply stating my point of view under this video. Whatever floats your boat man but NOTHING is perfect. And if this Porsche is the definition of Perfect, then I say imperfection is the fun game to play, as Zack Klapman has stated beautifully, that a supercar MUST have compromises. Some of us like it like that.
since when was a shitty handling car with a lot of power and an ancient gearbox fun? in my opinion, winning is fun. winning in comfort is more fun. and driving next to a viper in that porsche knowing that the viper owner is shitting his pants out of pure fear because the porsche will DESTROY in every aspect is fun. ive heard enough of this 'bring back the six speed rear wheel drive' nonsense. drive both cars and let me know which is more " fun "..
I don't own a 911 but a recently had in my possession a 2005 911 Carrera S for a few months (sold it for a friend) and it's was an amazing car AMAZING. I can only imagine what a new Turbo S is like.
It goes like this... -If you are seeking a weekend warrior car that is exotic looking, fast, and brutal - get a lamb, Viper, or Ferrari. -If you want a car to drive often, that offers it all: speed, comfort, electronics - get Nissan GTR or a Porsche.
***** viper do not belong on the same category with lambo and ferrari, its way below, gtr is also a cheap plastic car so its a shame to compare it to a porsche which is way better.
Loved the video....back in the late 60's and early 70's-my great aunt Helen had 3 911s. All the same model-just different colors. Her husband was an insurance executive and bought all 3 when she couldn't make up her mind with color she liked.
At 2:19, you can see the very moment that Matt Farah admits he is old, confirms his appreciation of comfort over style, and hands the torch to the next generation of sports car reviewers. Matt, I look forward to your review of the 2015 Toyota Camry. ; )
I know I'm going to get hammered for stating this, but here it goes. The Viper looks dated, yes I know people say the Porsche is unchanged from the get go (50 years) But there is just something very special about this car and it's design. It steps forward every generation, whereas the Viper just doesn't do that and falls behind the times. Flame on.
That guy talking about how the Porsche is not a sports car because it is too good, WTF?. SO he meant to say that the viper compared to a Porsche is a Piece of Shit. Dodge/SRT will never ever create and build a car on par with Porsche.
I know. Logic: "It's too good, therefore America's Viper is better." #TooPrideful Viper would struggle to get under 4 Seconds from 0-60 consistently. Might as well have tested the Carrera 4s instead of Turbo S. lol. Besides if you were sold on buying an American sports car, why not a Corvette Z06? Just over half the price with more tech and performance!
I don't agree with Zack on many things he said in this video, but he is entitled to his own opinion. It's his way of seeing stuff. Bashing and hating against him won't do anything. No one said you had to agree with him.
Each to his own, but I disagree, to me, not that I've driven one, but it doesn't seem like it can put down all that power where it's needed. But I couldn't say tho.
***** I think it depends on what you do and how far the commute is. Im surprised they had a GTS without the laguna leather package and carbon fiber package. 140k is also just an msrp price. You can get well optioned GTS's brand new for 110-128
This comparison seemed ridiculous merely upon reading the title let alone watched the video. This guy driving the Viper (not Matt Farah) keeps on arguing that a sports car can't do everything. The Germans have yet again smashed that American born notion. With the greatest respect many sports cars can do 'everything'.
Dejan Štamec I would class the Viper as an Exotic Muscle car. It just has the muscle car layout, engine at the front drive to back and smoking tires at the back as well.
Chris Nolan A hardcore sports car is nothing more than a sports car such as the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. It is not meant to be a luxury car. It is meant to be a track car.
i think the viper is a cool car, but there is absolutely no doubt that the 911 turbo is better in every way that can be rated objectively. faster, more comfortable, more practical, more manageable size, better interior, altogether more refined and much more of an engineering achievement. it's 60'000 more expensive, but it's 100'000 more car. the viper is definitely a fun toy, and i like its bold concept of being basically a massive engine with a tiny little box at the end for the driver, but it's nowhere close to the porsche. maybe compared to the carrera s it's a viable option, but not compared to the turbo.
***** says the guy bringing top speed into the argument. and then the same guy brings safety into the mix, IN FAVOR of the viper, saying that people can't handle this power anyway. and then he goes on to explain that you could theoretically get more additional power out of the viper. go read my initial comment again and make sure you understood what I wrote before you try and start an argument, and if you do, try not to contradict yourself every second sentence... and btw, there's lots of over 1000 HP porsche turbos out there, and there's such a thing as track days. which people who buy these cars are going to go to.
givemeajackson wouldn't say that last time i checked when was the track where both cars compared at once and the Porsche won let's not forget the 911 turbo is the fastest 911 so then compare it to the viper ta then but when the acr is out later this year it's going to kick some ass
***** By 1000ms+ 0-60 ... (or 40%). Top speed is the same (not sure if the Dodge is limited, but the Porsche is, so tires can sustain the speed). Unrestricted the 911 does 217 (198 restricted vs 198 ... so identical top speed based on mfg numbers).
Porsche embodies art, precision, and usable performance in one package through decades of R&D and motorsports heritage. The Viper is awesome and capable, but will always be a one trick pony. I love my 996 Porsche and am considering a 991 Turbo. My dream car is the 911 GT3; then again, I would be a Hippocratic if i bought that car. We must remember what Porsche has done with the 911 Turbo since it first came out. The Turbo has evolved from being the widow-maker to a car that anyone can drive fast. Porsche, there is no substitute.
Love the new smoking tire host. Easy to listen to and I agree with his opinions. Him along with Matt Farah make one good duo. Keep up the good work folks! Enjoy watching your videos.
Shouldn't talk like the Viper isn't a fast car. They both have advantage and disadvantage. I love the suspension technology of Porsche. Soft shocks and dampers allows better weight transfer to rear during acceleration and an active roll control for better balance on race tracks, still the pitch of the car is a bit too much and did co some oversteer underbraking, lighter the rear is, less effectiveness it gain from the stability control. The launch is awesome. It's one of the most torque AWD car which allows it knock to 60 in 2.6 and 1/4 in 10.6s. However, the Viper is slower in acceleration coz SRT never care about 0-60. It's a RWD with an useless launch control unless you're on a proper drag strip. The damper is also too stiff, you can't accelerate as quick as the Turbo S for sure. However, if it's a rolling start, the Viper may gain some advantage. Compare them both is kind of useless. The Viper is a sportscar and the 911 is a GT. However, comes to lap time, the Viper is a Porsche eater. It got the potential to be fast. Look at the TA. Stiffer shocks, wider rear tire, lighter, more power makes it far faster than 911 Turbo S on Laguna Seca and VIR. I call this doing more with less.
LAUNCH CONTROL 東瀛戰神 is this real? Ur actually saying good things about porsche? Knight Ryder there is light in the end of the tunnel! And its not a train!
I was waiting for a comparison between a Viper and a 991. These two cars are currently on my top 5 favorite cars list. I saw a white Viper about a week ago for the first time and it was absolutely stunning.
I don't understand, if a sports car can't make you laugh and isn't fun to drive, why would you buy it? You buy a sports car soley to have a good time in. Being practical isn't an arguement if you want a practical car buy an used Toyota.
The porsche does make you laugh and is obscenely fun to drive. It's just that you can also drive it year round and it's comfortable to sit in. I don't see how that's bad.
Viper all day, its looks better sounds better, More exciting, Much cheaper to own and use, Manual, Rwd, When you have a car that does everything...You have a car that does nothing, And that for me, Isnt a good thing. The turbo is certainly no bad car in any way, But its not the car for me.
Get that kid out of there, he doesnt know what he's talking about. The porsche is not a sports car because "its too good"? Then he goes on to say he turns off the radio in the viper because he wants to focus (as if he couldnt drive with it because it would be too distracting for him) does that mean he needs extra help to drive? This guy doesnt know what he is trying to say and its only the start of the video! "I think a sports car should require you to compromise a few things" So if its not compromising on something it cant be a sportscar? The cringe!
You're just too dense to get what hes saying. A true sports car is made for one thin; performance and driving spirit. A sports car has two doors and no back seat. The layout alone tells you that they aren't for anything other than driving for fun. The Viper isn't trying to be anything except the pinnacle of sports car. When you get in a Viper you are completely absorbed in the atmosphere of the beast. You drive a Viper to DRIVE. Its a performance focus play toy as thats what a sports car really is. The Porsche like many other cars today are trying to be more than they should. The Porsche is a great performance car but because of how much use the car has it can't really be defined as a sports car.
I want to hate Porsches, I hate that they push the engine all the way to the back to favor the rear seats, useless rear seats, what kind of sports car gives so much importance to the rear seats? specially over the engine's location! and I hate that despite this they are still awesome and one of the best sports cars out there... But that guy's "rules" he made up for something to qualify as a sports car are just childish and dumb, he's trying too hard
I know where you are coming from, but the back seats do have some occasional use, be it you are moving some boxes, or even if you have young children and you have to do the daily run to school, the back seats aren't completely useless, and as they said, the Porsche 911 is a daily driver, so it is necessary for the rear seats to be where they are supposed to be.
There is some merit what he is saying though. A sports car is supposed to be a race car for the road plain and simple... You idiots bashing him are forgetting that there is a category called "grand touring" car's and to me this is what the 911 is. Even though it handles and goes like a race car, it has the luxury of a grand tourer. So in fact he is dead on in what he is saying and you guys are pretty much just haters who don't know what they are really talking about. Sports car and supercars try to kill you. That is what makes them so fun!
ap2pat I get what your saying but the 911 does the sport part better then the viper. So basically he is saying a sports car can't have anything but sport. Well if we judged these cars based on just the sports aspect of the cars the 911 would still win. But it comes with alot more goodies.
Thanks for the video. I havent driven the 911 and it appears to be well set up. However, I think it fair to note that one who purchases the viper at it's current price is probably buying the car for their own particular likings, and are well aware of its brutality. After all its cost isnt much less than the base 911. In that market most consumers do own multiple vehicles, each for their intensive purpose.
There wouldnt have been an argument if your guys just exchanged keys and each drove the other car. Fantastic video quality in these newer videos. Keep rolling out more awesome stuff
What.. Here is my argument! A viper isnt a sportscar, it's Rubish! It's better than the last model, but that thing had comparable handling of a 1970's Kenworth..
WTF are you talking about, lolz. The TA has the record at Laguna Secca. It pulls 1.13gs and 70-0 braking in the 140ft mark. Good lord youtubers, quit saying stupid-ass lies about American cars.
oh you must be from europe. tell me then, what production car set the 'ring lap record for 5 years, to finally be beat this year by a porsche 3x it's price? no go on, look it up young sport
Here is my argument! You're a European kid who watches too much Top Gear, hasn't driven any of the cars that you even comment on, and is trashing the viper solely because it's an American car...get off it kid.....back to tea and crumpets for you
You're an idiot, yet only partially wrong. The SRT Viper IS rubbish. It's hopelessly unrefined, uncomfortable, loud, unpredictable, and far from enjoyable to drive. That said, it is one of the fastest production cars in the world, and has set countless lap records (Nurburgring, Laguna Seca, etc). Only a truly ignorant bigot would argue that it has poor handling/cornering.
What they said is despite of Viper's true sportscar character, fast, fun and scary, Turbo S is outrageously quick and still very comfortable, and overall a much better car. Can ACR, just being faster and scarier than the standard one, erase their point? I don't know about it.
Great balance between the presenters, enjoyed the vid. Loved the two takes on the cars, that porsche is so sick I don't care if you call it a sports car or not =)
+Themayseffect No, the Porsche is pretty much a race car too. It's all of the above, like he was trying to say. It's fast in a straight line and around a track, that combination can make it a race car. The 911 GT3 RS is actually just street legal race car (can be ordered with a fire extinguisher under the passenger seat...lol).
Which car manufacture is built on race cars? Porsche for over 70+ years has built race cars and the 911 is based off a race platform, what has Dodge done? Built one offs every now and then?
+Francisco Garcia Jr if i remember correctly, the Dodge Viper did something on the Nurburgring that the 911 never did - for some reason i remember lap times & something about records being broken? i feel like it happened more than once too..
how can you not like the e60 m5? super car sounds in a sedan. the v10 is electrifying as it revs to 8250.... its so tunable too. if you do the uber pricey dinan stroker kite you can have north of 640 hp in the smg or a 6 speed manuel....
"I don't think a sports car should do everything good" the guy driving the viper says the Porsche isn't a sports car because it does everything good haha. No the viper just sucks in general
Totally subjective, the difference is that in order to drive the Viper at anywhere near the speeds the Porsche can achieve with an average driver behind the wheel you will have to be a damn good driver, like it or not most people are not anywhere near as good a driver as their egos would lead them believe. I am far from a great driver but I have raced enough times to know in the hands of an average driver the Porsche would leave the Viper far behind. That said I still think both have their own specific appeal and both are damn nice cars.
He hit it right on!!!!!! If you are not sacrificing room, comfort, noise, etc. then you are missing the point of a true sports car. All true sports exotic should be outrageous - low, wide, loud, tight suspension, and comfort a last thought. That's some of the things that makes an exotic and exotic. If this was not true, we would all watch a Nissan GTR - heavy, comfortable, daily driver thats fast. Big deal!!!!!!!!!!! Any of you wannabes disagree than go drive a Viper ACR or Ford GT - Porsche and Nissan GTR's are a bore.
TheSmokingTire , Zack continues to be awesome in his new role as co presenter along side Matt. He's the James May to Matt's Clarkson. Well done all, once again.
I'm sorry, a tasteless male over 50 with greasy slicked back dyed hair and a tattoo of a hooker he onced loved before winning the lottery and buying a 140k Dodge.
Michael Williams Someone above 50 couldn't handle the ride. The Viper is for enthusiasts, someone who wants a raw experience. Huge engine, light chassis. The old man will go for the more "comfortable" Porsche.
No my friend... the Viper is a super car, not a sports car, what a 911 is indeed... You need 2 put attention on how 2 drive because of that. A Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sports car, a Nissan 370 Z is a sports car, a Pontiac Solstice, BMW Z4 and Mercedes CLK all of them are sports car... but you´re driving a Super car!
.. you're a little confused about what a 911 Turbo is.. it's called The Reference SuperCar by a lot of people. Not the regular Carrera, the Turbo. Remember the 930 ?
To me theres two ways you can see this. It's either: I'm an intelligent human being who likes the good stuff, including quality in everything in a car and actual performance, comfort and sophistication, or the other version: I fuck my sister, shoot hamsters., and think Rush Limbaugh is da man. While i'd love to try a Viper for a day (more likely half or a quarter of a day, judging by the reviews out there), i'd never buy it over something proper like a Porsche. No way in hell.
The other option not mentioned (with respect to Porsche building an awesome 911) is the ability to tune/upgrade the Viper with twin turbos and adjustable power levels from 750-950+ hp at the wheels. All while NOT having to rebuild the engine due to it's stock forged internals. Several companies including a few small but high end shops have done this o. The Viper with great results.
