!987 SRX 600 YAMAHA 1JK Model .7,300 Kms on the clock. I purchased the SRX from the motorcycle auctions in Japan. It had obviously not been used for quite a few years... At this point it has been thoroughly cleaned, oils changed, fitted with a new battery and the front master cylinder replaced. The fuel tank was OK and basically rust free..It hasn't been touched mechanically at all..It rides well and has no obvious problems. My Motto.."If aint broke, don't fix it"

Beautiful little bike. Used to have one those. This is how I remember the early morning cold start ritual: 1) choke on, crank it over twice or so to fill the cilinder with mixture 2) crank it over just at compression stroke (you can feel it) 3) kick it! 4) if it run's make sure to warm it up: if it dies while not thorougly warmed up ... it'll take quite some kicking to get it running again... (memories of me bathing in sweat while trying to make it run while a queue of cars lines up behind me after it died while waiting for the traffic lights....)

xanten69 I knew someone would bust you for your kick start technique. My brother broke his ankle not finding top dead center before kicking over my DR650, a back fire will hurt you. I love the bike.

***** Thanks Chris, comments noted. I also had an early Kawasaki KLR600R of the same age as the SRX. Kick start only. to get that mother going I had to stand my left leg on something at least a foot higher than ground level..put on a pair of heavy steel cap boots, and say a little prayer.. and go for it.. too much for a 60y.o. SRX has a decompression device built into the kick start so is a lot easier...

I had a Suzuki 600 Enduro, no decomp. It was a beast and would break ankles if u didn't find top dead center before kicking it. Literally broke my brother's ankle on a back fire. It's a mans machine.

Sounds like the early 600 Kawasaki single that I described in an older comment. I sold it to a British enthusiast that previously had an old school bsa 500 single...he claimed that there was still a large dent in his parents carport roof where the bsa had kicked back so hard it flung him head first into the roof....probably more dents in it now since he left with the KLR ... Stay safe !

I've had many comments on my mushy kick starting technique... Well sorry if it upsets you but it has a decompression valve that is triggered by the kickstart,..I could have started it by doing a backflip and landing on my head on the kickstart or maybe with one hand, but it's hard to find a compression stroke when it has no compression... just spin it over anywhere really. I had a first model Kawasaki 600 single dirt bike at the time... ha ha... was it a mother to kick over. The only way I could start it was to stand on a styrofoam block that was 12 inches high...effectively increase my height to 7 ft 2...get it just short of top dead centre, lunge down and pray. Sometimes it would start.

Haha, as soon as I watched I knew the hate for you not finding top dead center before kicking it over would be intense. From people who have never kicked over anything, let alone a 600. But as soon as I kicked it 9ver I realized you had a decomp valve. Having had a 600 Suzuki single without I know that's the only way you could start it like that. Strange to be criticized by people who have likely never had a kick start bike, let alone a motorcycle at all.

restoring one of these as we speak and made an enthusiastic tear down of the carbys before taking a photo, my problem is the vacuum line placement. The manual is not very helpful and I am reduced to just trying a few options, but if you can enlighten me with a diagram, I would be most grateful... the cross over short pipes are obvious as is the the diagonal short pipe from one to the other, but its the primary vacuum line off rubber manifold and the other pipe also about 200mm long. One must go to the fuel cock, the other around there somewhere- a nightmare in the making!

I cant help Glenn, the 6 or so SRX I bought in Japan have all gone to new owners. All but 1 ran after new fuel and oil and I didnt need to pull carbs down to experience spagetti problems..the non goer had 600kms on the clock but had sat outside for many years...it was too sad to even try. Currently working on Honda NV 750 in almost as bad a state.

Finally worked out that the two hoses in question that caused the confusion are just drains from the top of the fuel bowl and are run down over the oil tank and down to ground, I guess in case of needle valve failure. The hose from left hand rubber manifold activates the fuel cock shutoff diaphragm....

After making my original request and doing some thinking I did get the engine running, but as you found with bikes sitting in sheds, they are pretty well messed up. In spite of that, it ran well. After another 3 months of blood sweat and frustrations, I reckon I know every corner of this bike and its currently going back together. Replaced most replaceable parts and even delved into the engine and gearbox. I've pretty well ate slept and breathed this project. Be great to get it on the road.

Bike now finished, rides like a dream. And I've mastered the starting, easy as long I place the engine just past TDC and prime it well.

No, as it doesn’t appear to have a starter motor.

Dump the engine and put a drz400 electric start into it . I also had a srx and I hated mine when the engine stopped in a tunnel .If I had keep it , I would have drop a drz motor into , with the heavy mods which it involved .

Hi, I had 7 or so of these, one was a 400 (with 600 badges on it ) I am interested in why this may be a 400 ? I had to buy them at auction in Japan, get import approval from my government and import them and pay customs levies. Capacity and model (frame number, no engine number marked on JDM yamahas...just blank ) is something that is verified every step of the way. The engine capacity is cast into the base of the barrel. I'm not a total expert on the matter but my fake 600 was not fitted with a factory oil cooler for a start and I bought it as a 400 at auction. .. but please tell me why this is a 400. I was surrounded in SRXs for a while, this was probably the best. It had not run in a decade or more and I did no more than drop the oil and put petrol in the tank, it required no more than that...
