Tristyn was one of my friends. I remember last Thursday we were joking in civics class and were drawing on each others arms. She had such a fun and kind soul. May she rest easy.

Basically what it is is a team of first responders, healthcare workers etc that host mandatory meetings after a call is deemed particularly traumatic, such as this one or really the death of any child, personal friend etc. The first responders who worked the call are required to attend the meeting, where they discuss the call and what occurred with it. The problem with that is that first responders, at least, don’t deal well with outsiders coming in and making them talk about a call they don’t want to, or at least making them acknowledge the call. The first responders want to stay with “their group,” where they feel safe and can joke and use dark humor or other unique coping mechanisms as they need to, and avoid talking about it when they don’t. A positive example of this can be seen in one big change post-WTC. After PTSD rates started to skyrocket, they decided to adjust to where grief counseling for firefighters changed from professional therapists to trained firefighters, those who understood the job instead of what some would call a “shrink” with a pen and notepad. There are calls from upwards of five years ago that I still don’t talk about, even to others in the field, and I prefer it that way. People need to cope in their own way at their own pace, not be forced to acknowledge the depth and severity of the situations they faced. Not trying to be rude or argumentative at all, just trying to offer an alternative perspective for the sake of discussion.

I agree, involve them in knowing what happened. It’s scary and might be a little uneasy for them to take in, but might give them more of an understanding why moms and just parents in general are over protective, you aren’t trying to remove their space, free time or make them feel like you don’t allow them to do anything. But there are boundaries, my mom did the same and I’m so thankful cause there are scary experiences that could have gone other ways for me if I didn’t have boundaries or such things.

The Sheriff that spoke on this video was exceptional and so professional. Two things I loved he stated was : 1) Stated the juveniles name and age who got arrested. 2) Stated he doesn't want to talk about the suspects school activities because this is not about him but it about the victim. 3) For the media to not make this a spectacle ( like they always do) and let the parents grieve and not harass the school at which the victim went to. My prayers go out to Tristyns family and friends.

I’m not BLM, or any other ridiculous fringe group, but as a citizen, I have been treated like crap by LEOs more times than not. Power tripping egomaniacs do not make “good” LEOs, and it seems like the part of the vetting process to weed those sorts of people out of the hiring pool has been forgotten. Now you wind up with these steroid pumping asshats that think it’s cool to get full sleeve tattoos running around trying to intimidate the very people they’re sworn to protect. There is a two-fold answer to the issue you cite, and it starts within the agencies that hire this type of authority abusing jackasses that from my perspective make up over half of the LEO community. Respect must be earned, not demanded by overreach and abuse of power.

The horror of losing a child never ends. Our son was killed by vehicular homicide at 23 in 2017. We are finally going to trial on July 16 for jury selection and the following Monday start proceedings 4 1/2 years later. He was struck at a minimum calculated speed of 90 mph and died instantly. His car ended up 150 feet from impact. His car battery was found at a gas station 450’ from impact. His skull was fractured in 6 places. We have to deal with this every day as the defendant gets every privilege. My heart goes put to this family.

Nothing could ever prepare a parent for this. In 1980 our son went missing for a few hours, we died a thousand times every minute. Turned out the little bugger was hiding in a closet. Worst pain and fear I ever experienced. These people are in true hell today.
I know exactly how that feels. My sons are adults now, but when they were 13 and 14, we got them four wheelers. We live in the country, and they would ride them through the woods and fields to go to a farm down the road. It was the summer, and they had to be home by 7:00. Well seven came and went, I gave them 15 minutes and when they weren't home their father and I drove to the farm, they weren't there. It was the worst feeling ever. I panicked, and we went back home and half ran, half walked the trail they would take, no sign of them. I'm in full on panic now, we went back to the farm, and here they come on their four wheelers. They had gone to a friend's and lost track of time. They said they called home, (this was before cell phones), but we were out looking for them. I was never so happy, and angry at the same time. They were grounded for two weeks, but at least we had a happy ending. RIP sweet girl.

I feel sorrow and rage for every loving parent who had their children taken from them in such a brutal manner. It's a wound time does nothing to heal. I knew a lady who lost her daughter (murdered by an obsessed school mate) and though she as a mom bravely held herself together for her family, it left a mark on her.
