The plant grows in the wild in Europe as well, of course. Great video. I'm glad I found out about the effects of this herb after decades of knowing about its existence...
It’s been hard for me lately because I stopped taking st Jon’s wart , like really hard staying awake and feeling good. I took Prozac a long time ago and it helped me feel better and productive with energy but stopped taking it because I wanted to be drug free. Is There anything I could try that’s similar to Prozac?
whenever I need complete reliable information I search for this chanel. And here I am again trying to find out if St John wort might interact with racetams (mostly piracetam, aniracetam) and modafinil. Not sure. Maybe you know this? Thanks for doing great job. Really appreciating🙏
St. John's wort will likely potentiate the effect of the racetams and modafinil at the least because of its effect on your liver enzymes. Possibly even neurotransmitter increases.
Can I take St. John's Wort with l-tryptophan? I know it shouldn't be taken with 5-HTP. I guess it shouldn't be combined because both raise serotonin. In that case, what is better to take? St. John's Wort or l-tryptophan. Which one has a better effect?
It depends on what you are trying to achieve. L-Tryptophan increases serotonin levels in your brain. That helps some people. St. John's wort works as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor more like a prescription SSRI. And that works for some people. They are two very different supplements. But I caution you about combining either Tryptophan or 5-HTP with St. John's wort. Because there is the very real danger of Serotonin Syndrome. Which can kill you. Which I have witnessed personally. Not a nice way to go.
Alpha, I've never used St. John's wort because I've never had the need to. Some people report withdrawal symptoms when stopping SJW suddenly. But other than that I've covered Side Effects in the video above.
Esam, sorry for the late reply but you need an extract like Perika®. Very few trustworthy supplement companies carry it. But Nature's Way does here: amzn.to/2QFo9jy
Hi David, Thanks for this insightful well researched video ! When I used Gaia st John's wort liquid phyto cap for few months , I got energy boost but I started having falling sleep issues. So, then I reduced the dosage from 500 mg 3x to only in the morning. I have 2 questions. Ques - Should I start using Melatonin to over come the sleep issue ( because I feel that taking st johns wort once a day is not enough). Also, I heard if I keep taking Melatonin supplements for few months then my body will stop making its own Melatonin. Is there any truth in that ? Second - would you share any link of st John wort that you recommend ? Many thanks again,
It's not that melatonin prevents your brain from making melatonin. It upsets the balance with other neurotransmitters including dopamine. Better to use L-Tryptophan before bed which makes serotonin and goes on the make melatonin naturally. This is a patented form of St. John's wort that I usually recommend: geni.us/7ehH (Amazon)
I've tapered off of zoloft which has been brutal. Got to a tiny dose and switched to Prozac but having withdrawal from Zoloft like sweats , anxiety ,panic. I want to try this for anxiety and panic attacks . Only been in Prozac a week and don't want these chemicals in my body , can I change , what dose should I take ?
Debbie, you cannot use St. John's wort. Or you'll end up with Serotonin Syndrome in either end up in the hospital or the morgue. Sorry for being so blunt but please do not try this.
Any idea on where you can buy LI-160 St. John's wort? or St John's wort that contains hyperforin? Every St. John's wort product ive been able to find just says that it contains 0.3% hypericin and none of them mention anything about containing hyperforin.
Erik, it appears that the Kira extract has been discontinued: amzn.to/3jXomY8. But you can get Nature's Way Perika St. John’s Wort which contains hyperforin: Nature's Way Perika St. John’s Wort: amzn.to/366QNho
Thank you for the video. Can you tell me if the St. John´s Wort tincture works as well as the standardised tablets? Is the hypericin and hyperforin naturally balanced in the tincture? Thanks.
It depends on the tincture. Standardized capsules or tablets are easier to predict what is in the supplement. And you want hyperforin rather than hypericin because some studies show hypericin can cause blindness in some people.
There have been no reported contraindications between the two. That doesn't mean there isn't any. But if you try it start at the lowest dose of each possible and see how you feel.
I take levothyroxine for an under active thyroid. I've read st Johns wort is good to use for mood as it doesn't use the thyroid hormone but on the leaflet in the box I bought it advises not to take with thyroid issues. I tried 5 htp and it didn't work for me. Any advice on st Johns wort
Tracey, St. Johns wort inhibits the uptake of dopamine in your brain. And your body uses L-Tyrosine to make thyroid hormone AND dopamine. But I don't see how they're related to how St. Johns wort works. Maybe I missed something?
There is no clinical evidence with real live humans showing that St. John's wort supplementation causes problems with fertility. None. There was a study in 1999 that got headlines about hamster eggs in a petri dish and crazy high doses of this supplement causing problems. So unless you are a hamster and take crazy high doses ... You should be fine.
Is it true that withdrawals from SSRI are because you have too much serotonin in the brain? And if so, how can you lower serotonin? I try to quit paroxetine but I have depersonalization and dizziness symptoms.
No. Withdrawal and detox from SSRIs is much like detoxing from benzos. These drugs desensitize (for SSRIs) serotonin receptors and their associated ion channels. And that can take years to repair itself IF you give your brain the tools it needs to do the repair. Like increasing BDNF.
Alpha, I don't see a reason to combine the two because saffron and St. John's wort both provide similar benefits. But SJW is stronger and more like a prescription drug. While they are not contraindicated I don't suggest combining them.
Absolutely NO you cannot use 5-HTP with St. John's wort because you'll likely end up with Serotonin Syndrome which is unpleasant and can ultimately kill you.
how much do st john's wort really affect cialis medication ? right now im at 300mg St john's wort a day sometimes 600mg. i use cialis cus of adhd medication otherwise i dont have erection problem and im worried that st john's wort will affect cialis. Regards
Matt, it should not be a problem. There is no published research showing them to be contraindicated. Start with the lowest recommended dose for each and see how you feel.
I just purchased this for mild depression, insomnia, etc... This video was helpful. I'm a little concerned about the brand though. All mine says is St.John`s Wort (hypericum perforatum), powdered extract300 mg**Hypercin (0.3 %) 900 mcg.
