St. Louis History - Demolishing The 1904 World Fair Pike

They called it 'The Pike'. It was a stretch of Lindell a mile long and as wide as imagination. It was a very popular attraction in the St. Louis Worlds Fair of 1904.
There were circus elephants and cliff dwellers. Places to visit to China, Cairo and attend a Bedouin wedding. You could even witness creation and get a taste of the hereafter and wash it down with a cold beer. When it came time for the final farewell St. Louis faced a dilemma.
"The fair planners had a contractual obligation to demolish the fair grounds and return Forest Park to sort of a predetermined lands. They were legally obligated to do that. The problem on the Pike was they were all concessionaires and everything they had set up was all theirs. They couldn't sell it for anything. The costs of demolition were greater than the value of what there was to salvage," said Dr. Robert Archibald.
That's when some starting suggesting the pike be made a permanent. Among those who rejected the idea was Washington University. The pike practically began at its front entrance. So that was the end of the discussion.
Of the sixty attractions on The Pike perhaps the most popular was a horse named "Beautiful Jim Key." For 15 cents you could watch him use blocks to spell his name and even do math. His wonders were later celebrated in a song which included the verse:
I can count and I can add. Know my alphabet and that's not bad. I can even give you change. For a horse that seems strange.

Temporary plaster of paris buildings would have turned into goop after the first rain fall so that doesn’t add up..

Wrong. That’s what it was made of. And up until recently they continue to find parts of that plaster buried underground. Go to the history museum and see for yourself

You are thinking of paper mache. This was much more durable than that.

@LarryGross-zl4bf no, "exposure to weather leads to disintegration/deterioration of plaster", according to Google.

My home is built from the worlds fair salvage materials. The contract to demolish the buildings was awarded to the Chicago home and wrecking company. They also demolished the worlds fair in Chicago a few years prior, and began a kit home sales division similar to the old sears homes. Mine was built in 1905 so I'm not certain which fair the materials came from. I still have all the original windows and doors on the house, as well as the vast majority of the interior as it was. All of the hardware is very ornate as is the woodwork.

they didn’t build them, takes founded to a new level. the history we know has been messed with, something happened in the 1800s early 1900s. all around these world fairs the most magnificent buildings were being built in 1 year they say and then torn down. we couldn’t make things like that in 50 years today. it’s fascinating, just look at old pictures of the white house and other capital buildings in every state. a lot of them built before power tools in less then a year with prisoners alot of time. they had contests to see who had the best design a lot to and go figure don’t they all look exactly the same. we definitely didn’t build these things, something’s off

It's a temporary Fair and you actually need to get back use of your city afterwards. Where the St. Louis World's Fair was is Forest Park today with literally one of the buildings sitll standing in as well as the Great Basin from the Fair. You can still see and touch items from the World's Fair at Missouri History Museum. People's families around here still have stories about the fair and their grandfathers working on them. Before the St. Louis World's Fair the location of the Fair was a forest and also Mississippian mounds. These were removed and the Fair built. After the Fair most temporary buildings were removed and we now have a city park. All of the buildings are not gone nor are artifacts from the creation of them.

The people who don’t at least question how hundreds of gothic style castles and cathedrals could be built by the same savages riding around in horse drawn carriages, are the indoctrinated sheep. There is literally pictures of these huge buildings with stains 10-15’ high like mud and soil had been removed from the building
