Yes, I’m finally tackling the St. Paul Sandwich. Which, for whatever reason, is really popular in St. Louis, Missouri. It’s basically Egg Foo Young in a sandwich. I mean, it’s more than just the fried egg patty but that’s the main part. I’m convinced this was created by and/or for someone who had enjoyed several adult beverages. Still, sounds tasty to me.

Sort of like an Egg Foo Young sandwich

This sandwich fascinated me for some reason so I looked up a recipe for the modern version and damn, it was great. I'll give this historical one a go some time too and report back.

I love how you always have so many new sandwiches to show us. I don’t watch most of it because I’m on a diet preparing for a bodybuilding show and the last time I watched one of your videos, I ended up binge watching maybe 20 or 30 of them and I couldn’t think of anything except sandwiches afterwards. The point is I love your channel and I think you have some great ideas. I like how your videos are short and you’re able to showcase the sandwiches. It’s a fun idea. I also like how you show historical sandwiches. It’s a nice insight as to how people used to eat.

Thank you so much! And I get it about not watching while you prep for a bodybuilding show, Best of luck with the show!

The St Paul sandwich got its name in the 1940's from a Chinese man named Steven Yuen, who came to St Louis and opened up his Chop Suey. He needed a dish to help attract customers in his African American community. He named the sandwich after his native city of St Paul, Minnesota. . . . . . .The St Paul has to be eaten with fried rice and Vess Soda (just like the commenter @lgnlive posted earlier).

It's an American okonomiyaki! The traditional sauces drizzled over an okonomiyaki would probably taste awesome over this, too.

The interesting tweak I’ve seen in St. Louis is that they wok-fry the patty using a deep ladle till it’s rather well done in temp.

I was making sandwiches like this for a while, but just with egg, cilantro, green onion, minced carrot, and minced jalapeno

Check out the Denver sandwich, a few prominent food authors figure this is derived from that. I have heard a few stories of origin, all of which circle back to an early attempt at Chinese American fusion and egg foo yung. I've even had one place serve this open faced with brown gravy on top. Thanks for the content!

Your comment on "the modern pallet" is something I've become interested in; does human taste evolves due to genetics or due to social trends? From what I've read, it's the latter.
@SandwichesofHistory
@SandwichesofHistory Год назад
Well, definitely social influence shapes how we think about taste. Nor sure on the genetics but I can say that my palate today is quite different than from when I was younger. And I know I'm not alone in that experience.

St Louis, Mo.? Are you sure it's not St. Paul, Minnesota???
@SandwichesofHistory
@SandwichesofHistory Год назад
So, the sandwich is named the St. Paul but it was created and apparently popularized in St. Louis, Missouri. I have yet to uncover what the name was chosen though.

@@SandwichesofHistory Supposedly the Chinese man that invented at his restaurant in St.Louis had previously lived in St.Paul Minnesota and chose to name the sandwich after his former home city. I’m actually from st.Louis and have yet to have one. Another interesting cultural twist to this story is that the sandwich is actually more so popular with in the black community more than it is anywhere else. They seem to love it the most.

Okay, now I'm curious, how you weigh in on the great sandwich controversy of the internet, ie "Is a hot dog a sandwich?" Personally, I fall into the radical sandwich anarchy group, where everything is either a sandwich or soup. Taco is a sandwich. Sushi is a sandwich. Just throwing out ideas :-)
@SandwichesofHistory
@SandwichesofHistory Год назад
I have a two part response. First, it is if you want it to be because all categories are made up. But to me it is a sandwich as it comes down to intent. If we look at the hot dog bun, the two sides are of equal thickness and the hinge is not. Therefore the intent it to sandwich the hotdog between to pieces of bread. The hinge is an accommodation because of the tubular shape of the meat. I also don't know anyone who would say that any sandwich chain that keeps a bread hinged isn't making sandwiches. As for the taco, it is relatively uniform in thickness so the intent is to act like a sling as opposed to a sandwich. Just my two cents.

@@SandwichesofHistory I feel like this is the type of meaningless argument that should exist on the internet. No one should get too heated about it, and even if they do, it's still not that serious. That said, we seem to be in agreement. Can't wait to see more sandwiches, especially on something besides bagged white bread. BTW, I like the 'give this sandwich a *go*', it's a nice hook
