Good to see people still use stainless stick on pipe. When I first went to work for Celanese America’s in 1976 we tested on 6” sch 40 316 pipe all the way out with Arcalloy 316-15. Many years of 100 percent stick on stainless. Once you learned how running the root was a piece of cake. As you probably figured out I’m getting up in age. Thank you for showing people stick stainless is still viable. Good job on the video.
I have a test tomorrow where I’m going to have to run a stainless root. Is there any way I can contact you and talk to you? I need some tips and pointers and I can’t find any advice or videos of stainless root getting put in
Good to see???? We have tig machines. This is pointless besides in a pinch. Companies that are too cheap to do it tig don't need to be a company anymore.
Up here in Alberta Canada they make us weld all the 304,308, 316, 347 in position with stick it’s brutal , we’re always trying to argue with the companies they need to go with tig all the way when it comes to stainless , guys will be jammed up in some brutal spots for days on some big thick schedule 160 joints welding that garbage stick
@@kurtissmith4555 aaahhh, good God. I find it real wet and real tricky on the overhead parts.hot start, arc force amps...everything has to be just perfect
@@kurtissmith4555 You think that's bad, I had a company force me to weld some 308L Sched 10S in position stick all the way out. Trying to put a root in with stick, especially in position, is absolute fucking hell. To make it even better, it was my first gig in the trade and every time anyone has mentioned welding pipe with stick since I've told them to find someone else lol.
Avesta makes really good welding rod (green coating ) ,way less spatter , we typically go 3/16 right off the hot pass ,never fail a ferrite test either . If you are getting porosity on your starts just ark the rod out for two or three seconds to heat the moisture out of the rod .
Not that great if he is going to have videos of him broadcasted on youtube of him stick welding stainless with absolutely no RPE or LEV, standing there welding and huffing on fumes👎👎 Should know better, and should at least mention, or better off demonstrate the hazards of the fumes that come off of this process. Welding carbon with lowHy rods is bad enough, this is 10x worse.
Good looking welding, good tips, I would have liked to have saw the root, and hot pass run also, but I can understand that is kinda a whole different situation. God bless you brother. Work safe.
Obviously a highly skilled dude, but are there any real situations where your going to set up like that? My welds dont look like this but im normally crawling around in shit or up a scaffold.
Used to weld with stainless rod a lot in 1980s it was some of the smoother operating rod I used. Make nice pretty little golden welds. Watch your eyes, the slag cools and ' pops' right off. ( I do mean ' pop ' ) Remember welding something heavy with stainless rod that ended up in my yard for years in the dirt. The steel was all corroded and rusty but the weld was still pretty and shiny.
I'm just a homeowner who does a little welding repairs around the house. I've always found stainless rods where so much easier to get a nice weld with. Would go from not even being able to strike a arc with carbon steel to laying a nice bead with the stainless.
70xx the 60xx setting has more dig (amperage injection when voltage gets low due to short arc. This reduces chances of snubbing out prone to 60** rods doing roots)
Might seem like a dumb question but I'm a newbie and trying to learn, what kind of "cross-contamination" is he talking about with the grinder? Does this actually matter?
He means contamination of regular carbon steel, or worse rusted carbon steel. See stainless, on its own is basically rust proof due to the nickel and chrome in it, however you CAN "seed" rust in stainless if it gets scratched by a piece of steel that already has rust on it. That's why your supposed to use only stainless wire brushes and fresh new grinding discs etc only used for stainless. If you get into stainless get a seperate kit with all your stainless only gear and keep it clean and away from regular welding stuff. That can include a new and seperate angle grinder that you will not use on regular stuff etc. Many people also keep a seperate kit for aluminum only etc.
should have run the grinder through on your second pas to open it up so there were no slag inclusions, and a quicker smaller first pass to have a nicer valley for the second pass. nice welding though
Nice welds! Personally I don't have the patience to fill a schd 80 joint with 1/8th. I'd definitely be reaching for 5/32 minimum or even 3/16ths. Have it done in 2 passes with alot less stop starts.
Can I use this rod to weld stainless steel exhaust pipes together? I only have a shitty home buzz box and experience with 6013 rods, any information would be appreciated
Only up side to stainless stick is the money saved on not using argon . But the money saved will vary depending on if the welders are proficient at stainless stick welding.
@@halledwardb not sure, but it's an easy google search (welding positioner.) I have one for smaller stuff, it's a dividing head for a mill with an adapted motor on a potentiometer for speed control. It probably cost 400 bucks total. It'll do 5 maybe 6in pipe, but anything bigger than and you need a BIG positioner that'll run in the thousands of dollars.
I love using 316 L stick on everything I farm weld. Silicon bronze is another favorite. Got lucky and scored on out of date rod from a nuc plant contractor. I was more concerned watching the fumes in his helmet and blocking his view. I always attempt to engineer a path for the fumes away from my breathing area. Please chime in with your experiences.
Of 15 years in this industry as a combo hand ive never seen a stainless stick roll out. My 14 year old could do that lol. Lets see that uphill 6g with insulation raining down your neck while 10 convicts are river dancing on a scaffold above you 😂
I thought the pipe was without the timer roller, how about 6G or 5G position pipe permanently tack so we can learn for how to run the elektrode from bottom to top of the pipe and which current suitable but not for down hand only👍
Anyone with a bit of job knowledge knows that. These muppets trying to look like the big hard man, trying to act all cool and "dope", obviously dont. Theyll be the ones giving it the hard man act, sat in a hospital waiting room waiting for an outpatients appointment with an oncologist for their lung cancer, after an appointment with a pulmonary specialist for their emphysema and chronic bronchitis
Ciao,,volevo fare una critica, una scuola di saldatura grande e famosa come la vostra non ha un posizionatore elettrico per far girare i tubi😕😕,poi di solito si usa un elettrodo scorrevole cioè un 308 L17
