Today we will touch base on some key points to look out for when stick welding with 309 rods! It can get messy and a little difficult when you are first starting of so here is a little help.
I got thrown into stainless 3g at a new job I struggled hard in the morning and watched your video at break time I got commendable in the next few hours and weld crew example in days. Keep burning bro, you are a great welder and helped me personally. Love the message and what you do. IWL8
You are obviously an excellent welder. You are also an excellent instructor. Good work. Keep it up. (I’ve been welding and instructing for 55yrs so I recognize excellence when I see it.)
Thanks for the info on starts. It's a little bit like how I strike a 7018 ver. Guess I was doing the 309 wrong, looking forward to trying this technique. For anybody that's practicing I had a few old timers tell me whip from side to side and count; one two three. Lays in super tight! (If you need a mental guide to go by.)
Eldinf stainless with these rods is a completely different cat to skin than welding on just carbon. It's a lot wetter, and a lot hotter. Great video and great information
What kind of problems were u getting? Because I keep getting slag right down the middle ever 5th rod or so. I think I was weaving to wide but I still get the slag every once in a while
This man's tuitional skillls are exceptional, listen very carefully and you'll become a top-flight welder. I noted that this rod runs very similar to flux-core wire. Key point of welding is ; look after the sides and the centre takes care of itself.' In 99% of all instances😉
Taking a test next week on stainless. I've NEVER welded stainless, your vids helped me pass my last jobs test. I'm super nervous about it since I never did stainless and dont know the heat. All I know is I'm using 3/32 and 1/8 rods. Any advice is desperately needed. Test is on Tues of next week.
Thanks for the tips. I'm in a welding class for my job and having a damn hard time with this 309 stuff. Been at it hard for 3 days and I just can't get it to look decent
Those rods are expensive. Practice costs $$$, but once you get the hang of it, you will make some beautiful welds. I like this rod. It goes on smooth, sounds good and doesn't spit dingleberries. The end product looks like jewellery.
This is the most common rod for me to be welding with. I'm an inside Bricklayer/Refractory mason. 16 years of it. I cannot overstate how sick of it I am. Over head is actually what I prefer.
I always thought I had done something really wrong and I was being punished when I had to run 309 vertical. You did a fine job, looked as good as any I've seen and better than I've done myself. By the way, what did you do wrong? Good video!
i gotta run this on a pipe test this week. not looking forward to it. never ran it and the pipe i gotta weld is massive. atleast i know it can be welded well. thanks for the vid
Nice one Hjalmar. I use 312l-16 rods a fair bit and those are a b*tch to run in position just like 309. Flat and horizontal no problem, but vertical up and overhead if you don't do it right you get a lot of slag incusions.
I use 309 mig wire at my job now and nothing pisses me off more lol I can only imagine how annoying this is, but I kind of want to try it bc the end result looks😍😍
That rod is the insecure friend whos actually really beautiful... You just have to knock it up side the head a so you can get it to see the beauty thats underneath it all
I have a carbon tube with some kind of coarse textured coating and a stainless flange so I hope this works out. I’ve tried some practice pieces, but now it’s go time. I’m goin in; wish me luck.
Hey man that was cool! I'd like to ask you, when you're welding stainless pipe with stick, do you have to passivate the weld after? I've only used TIG on stainless and passivation afterwards was a big deal. Thanks!
I have a question hope you answer it ❤️ If im going to make a groove weld in stainless steel plates. ,.,do I need to put a root face on it?just a little bit curious, Because I experienced to weld aluminum plates ..it doesn't need. - I love to watch your tutorials looking forward on it 🔥👩🏭 You inspired me ..a lot 🤦
The rod must get red hot like that due to the higher resistance/lower electrical conductivity of the rod itself? Great video, thanks a lot for making it.

how is the root penetration ? looks like its not too deep fusion in the root. i dont really know im just curious. looks like it barely fused but probably good enought
