Stair Building Timelapse + New Favorite Tool #14 

I definitely need a good stair tutorial. I can build a lot with wood but stairs give me some trouble for some reason

One of the tips and old school carpenter told me and I’ll never forget. Always slightly point your nails down when nailing risers and point nails back on treads so the nail penetrates against the grain. It looks like you already do that but just wanted to point it out. Much respect, bang on!

Nice work fellas. One thing I've noticed in several videos if the lack of saw horses on your jobsites. Cutting stringers on the ground is a poor practice in several ways. HARD on the back, slower, more difficult to be nuts on accurate, and is way more dangerous than using a proper cutting station. Same can be said of not using or using an improvised stand for your table saw. In no way is this criticism without a solution. On a rain day, make a bunch of stackable horses out of scrap wood. I have a design tweeked over the years that works very well, if you're interested. I am a LiUNA Laborer. I spend a great deal of my work day making the work flow for the Carpenters safer, easier, cleaner, and more efficient. Job sites are like a chess game, thinking several moves ahead sure make things go more smoothly. It sure feels good to see the look on a Carpenter's face when they go to their next step in a job and find all of the materials they need decked on horses, lights in place if needed, cords/hoses ran, garbage can in place, and a couple of bottles of water waiting for them. I have the portable corded version of that dewalt table saw and I love it. Very similar to what you have and very smooth.

Maybe next time you have to build stairs you can show those that don’t know how to lay out a stringer how to find your rise and run for your treads and risers the adjustments that you need to make to a stringer in order for it to be comfortable and have all your steps be even also pass inspection and how to put a stair case together

Hope you put something under the top set of stringers at the bottom. The load transfers to the bottom of the stringer.

Why aren't the treads and landings screwed? Isn't there a worry for squeaking later? Perhaps the screws get added later?

It amazes me how you guys are always working as a team, especially building walls were you have 4 or more people building one wall. Every crew I’ve been on makes you do everything solo dolo. I’ve learned how to do things by myself that should probably take two guys. Not knocking it just saying it’s weird for me lol

It's interesting that you nail your floor sheeting. Up here we use screws (less squeak over time). Great work though

Is the finish on the stairs carpet? For hardwood treads and risers, we would typically install temporary treads. The downside to temporary treads is the stringers tend to shrink and curl on you, leaving what use to be a 90 degree cut and you end up with something closer to 92 degrees.

Hey Matt when you use that table saw I was always thought to stand in front of it and push the side closest to the fence through because that’s what helps form pinching the blade? Is there a reason why you did it the way you did? Also idk if you have them but we have a framing square that we put these little nuts that butt up to the pice of wood and already have the rise and run measured out, and we just keep it there to always make it easier on ourselves 😆 as always bang on I listen to the same radio as you guys, I don’t mean to brag but what can I wait great minds think alike 😂

Nice to see someone using a table saw to rip treads and riser and not nailing down a 6x2 or a strip of ply to cut it then take it apart and move it ect. At least use a plunge/track/ rail saw.

Having this beams make it so much easier I hate putting 2 2x8 together cause they are never the same size in width. Even for the post.

Measurements had to be precise when yall put the wall up on the 2nd floor. We usually frame and go in case someone is off.. respect!

I'm tearing out and reframing a few staircases in my 1906 house over the next few weeks. I can see the appeal of putting Advantech treads on top of the stringers to have something to walk on for the rest of the construction process (instead of the finished treads), but what is the purpose of cutting out unfinished risers as well?

How thick is your floor sheathing(the advantech)?

That table saw works really well with the thin blade it comes with. Once you put a fat Diablo in there it looses power and battery life. Still works well just not as.
