We're getting started on a 3,000SF farmhouse duplex, on a lot that is going to make the building process much more difficult. With overhead powerlines, a foundation that sits a whopping 12" away from a block wall, we've got our work cut out for us.

Bracing timber walls with plywood is old technology, shock absorber braces are better. Car or truck shock absorbers can be attached to one end of a 45 degree diagonal brace, to absorb earthquake energy.

If anybody comes here to learn anything as a builder or DIYer or whatever else. I'm telling you right now what Matt talks about beginning @8:38 is why this team is 100%, solid fking gold. It would be good enough reason to use this crew knowing how good of framers they are. But the fact that they also can (and are willing to) do the footings/foundation as well... This allows them to do EXACTLY what he talks about where I said. I'm telling you... This video clip should be hosted in the JLC. Have I already mentioned that this ability is solid fking gold to have on your list of subs if you are a GC? Well ok... I said it twice. And I ain't kidding.

Nice to see a "old fashioned" slab on grade there, with stem walls. LOL. Out here in Phoenix, damn near every new house built over the last 15-20 years is a post tension slab... much cheaper for builders to go with, but makes future reno a pain when moving pipes or running in floor electric. Have to get an xray out to map the tension wires and when most are like 12" on center in north-south/east-west, it's really impossible to do anything without major changes to the foundation.

Tips for forming Your guide for inside forms can be better, nail a stake on top that extends at least the thickness of the outside form plus another inch or so. Drive a nail in at the thickness of the outside. Now it hangs from the outside form. When nailing the inside use a similar system so your blows are backed up by the outside form and you dont need to lug around a sluggo. If working on a taller stem wall and especially if multiple bars or verts are required, build the inside form bottom up, set the first board a safe distance below level from outside form, now you can go up tieing bar and adding spreaders as you go. These are all small tips that add up to make work easier and more productive.

Having to deal with a tight working area, inside the lot and outside the lot, must be very stressful, and if you add to the mix neighboring homeowners who may resent the goings-on with the new constructions makes me wonder how you're managing that?

Matt, in the stem wall episode #2 @17.19 into the video I noticed you are nailing the board from the side concrete will be. I am finding that I may have to do the same as I build my stem wall. Did you run into any problems when removing the stem wall? How did you tackle removing the lumber's 90 degree angle with the nail attached on the concrete side? Hope my question is not too confusing. I had a difficult time wording the question. Thanks
