I remember playing this game for the first time and no joke, thought it was a horror game. This game was absolutely beautiful! Shame they don't make games like thus anymore
I felt the same as you, I was ten or 11 years old when the game passed me and some things shocked me but I liked it and when the movie and the Nazis came out it seemed strange to me but I ended up understanding it, great game
Nah what made this game horror and really scary was the first ever zombies map ever in history of call of duty was nacht def untoten this intro basic but very scary could never play that solo in the daylight neverming fucking night and I was 9 or 10 when around this time 12 years playing call of duty and proud of it coming up to 13... brings me back to simple times getting home for primary school Friday night getting on the game with the boys on co op campaign or multiplayer it’s actually making me right now rethink my whole past and now my future as I’m now realising I’m 20 inApril. Don’t know if anyone else agrees if I had unlimited wishes I’d ask for only one wish and to re-experience my whole gaming childhood the moment I played games up to the age of 9 waking up one day on Christmas to getting this game and the adrenaline and excitement build up to downloading it I actually wanna cry so bad how much good times are coming back ;(
@@scousegam3r565 nah I feel it dude, when I was younger I could not play the zombies. One of my older friends wanted to play and then tried to turn the lights off. I don’t think I have ever left my room faster.
Darkest Call of Duty ever, and damn how great it was, for once we had an accurate depiction of the horrors of war. In this game's campaigns, there were no heroes. Just a bloodbath and cruelty on all sides. Well done, Treyarch, well done.
I am from Russia, I have lived all my life in the city of Volgograd (Stalingrad). The mission from this game is dedicated to my city. In our city there are many traces of this brutal war. The game very well conveys the atmosphere of the war in Stalingrad.
A lot of people don't understand how insanely deadly the eastern front of the war was in WW2. You Russians lost more people in that one battle than the Americans did throughout the entire war. IT WAS A BLOODBATH! Much love my friend from America.
@@tonylovesducks2501 Hi, bro, it's freezing in Volgograd now, - 15. In fact, Volgograd is not as cold as it might seem. The average temperature in winter is -1,-2 degrees Celsius
The colours too, they captured the grim Stalingrad feel with this mission and pretty much all the other ones. The whole atmosphere and characters hit the ww2 vibe perfectly
@@MillionsofDollar100 obviously the colors were toned down so it can give a proprer scenario and context to how is actually going. Being grey, black and white are like the colors of hopeless. One thing that nobody notices is that colors speak for themselves, they trigger a very strange feeling. For an example, red represents nervous feeling and it is very much distracting. There is a reason why hospitals can't be painted over red, it wouldn't make feel any person comfortable and an distracted person could very likely have panic attacks and etc. Blue and green however are the colors of nature, which you can see, is many ones favorites
@@holder271 Because every game is flooded with over the top cinematic BS. They just throw out visuals and give little thought to gameplay, writing, and play style.
@Gangstabob716 exactly. Cod has been nothing but visuals since the franchise became popular with cod 4 and waw. Cod is an OUTDATED ps3 360 experience no matter how much they paint it up to look next gen.
This is the most well written mission in any first person shooter to date. This proves that video games are capable of having incredible narratives, and aren’t just full of mindless action.
@@thenotfreshprince they stole it from nothing, just because it is in Stalingrad and has sniper sequences doesn't mean they stole from enemy at the gates which is a bad movie if we go by historical accuracy
The first two Brothers in Arms games were much better. CoD, no matter how good the early games were, were nothing more than an interactive action movie
@@user-sc6bk7bl1m And who can blame him. He witnessed horrific stuff that no one - regardless of nationality - should ever see. Hope he was somewhat alright, after all.
Beating WaW on Veteran difficulty was one of the most difficult achievements I've ever completed in gaming. The enemies had unlimited grenades that all seemed to be guided by GPS honed directly to your position.
Facts im doing it this time with my brother Its still hard lol the Ambushes catch us off guard still. The Grenades were insane literally, and the closer you got to the enemy the more crazy the shoot outs were. I learned something new from it though Use smoke to Hide from MG gunner
This game alone give you an clear image of the horror of the war, both side, and an sharp reminder to the player, you’re not a hero, you’re just a survivor, and this mission alone will put you in the shoes of a Solider .
Repent to Jesus Christ “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5 NIV
1 of my favourite cod campaigns, need to get a console just to play this again and I watched enemy at the gates last night for the first time in about 7 years it made me want to play it even more
So privileged to have owned and played this game and I won't even lie...I still play it today. Why? Because it's a masterpiece. It's uncensored in all its glory and still remains as one of the greatest WWII games ever made. Each mission, music, scenery dialogue and level design truly encapsulates the sheer brutality, horror, fear and chaos that was WWII and was not censored to hide the facts as the games are today. It felt more like a horror game than an action game because that's what WWII was....a real life horror story. A wonderful game and after all these years, I still proudly own my copy. Do yourself a favor, and play this game. You'll remember it forever.
One of the best campaign missions I've ever played. The atmosphere, the introduction, the music. Truly terrifying, I cried a few times growing up playing this mission thinking of all the men and women who died during this conflict. Never forget.
В.О. ZOV.
This is when CoD was at it’s peak. The setting, the music, everything made this game feel so special. Truly the best experience of how world war the second looked like on the worst front you could imagine - east and pacific Shame they didn’t put anything from the western front. I can only imagine how d-day would look like in WaW…
I'm pretty sure it was intentional. During this era wwII games had been done to death and people had played the D-Day invasion dozens of times in multiple different games at this point. It's part of what makes this game stand out, it covers conflicts that you didn't see much in games of that era.
@@DarkROSkull013 They did D-Day in CoD 1 AND 2 so by this time it was pretty overdone. D-Day would be pretty interesting to see but imagine a battle of the bulge on this game. Actually ANY Western US front on this game, you'd be able to drive tanks and man anti tank placements.
I remember the look on my uncle's face when watching me play this mission, wondering if it had been a good idea giving this game to an 11 year old. Now im immersed in history and studying a bachelor's degree, this game set my future. Thanks uncle.
This game is so dark, I can't help but love it. I remember beating this game at like 2 am on a school night and then the zombies cut scene happened. I ran to my moms room because it scared me. Times were much simpler back then.
Call of Duty World at War 2008: “For days I have crept through shadows like a rat. This place once echoed with conversation of friends and lovers. No longer. Mark my words, comrade. @@osfama470 Скорее всего ты прав. В первой калде помню момент битвы за Сталинград, где на берегу говорят точно такую же реплику как из фильма "Солдат с винтовкой стреляет, солдат без винтовки следует за ним, когда солдат с винтовкой умирает, солдат без винтовки поднимает оружие и продолжает наступление". Дословно не помню, но примерно так было
This may be the single best opening cutscene/mission combo of all time. Transitioning from Reznovs speech describing the "brutality of their soilders" to seeing it play out in front of you is unlike anything cod had done before or has done since. Other than playing Nacht for the first time, seeing this fountain of death is the most memorable COD moment I've ever had.
Currently playing through this campaign again, plugged in my PS3 just to play it. Absolutely beautiful game, especially these sort of missions. Such an amazing game. Campaign, Multiplayer and the OG Zombies
The start of this campaing was honestly something way different to all the stuff you see in all the current Cods, the way it portrayed the brutality and darkness of those times is something that we have no chance or very low chances of seeing totally remastered or in a movie, hands down the best cod in existence
I’ll never forget in 2009 walking into Howies game shack & someone was playing this mission & I stood behind him watching him play for the whole 15, 9 year old me was flabbergasted & couldn’t believe what I was seeing, it felt so real. Like I was the one playing. Now when I explain this intro to people they think im talking about a movie, I wish I could go back & play these games at their peak again
This game aged so well I think. One of the best COD campaigns ever made, and one of the best multiplayers too. To think this one gave us the legendary zombies mode too as an after credits easter egg! What a phenomenal game! So many good memories!
Hands down the best Cod ever made. I feel for the new generation who didn’t get to play this when it was first released. Also love the influence from enemy at the gates for this scene.
This brings me back dudeeeeeee! The achievement for this game that gave me the hardest time was ending the mission by sniping the dude at the end with a pistol. Game was a masterpiece!
How we went from this to vanguard I’ll never know. Heck even the weapon mechanics were better back then. Imagine if the graphics were closer to mw 2019. Or bf1.
theres something just more special and enchanting about the outdated, old graphics that gives scenes like these a different feel compared to the overdone and dramatic graphics of today. it provides a different kind of charm, i think its best that this campaign stays like this
i would say forget about changing the graphics of WAW entirely, it's perfect even to this day. the atmosphere would be ruined had a new graphic engine kicked in.
Thank you so much for replaying the game! Today is exactly 80 years since the end of the Battle of Stalingrad. I myself am from Volgograd (former name was Stalingrad). That's just the wrong name. There was no 62nd Rifle Division in the Battle of Stalingrad, there was the 62nd Army under the command of Lieutenant General Chuikov. In memory of the exploits of this army, the central embankment of Volgograd is named, it is also the Embankment named after the 62nd Army.
I miss this game. I remember being a young teen playing the multiplayer for this game and playing so much that me and my friends would watch the leaderboards to see how high we got in them. I was top 100 in search and destroy.. miss those times!!
Still my favorite COD and my favorite mission in the series. WAW is an absolute masterpiece. From the campaign to the multiplayer, it was all so glorious.
I remember playing this campaign over and over and it is still to this day top tier. The beautiful story telling of the Americans storming the beaches, and the Russians fighting through the streets and alleyways. There was horrific moments like in the fountain surrounded by your dead comrades and that moment sticks cause you're forced to be there for a decent amount of time where there's no talking, no shooting, just you in puddles of blood and your dead friends. Not only was this game action packed but it really showed how disturbing war was in many different ways and lot of the time it was subtle.
Reznov is voiced by Gary Oldman, who won an Academy Award for Best Actor in his portrayal of Winston Churchill in 'The Darkest Hour'. Just let that settle in
Gary Oldman is fantastic as an actor, he’s just so versatile and always captures the character he plays. one of the best actors of the last 20 years for sure
Next time i stand at my grandfathers grave i will tell him about your regards butchering oodles and oodles of those russians, man with manga profile picture.
Best World War game ever hands down, a remastered of this game would be bought in a heartbeat, it wont happen but man can people only dream, one of the best Call of Duty games ever in my opinion
@@tobyelliott8282 No, that’s a false narrative and pandering to that audience does no real good. Those people that would complain wouldn’t buy the game or stop the sales in anyway.
@@jordanwebster1728 I agree, but they still wouldn't have the balls to use the same gore as WaW. There hasn't been a single gory cod since this game lol
The switch in tone is amazing, going from running around with a bazooka, flamethrower and a grenade launcher while the Japanese are in the trees, in the grass running at you with bayonets. Then you go to this, massacres, going into buildings to avoid German patrols that’ll burn you if they find you, a single shot can alert any patrol in the area.
"Dimitri we thought you were among the dead in the massacre at the square!" "He was. among them, but not one of them." His lines just always would hit different and I dont know why
They never give people what they truly want. Just try to force feed us dog shit and call it steak. Remake the original COD’s we grew up with and loved. Thank you for this! :)
Some may frown at this in todays world, but things were different when I grew up playing this franchise; I can remember being 10-12years old, playing through this campaign for the first time…as a child, I would act as one of the soldiers and converse back and forth with Reznov and other main characters to really immerse myself in these famous battles. This mission is especially one of my favs ever; because of the close resemblance to a film called “Enemy at the Gates.” It’s sad the players of today in my opinion will never truly get that “Hype/Immersion” feeling of today’s CODs, because when these games came out EVERYONE wanted to play.
Growing up my mum never let me play CoD games, but my dad did and this was one of his favourites and one he insisted I should play. I think understand why.
So many great fuckin memories playing this on my house's Windows XP desktop when I was a boy 🥲. I will never forget that hearing that haunting menu music for the first time all alone in the dark. This game made me have vast respect for those like my grandfather who fought in WW2. So much fun playing modded zombies even years after BO2 and other COD games were years past. I wish things could go back to the eay they were in 2009 😔.
This game got me through 8th grade(the single worst year of my school life). The multi-player was so intense and exhilarating plus missions with Reznov were so engaging and tactical.
This board was my favorite in the game, it made me feel like I was in the “Enemy At the Gates” movie for real. World at war such a fun game whether it was PVE or PVP. Certified classic.
The first song that plays when they are crawling in the fountain, oh man, I don’t think any cod can replicate the feeling of rawness and atmosphere that WaW brings
Such a shame no game will EVER be this grim again like how it used to be. People became soft and things like this will never be a thing ever again. It is only a burning memory, even the mission in MW2 when you were ghilid up and had to sneak through the woods and the tall grass as tanks and men pass you.
Two of the luckiest survivors of the classic COD goat series. I remember playing this back then, just like All Ghillied Up in COD4, and thinking, “Wow, i was almost killed by a huge barrage of enemies.” Petrenko and Reznov, especially Reznov, would play key to the victory in this game. All WW2 COD games, from back then, were the goat! So simplistic yet the most symbolic at showing the true cost of war.
