This F150 would die when coming off throttle. It also suffered from poor fuel economy and rough idle when it would idle. A few forum searches led me to the full throttle body replacement. A Ford mechanic quoted $379 for this activity (not a dealer, that would have been more). I did this for $71 including the tax and shipping. It works on these models

Struggled with these issues for 2 years, changed everything that can be changed then gave up trying to fix. By complete chance found some oil leaking from the valve head and had it replaced in the process found out the timing belt was old and stretched and the timing was off. Fixed that and now drives like magic.

Nice! Glad you found the issue. These old trucks can last a LONG time if you’re willing to put a little love into ‘em. One of my sisters has a 2006 F150 with 450K miles on it with the original engine and trans still. The one in this. I’d belonged to my other sister. She didn’t drive as much and only has a little over 130K now.

Thank you for your fantastic video post of the Ford F-150 your video post was from the beginning taking the throttle body off putting it on and test driving I watch some videos that vehicles with the same issue just like mine their videos where no help at all because they did not show no repair from the beginning or end not even a test drive after the repair once again thank you I'll just get another throttle body this one is for you champion 🏆

Thanks for your kind words! I am currently working on my other sister’s F-150 with a shudder issue but I think it may be a transmission issue because the truck has over 450,000 miles on it. @@kiltedtexan please do the video mine have over 300000 OD light comes on say transmission fault the orange light flash then go off then picks up normal speed so I will wait for the your video and once again thank you for your honesty and yes I come from a family of FORD'S

Was it rough when cold as well as warm? Mine starts rough idling at stops only when warm. No issues when cold or at speed.

It was more apt to die when it was warm. Idle wasnt great at any point but there did seem to be a tendency to be worse when it had some temperature in it.

You got lucky with your parts cannon. Hit the target on first shot. Was there any analytics that went along with this or just a good old boy guess?

There was a lot of messing with TPS, MAF, and other items. Lots of cleaning and other diagnosis as well as a number of queries on Google and F150 forums before identifying the TB as the culprit. This old girl was bad enough that my sister went out and got a new truck because this one was so bad. So yeah, the TB was the first shot out of the ‘parts cannon’ but not the first ‘expeditionary mission’. Have a great day!

Hey thanks for the video I have an 2005 F-150 with the 5.4 L 3 valve engine My question is do you have an aftermarket air intake? My air intake is completely different was just curious if there was that much of a difference between the O6 and the 05

This old girl is PAINFULLY stock. No aftermarket parts whatsoever. The airbox between the two years is radically different. The principle is the same though. The 05 5.4L does not have an IAC, it is also controlled by the trhottle body. I don't think the link I have in the description will fit yours though. This one: amzn.to/3Swo4cB shows to fit an 05 F150 5.4L but if you go to amazon, run it though their "confirmed fit" checker first before buying it.

Did you have any trouble codes (DTCs) during this particular issue such as P0172 (Fuel System Rich on Bank 1) or any misfire codes (P0300 to P0308)? My Dad is having the same stalling, hard cold starts, and rough idling/running issues on his 2005 Ford F-150 Supercab with the 4.6L Triton V8 Engine.

I'll be honest, its been so long ago I don't fully remember on this one. I know it would throw random codes that would pop a CEL and then go away on their own, or maybe after a shot of carb/throttle body cleaner down its gullet. I know it did not ever read a system rich code. I remember there was a code that tracked back to the fuel cap, one that was generic in nature, (P100 maybe) but I do remember that it did not show any misfire codes.

I have a 93 flareside you have any idea why it’s stuttering and does randomly.. especially when a/c is on? Timing issue??

If the stutter is worse under load (a/c running) could be anything from vacuum leak to weird emissions control responses. I had a 93 mustang GT that had a weird stutter until i replaced a fuel filter and an O2 sensor. When i did that she ran smooth again and my mileage went from 19 to 24 mpg. Im assuming it is a 5.0 in the Flareside. Unfortunately I think to properly diagnose would require a bit more info.

Still sounds like an IAC (Idle Air Control) issue. If it is not something in the throttle body, it may be a PCM issue. Right now I'm battling an issue on my other Sister's truck where after it is warm it shudders under load and under 2K RPM. I am probably going to try to SWAP out PCM's and see if it has an effect. Since I have 2 2006 F150s I'm hoping I can change out the PCM and the lock cylinder (Since the keys have a transponder in them) to test and then without having a PCM reprogrammed.

My 2006 F150 5.4L keeps dying when idle. It also makes a “clacking” noise. Any idea what it could be?

Hard to say without further diagnosis. The dying certainly could be the IAC feature in the throttle body but the addition of the clacking could be timing chain, loose rocker, detonation, exhaust leak, valves, etc. sorry I don’t have any further ideas for you.

Outstanding. Glad you got it worked out. Variable timing is a wonder for efficiency but sure introduces a lot of failure points into the system.

I had been through the fuel filter as part of regular maintenance. It is inexpensive and fairly easy to replace so I would say if it hasn’t had a fuel filter in a while go ahead and replace it. As far as the sensor, the only one that I would be concerned with really would be the oxygen sensor. Normally, when those go bad, though, it throws a check engine light. None of the lights on the dash had anything to do with the O2 sensor. That’s why I went straight to the throttlebody.

A blocked fuel filter will prevent the engine from producing good power

Possibly. It hadn’t run in about 2 months so it may have just been noise due to lack of oil through it for so long. The other times I’ve heard it cold start since then seems way quieter on startup. Either way, she belongs to my sister so I’m not as worried about it ;).

That does sound very similar to what this truck was doing. Sometimes just rolling down the road at 30 mph and letting off the throttle would cause the truck to die.

The throttle body I put back on was a new one. The old one was damaged or worn.

​@@kiltedtexan getting old...i need a good signal to noise ratio to hear right, so I try to concentrate on what YOU are saying that is the signal, and the background noise is mostly the music. I love to dance and enjoy music , but not during auto shop class ! 😊
